Are elected officials intentionally driving our country into debt?
I say yes. If they actually were trying to keep our country from going into debt then they would cut spending left and right, not continue to spend like some rich kid spending his parents' money.
I would say that Obama,Reid and Pelosi are.
I think the one mistake people make about elected officials is that they seriously underestimate their intelligence.
The Republican mantra was "deficits don't matter," or would you rather not remember that? We need to install flushing equiptment in the District of Columbia and pull the plug. They're all turds.
Dems still qualify as "tax and spend", but Reps have earned the "charge and spend" label precisely because of the 'deficits don't matter' mindset. The Republican mantra was "deficits don't matter," or would you rather not remember that? I say yes because they all know what they are doing and what it is causing and they are not stopping doing it.......See The problem with Washington is that we have a bunch of big EGO's=YAHOOS.....and they want to continue having big EGOs=YAHOOS and a JOB so not only do they do what they want with OUR moneys they do what they do stating it is all for their base/voters when we know it is their own EGOs standing in the way of doing what is right....our debt reminds me of a bad case of needing a bankruptcy and since we cant claim a BR then lets just spend more and ignore the monster in the room...after all us YAHOOS are getting paid.
so I say lets stop paying them till they get their houses in order....maybe then they will find a compromise.....as I say this as if that will ever happen. In reality this is all about them and nothing to do with all of us.
Where have you been the last 4 years? Its true Republicans spend to but dems make them look like pikers.
I don't think so. A big part of keeping constituents happy by bringing the pork barrel projects back home. At the same time I think many politicians have done the math and see it all easily fundable if they tax super-high income earners at higher levels like big oil execs, etc.
IMHO what we need to do is give the POTUS the line item veto but allow then to be overturned by Congress but unlike other votes that require a 2/3 vote, just by the same number of votes the original bill the line item was attached to passed.
I'm also not opposed to figuring out some way to incentivize savings such as rewarding government department employees with bonuses for returning money to the treasury they didn't need. Of course, this could be exploited so it would need to be done in a way that protects tax-payers and citizens from abuse.
Well, they're certainly not doing it by accident.
If you're asking if they have an ulterior motive, I rather doubt it . . . at least not the rank and file in Washington. As to larger plots afoot? Your guess is as good as mine.
I'd like to believe all those conspiracy theories... and just how 1% of the world's population is controlling everything and everyone. But then, I need facts

Actually, I think the Cons are trying to dismantle the social safety by cutting taxes on their watch then expressing outrage at deficits on the Dem watch. Then they yell we have to cut spending, particularly on social programs, with distain for any suggestion that taxes should be raised or that defense should be cut. Unfortunately, their grand plan is working well.
Most I don't think are intentionally doing it, but are motivated by greed to get more and more money to do more and more things they have the power to do. If we have one person trying to use government money to fund as much as possible it would probably be alright.... but everyone... not a chance. Every single politician is motivated by greed. Greed occurs in all aspects when it comes to money, if there is money there is always greed... Greed can happen in things that are "good" and "bad"... even too many good things is bad, because in the end someone needs to pay for it.
