Before Kaepernick, there was Craig Hodges

“Robeson is often criticized for continuing to support the Soviet Union after he became aware (according to his son Paul Robeson, Jr.) of state sponsored intimidation and murder of Jews.[28] Robeson would state continually in speeches and essays that having experienced firsthand for himself during the 1930s a climate in Russia that he perceived as free from racial prejudice, he saw no western country or superpower actively attempt any comparable commitment. Robeson thus refused any pressure to publicly censure the Soviet experiment.[28”

“ In 1952, Robeson was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize. In April 1953, shortly after Joseph Stalin's death he wrote a eulogy entitled To You Beloved Comrade,[31] in the New World Review, in which he praised Stalin's "deep humanity," "wise understanding," and dedication to peaceful co-existence with all peoples of the world calling him "wise and good." He also praised Stalin as a man that the world was fortunate to have for daily guidance: "Through his [Stalin's] deep humanity, by his wise understanding, he leaves us a rich and monumental heritage."[32]”

The truth about Stalin was not really made clear until the 80's. You are aware of that, correct?

False, actually. Stalin’s atrocities were known to many in the US even before Khrushchev flat out admitted Stalin had taken the country down the wrong path and committed atrocities in 1956.

The so called “secret speech” which was secret for about a minute.

Thirty thousand people left the CPUSA over it, so clearly it woke a lot of folks up.....just not Robeson.

Henry Ford. Do you see him reviled?

If it’s okay to fervently defend Stalin, then apparently doing so for Hitler is a-okay as well.

It’s almost like sending the message that Stalin apologism is acceptable is a bad idea.

Books were written and some news leaked out, sure. But, public perception on the true nature of the USSR was not clearly understood until well into the Bush years. When the wall came down, so too did the lies. A lot of people believed the lies. A lot.

Robeson also justified the mass murders carried out in the Great Purge and massively downplayed the existence of racism in the USSR.

From previous source:

“ During this time Robeson also commented about the recent execution after court-martial trial of people described by The Daily Worker as "counter-revolutionary terrorists":

From what I have already seen of the workings of the Soviet government, I can only say that anybody who lifts his hand against it ought to be shot![4]”

He also, despite knowing full well that there were pogroms and repression ongoing in the USSR, denied their existence.

“ Upon returning to the United States, he denied any persecution of Jews or other political prisoners, stating: "I met Jewish people all over the place... I heard no word about it."[17]”

There’s “being taken in by Stalin’s lies” and then there’s going above and beyond to defend him. Robeson did the latter.

And again, the truth about Stalin was formally acknowledged as early as 1956 even by the USSR itself.

Have you ever watched the movie "White Nights"? The reality for many minorities visiting or even living in the USSR was a delusional existence propped up by their ministry of propaganda. The truth did not become clear until after their system collapsed. But, I ask you this. Why harp on the darkie who liked Stalin and not the whitey who kissed Hitler's ass?

Because nobody on this thread is holding up Henry Ford as some sort of exemplary figure, and because Robesom knew about the recession and yet still defended Stalin. Henry Ford was an anti Semitic prick, but as far as I know he didn’t learn about the Holocaust and then keep going around talking about what a great guy Hitler was.

No one even knows who this Robesom was. HF, OTOH, is pretty much a household name. So, your defense is weak.

“So what”? Stalin murdered millions upon millions of innocent people. Robeson knew about it and still defended him. That’s despicable.

You make a point that has nothing to do with the topic nor the fact of Robeson's, or anyone's, right to free speech. Do you think people that do as did Robeson be denied the right to free speech? Is that your position? Or, are you just venting?

Just because something is legal doesn’t make it right.

Would you give the same slack to somebody who unapologetically defended Adolf Hitler?

Just because something is right doesn't make it legal, either.

Yes, as long as it doesn't cause harm or violence or constitute hate speech which causes harm as well as incites violence, even though I may be in vehement opposition to what is said.

So should people who admire Adolf Hitler and deny the Holocaust be held up as exemplary figures?

Hitler wasn't an ally of the US in WW2. He was the enemy. Stalin was our friend until he wasn't.

Do you understand how that maybe led to a lag in reaction among many, especially those who already had very good reasons to distrust the US government--you know--like Black people who were without question treated as lesser citizens?

This isn't hard, Tiger.

No. Robeson was not exemplary to me nor 99.9% of Americans. He was, though, an example of someone who was discriminated against because he was black, regardless of his Communism, in the context of my OP and the topic. Now, answer my question, if you are honest and forthright. Or, just runaway. Then, we can get back on topic.

Apparently the only people who can criticize America are white people like the MAGAt Trumpers. They can say how ****ty everything is for privileged white guy, even to the point of storming a state capital while bearing assault rifles, without anyone on the Right batting an eye. But, when Rev Wright points out how ****ty everything in America is for people of color..."Quick! Bring out the rope."

I bring your post back only because we rarely hear of the guy who made it possible for MLBaseball players to have their big contracts, Curt Flood.
I do remember Koufax and Drysdale each holding out together for $105k apiece.

Your response fell through the cracks(which happens when you get numerous posts addressed to you every day).

If someone who is Asian cries about ”discrimination” while supporting Imperial Japan, does that magically justify their atrocious political views?

Stalin was murdering people throughout the 1930s at a rather large pace. Robeson knew at the time and still defended Stalin.

Just crying about how much you “distrust the government” is not an excuse.

Outkick is run by a racist hack.

You continue to avoid answering the question by responding with another question. Your just not an honest, forthright debater. See you on another thread.

Whitlock doesn’t run outkick. A racist hack does. The guy will probably hire Tucker Carlson’s fired top writer.

“Waah! The guy who knew about Stalin’s atrocities and still defended him is oh so persecuted! Waah!”
