Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov calls for country's football chief to resign - CNN

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has called for the resignation of the president of the country's football association after England players were subjected to racist abuse during Monday's Euro 2020 qualifier. The game was twice temporarily halted in the first half after England debutant Tyrone Mings alerted officials to the abuse being directed at both himself and his teammates from various parts of the Levski Stadium in Sofia.
"It is unacceptable for Bulgaria, which is one of the most tolerant countries in the world, and people of different ethnicity and religions live in peace, to be associated with racism and xenophobia," said Borissov
"I urge Borislav Mihaylov to immediately resign as president of the Bulgarian Football Union."
As well as the monkey chanting, some Bulgarian fans made Nazi salutes during the game.

Are Eastern Europeans racist or was this an aberration?

Not confined to the east.

The uniforms have “respect” on the sleeve. This is across multiple leagues and borders.

Nope, but the commercialization of the larger leagues in Europe (English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and others) has helped stomp this kind of nonsense out in a major way. Eastern European leagues aren't there yet, so these type of expressions still continue. You'll have your isolated incidents here and there, but not nearly as often as used to be the case.

What is odd is that this stuff pretty much only happens with English teams on a regular basis...

Are you implying that the English are provoking them somehow?

Yes and no. The outright racist nationalist Neo Nazi scum want exposure and English media certainly will give them that if they do this..

It is just that any racist football fans in 9 out of 10 cases almost involves English teams. Just as in cases of fan violence at international tournaments there is a high probability of English fans being involved.

When other countries with black players go to "these" places then rarely anything happens. Denmark has players of colour and our teams don't get targeted. France is almost half black (has been for decades) and nada.

Of course this in no way means racism does not exist. Just happened in Italy a few weeks ago. Certain teams like Zenith St. Petersburg and Beitar Jerusalem have very bad reputations of racist fans.

Now back to the question... In this particular case, then yes the English provoked it in my opinion.

5 days before the game their manager pissed off the hosts and it is not the first time that British media or/and the English FA/players have done this. I remember the same fear mongering **** in the lead up to the Russia World Cup by the English and nothing happened. In fact by most accounts it was the best games ever.

So in conclusion yes the English did provoke it in this case, but that of course does not justify the actions of these nationalist Neo Nazi scum. The best way to have countered the English provocation was to ignore it and let the English make a fool of themselves.

Pete it happens on the regular in games all the time. Bulgaria were in fact playing with a low capacity due to the fact they did the same vs Kosovo.

and again Bulgaria had already been punished in this qualification for racism.

I know, but let me ask you this.. name one black player on the Kosovo team? Maybe the issue was more political than racial?

And it does not happen in games all the time. There are thousands of games happening each week, and rarely is there reported anything. Thankfully these morons are still rare (like English hooligans). However UEFA and FIFA do label political stuff as "racism". Kosovo got Serbia punished for a nationalist political stunt.. and Kosovo was not punished. Remember the drone case?

So the Bulgarians were provoked into printing ultras sweatshirts, doing nazi salutes and monkey chants simply because of the English / Gareth Southgate???

Was ages ago before the World Cup, and as far as I remember nothing came out of it. Just as there was no racist behaviour at the 2018 WC, despite the English media going on and on about it in the lead up.

But again, there is racist pigs out there and they go to football stadiums. However as I pointed out, the Kosovo ban is more like political bs, than actual racism.

1. I have read that fans in many European countries yell unkind ethnic epithets at soccer players.

2. Of course, there is NO excuse for such boorish behavior.

3. Regardless of what one thinks of a gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, etc., it is not one's place to insult members of any group.

4. All the problems in this world are due to one reason: Human beings do not know how to keep their place.

It happens every week it’s just not always reported. I mean did you read the letter the Inter fans wrote to Lukaku?

They are nationalist morons.. anything can piss them off, and the comments by Southgate certainly did not help the situation. He insulted Bulgaria basically (at least in their eyes).. just saying.

It does not happen every week.. but it does happen more than it should. However in many cases it is "winding up" or banter. Funny how English fans calling your country a surrender monkey or your mother a whore is "banter", but when it is done to a black player then all of a sudden the **** hits the fan. And no, it does NOT excuse racism, but it has to be taken in context.

These Inter fans are morons, but they do not represent the Italian people nor all Inter fans, just as.. the Chealski fans busted in Paris for racism, do not represent all Englishmen and Chealski fans.

My point is, that in this case Southgate made some comments he should not have and that most likely triggered these ultra nationalist pigs. Was a bad move that certainly did not help the situation. Now the Bulgarian FA should have done more to identify the racist morons and not allow them into the stadium, but then again they might have been a tad pissed off by being called racist by the English manager and press.

How do we fix this? Not the way it is happening now.. the rules are not applied equally and abused politically as we have seen with Kosovo and other situations.

Nope because what he said was a direct provocation. A manager should stay away from political fights like that.

He was asked a question about what England would do if they started to receive racist abuse like other teams in the tournament had in that stadium. You're sounding surprisingly Trump like. " Good people on both sides"

Nope because what he said was a direct provocation. A manager should stay away from political fights like that.

“I can totally understand why the Bulgarian president feels as he does because we have purely been responding honestly to questions we’ve been asked,” Southgate said. “That will then be relayed and the way it’s pitched could appear provocative.

Think that explains it.

Frankly the football hools, be it on the level of national league, CL, Euro league or European championship (of nations) don't need any provocation. They'll however gladly use it if presented but if not, pursue their disgusting behaviour on some other equally invalid pretext.

While any form of sanctioning holds the problem of punishing not only the team in question but also the vast majority of its supporters that DO NOT engage in this behaviour) not even mentioning the fans of the sport overall), before being continuously forced to see any of this, I'd rather NOT see any football at all.

Now that is of course the worst case scenario but if the responsible bodies (which in this particular instance the UEFA clearly shows as not wanting to be) don't bloody well get their finger out, it'll come even more often than we get to see it.

As such the referee suspending the game twice was a good move of his, but if that isn't supplemented with a set of rules that allow him to scrap it altogether while the offending side is declared the loser, what's the point?

On a different note, allowing the Turkish national team to accompany the playing of their anthem with a military salute as a clear message of "f... you Europe", is so reminiscent of Munich 1936 that one would have thought it would meet with much swifter retribution than we currently see. Because here actually the players were doing the provocation.

Since some of the games of 2020 will take place in cities outside of Turkey (thankfully) that boast both a large Turkish and a Kurdish population, recent clashes between both groups alone in Germany (not to mention other countries) is the last thing we'll want to see repeated in any stadium. Or, for that matter, outside of them.

I blame it on Oceania and the racists that live there.

Funny you dont even know where it is, which says a lot.

Ukraine is full of neo-Nazis and I hope Russia steamrolls them. :2wave:
