Boy Scouts to admit girls into programs - 40 years to late for me

The Boy Scouts of America will now allow girls to join the organization, the group announced Wednesday.

The organization’s board of directors unanimously voted to let girls into the Cub Scout program and create a program for older girls to allow them to become Eagle Scouts, the highest rank of scout, the group said in a release.

Girls will be allow to join the Cub Scouts in 2018 and the program for Eagle Scouts is projected to begin in 2019, according to the release. The troops will remain single-gender. The announcement was made on Oct. 11, the International Day of the Girl.

“The values of Scouting – trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, brave and reverent, for example – are important for both young men and women,” Michael Surbaugh, the Boy Scouts’ chief scout executive said in a release.

My girls were in Girl Scouts and hated it. They never did cool stuff like camping. They were always jealous because Boy Scouts got to do way cooler stuff than they did.

the girl scouts have taken a huge hit lately.
the person in charges only concern was money.

it was just fundraiser after fundraiser and while the local girl troop would go camping and other things
it just got to much.

My wife hated all the running around.
then my daughter wouldn't get credit for the stuff she sold at the booths.

reminded me of that move The Boss. that would be a better deal for the girls than anything.
nope the organization sucked all the money up.

All they ever did was sit around in a circle and make ****. That's it. They drew pictures, made badges, and stuff like that. It was like Troop Beverly Hills, without the money. One time, I remember they went camping and it wasn't real camping. It was in a big long room. They slept on sleeping bags on the floor. The girls hated it.

I thought they already did that? Adventure Scouts is co-ed. I think they usually organized activities between of Girl and Boy Scout troops, but it's a co-ed Scouts.

Have to say I'm not entirely getting it. Like, ok, but I thought we already had this? I see value in both single-gender and co-ed Scouts, but between Girl/Boy Scouts and Adventure Scouts, that's really all the bases covered to me.

Maybe you got lucky. My girls were in Scouts 3 different times (in 3 different states) and they never did anything.

Sounds like my scout experience. We did go to a camp one year but it was only overnight and it was like one of those summer camp places where everything is already equipped and you didn't have to do anything. The other year was like your girls, we rented a room at a community center and brought sleeping bags. The big thing I remember was one of the girls smuggled in a VHS of Pretty Woman and all the girls waited until the chaperones fell asleep and watched it and felt like little rebels.

They don't want to merge. BSA is horning into Girl Scouts' territory, and the Girl Scouts want them to stick to boys.

I don't know how much the program has changed but when I was in girl scouts at the meetings we mostly sat around and sang songs. Singing down by the banks of the hanky panky a thousand times didn't teach me anything about being a woman.

Girl Scouts is paced and oriented for girls. Boy Scouts is paced and oriented for boys. It's that simple. If you had a lazy troop leader, I don't know what to tell you.

Because our views on gender have changed so much that the way we do scouts now does not make sense. Plus scouting has been dying a slow death anyways, they need to get relevant.
