2020 presidential candidate Bill Weld laid out his strategy Wednesday to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, asserting that he's running to "win" and not to "weaken" the President.

"I'm not sure how serious Mr. Trump is about governing, honestly. He has a one-word environmental policy: 'hoax.' A one-word immigration policy: 'wall.' I think sometimes his lack of experience in preparation for the office shows," Weld told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day."
The former Republican governor of Massachusetts said he'll be focused initially on the New England region, "with particular emphasis on New Hampshire."

Yup, Weld is a long shot, due to Republican tribalism, but he is the only real Conservative Republican running in 2020.

Weld is not a "long shot". He's a "no shot".

Bill Weld should have been the Libertarian Presidential candidate instead of Gary Johnson in 2016. I voted for the pair but realized that Weld was the better of that team.

Like I said, Republican tribalism, and this guy is the poster boy.

He cannot forsee his messiah is going down. The only question is, is it before or after the primaries.

I would say Weld is more in line with the old Rockefeller Republicans, the northeastern liberal Republican wing of long ago yore. I think you have a better chance of winning the power ball and mega millions lottery in the same week or getting struck by lightening three times in a row than Weld has in besting Trump for the GOP nomination.

Weld is an adult though, but the GOP will easily stick with the temper tantrum thrower, name calling, thin skinned egotistical opportunist that acts like a five year old kid whose parents failed to teach him any manners. I was really surprised that the GOP would nominate an eight time party switcher who has no political ideology outside of being for himself and only himself.

Such is life.

Weld isn't a liberal Republican at all. He is a hard core fiscal Conservative. Cut taxes in Massachusetts 15 times, and balanced the budget at the same time.... Almost unheard of, but when you are not spending money like a drunken sailor, you can cut taxes.

I mean, other than the fact that Bill Weld is not, by any stretch of the imagination, any kind of libertarian. He's only a "moderate" Republican in the sense that he's adopted some of the Democrats' authoritarian policies.

Bill Weld is almost tolerable. At least between Gary Johnson and Bill Weld running in the 2016 election as Libertarians, he at least knew where and what Aleppo was. Gary Johnson; "Aleppo? What's Aleppo?"

Gary Johnson also erased deficits in his state. Deficits to surpluses.

I don't get the long game here. Let's say he wins the Republican primary and becomes the Republican nominee. Does he think Trump will just decide not to run for the good of the party? Of course not. Trump would run as an independent. Trump wouldn't win but the new Republican nominee would have no chance of winning either due to the split vote. Yeah, independent candidates don't typically affect the numbers too much, but I doubt that would be the case when the independent candidate is the sitting POTUS.

All it would do is hand the presidency to the Dems.

I'm voting for him in the NH primary as I'm still a registered Republican. I wish he had been on the top of the 2016 ticket with Johnson (I voted for them). I have mad respect for Bill Weld. I can't wait to start going to his NH events. He's already been here at least twice but I wasn't able to go either time.

It wasn't their choice really; Trump made the other GOP candidates look like establishment stooges and none of them could switch gears in their campaign to really counter the frustration Trump tapped into. I'm pretty sure the GOP would be glad to be rid of him.

You may have something there. I know until Trump cinched the nomination, he was doing so with approximately 35% of the total vote. When you have 18 or so candidates, 35% is enough to win primary after primary. He ended up with 40% of the total GOP votes cast. Not being able to decide on a single candidate to oppose Trump also helped him out. Then how lucky can one get, he drew Hillary Clinton for the general. Someone as disliked as he was by America as a whole. Hillary did about everything wrong a candidate can do to go along with her laziness on the campaign trail.

Still, Trump will be the GOP nominee unless some major unforeseen event upsets the apple cart. We'll see what happens. With the right candidate, 2018 could be just the tip of the iceberg on how America votes in 2020. The Democrats could still blow it with the wrong nominee as they did in 2016 though.

I'm always reminded of the approval rating poll for both Clinton and Trump which found both of them in the mid-30 range. That GOP field was pretty poor as well; I actually agreed with Trump on his "low energy" comment about Jeb "clap now please" Bush and felt it applied to the others as well. Had the GOP fielded a more passionate candidate closer to its own values I think that candidate would have won the nomination.

Yeah, the GOP's made its deal with the devil and now they're stuck with Trump. Where this is problematic is if that type of candidate (belligerent and crass) becomes the expectation.

Weld is a fiscal Conservative, a label not heard much in the age of Trump. What happen to the Rockerfeller Republican? Oh ya, the Evangelicals took over the GOP and Rockerfeller Republicans became Libertarians. No room in that small tent for a fiscal Conservative with liberal social views, its a shame.

In a nutshell the party went for flash not substance. If the party had gone for Kasich I may well have voted for the man. It is a shame Kasich views on medical marijuana are prehistoric

this is a cult. Weld has no chance.

Governor Weld should be ashamed of himself.

He should show more respect to His Excellency, the President of the United States of America.

At this time when the Democratic sharks are circling their prey, the governor should not join the feeding frenzy.

His Excellency deserves the support and loyalty of those people who do not want a Democrat in the White House.

Unity among Republicans + fair-minded Independents & fair-minded Democrats is mandatory.

Your use of "His Excellency" says everything I need to know about you and your cult. The last "Excellency" was King George, and we got rid of him. We will rid ourselves of this dictator too.

Not being a sadistic psycho, he has no chance of winning the Republican nomination for the presidency.

I think the decisive point was the New Hampshire GOP primary when Christie tore into Rubio instead of going after the front runner. For me, that made Trump's nomination inevitable. I don't think being belligerent and crass are ideal traits. I do thing one being charismatic would over ride those traits in a heart beat. Reagan, Bill Clinton, Obama come to mind. None of them were belligerent nor crass. But all three could connect to the American people as a whole. Trump has his base and little other support. Hillary although not crass and belligerent totally lacked charisma and came across in my opinion as aloof and elitist. She had the charisma of a wet mop. Like she was next in line for the presidency and expected it to be handed to her on a silver platter. If she got off her lazy butt and would have campaigned and came up with a half decent campaign strategy, she'd be president today.
