Approved permit!

I just thought it might be easier to handle for a newbie, plus I heard the ammo would be cheaper?

Not knocking your decision at all.

I traded 6 days hard work bailing hay for my first rifle back in Maine when I was 14 during my first year back in Maine. I was too dumb to realize at the time that if I had taken cash, I could have bought a brand new .22 rifle and still had money left over. Not bragging, but I must have sent 7000-8000 rounds down range with this little rifle and became a marksman with it. I earned my Navy marksmanship medal with the rifle on my first try, and on my 2nd try for pistol with with the Navy .45

It was a old mail order JC Higgins bolt action .22 made by Savage, and as it turned out, it was the perfect small rifle for me because of the trademark dropped stock that Savage was known for back in the day. I am pretty tall at 6'3" with 36" arms, and the dropped stock made it fit like a glove.

My uncle was ok with it because he knew that if I wasn't on the streets that I wasn't in trouble. He was very supportive considering my background. He gave me a Winchester 30-30 that year just before deer season.

I saw below where someone recommended(longview in fact) a gun range and trying out different types. People I know I recommend 9mm but that's me though.

I was going to recommend the same exact thing. My wife just got her pistol permit this year and the very first one she shot was a Ruger SR9C and she handled it extremely well for a compact gun. If OP is looking for less recoil, a full size 9mm would be a great starting point.

Holbritter: I see you are in NY. How long did the process take? In Saratoga County it took her about 6 months from start to finish. It used to be much quicker, but it definitely seems like there has been a mad rush around here to get licensed. I have been waiting nearly 2 years to get into the range right down the street from me!

I'm in Rensselaer. Waiting for the appointment to get printed and hand in the paperwork seemed to take forever. It took 7 weeks for someone to set the appointment. Then however long to get your references in (took me a week) I had everything in by September 6th. I just got the call today to set up to go pick it up. I was expecting it to take much longer from what others were telling me, so I was surprised by the call.

Did hers come with restrictions? I don't think I'm getting a full conceal carry yet. From what I understand I have to go for advanced training then go before a judge for an 'interview'. I am hearing it's hard to get.

In Virginia, They waive the required courses for concealed carry for military veterans.

I love this state.

Same thing goes with the boating safety courses if you were prior Coast Guard or Navy.

Sweet! No such thing here as far as I know. And with the Safe Act, we have to re-certify every 5 years.

Being that it is NY, both of ours are restricted to target and hunting. The restriction is issued by the judge and does not have any effect on the legality of the permit because it will still be a concealed carry permit, but I still wouldn't risk carrying outside of those restrictions in fear of losing it.

In Saratoga county, we have a CCW class that we can take and then apply to the judge to have the restrictions removed. Rensselaer is a good county as well and you should be able to get it unrestricted eventually. The issue here is the waiting list for the CCW class and to be fair I actually don't think it's a bad thing to have to show proficiency in order to pass. They just need to offer more classes.

I have several friends in Albany and they have been waiting over a year to hear back from the judge!

Congrats, be safe, and have fun!

That's what I wondered. A permit to own a pistol or a permit to carry concealed. I know that NY is different.

As far as I am aware, any place not named NYC issues concealed carry permits with some type of restriction. Usually it's hunting and target, but it is only a judge issued restriction and has no bearing on NYS law to legally carry a firearm. If you were ever caught carrying while not on the way to the range or hunting they could inform the judge and your permit could be pulled. Most counties in NY are pro-gun and have ways to remove the restrictions. Actually, after the Unsafe act was passed many sheriffs from around the state said they would not enforce it.

Part of the fun living in NY I guess.

Yea! I go to pick up my pistol permit next week. What I need now is some suggestions for my first pistol.
I want to start with a .22 because it was recommended for a first timer.
I'll be using to practice and become proficient before moving on to a larger caliber.
Since it won't be my 'forever' gun, I don't want to spend a fortune.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Good for you. The first one I fired was single action revolver. You'll have a great time; just take your time and read a lot about what you have.

What did you get by the way?

I didn't yet. I don't pick up my permit until next week. Then I'll go shopping! :) Taking all the suggestion in and thinking about it.

You guys need to move to AZ. No permits required, period.

I grew up in Schenectady and have a couple of cousins in Scotia. When one of them came out to visit I took him to the range and he was amazed that I could simply hand him anything I had to shoot.

I'd be amazed as well! That's the plan when I retire. Arizona or New Mexico. Have a few more years to go!

Having gone through the first pistol purchasing process in the last few years, the best advice is to try a bunch of different ones to see which one you like the best.

I chose a Glock 17, which is the medium sized one in 9mm. Not too much kick, and a reliable firearm. 9mm rounds isn't all that much more expensive than .22 rounds, plus, it's a center fire, which means you can reload the brass casings, if you are so inclined. Not sure if you can do the same with rim fire rounds.

Good evening jet! Have you done your civic duty yet and handed in that ole M1 Carbine yet? Have you a Firearm Safety Certificate for said carbine? Just asking out of concern. Call me your private PSA.

Yeah, I'd go with a single action revolver for my first one. They're old school, very simple and easy to operate. I think you'll have more fun with one.

I like the area around Ballston Spa.

It's a beautiful part of the country. The whole Hudson Valley is gorgeous as is pretty much all of upstate. If it wasn't for winter and Democrats I'd gladly move back.

Well, mosquitoes too. I don't miss those critters in the least.

Come to think of it, raking leaves and mowing grass isn't that great either.

OK, let me just rephrase the whole thing, upstate NY is a great place to visit!:lamo

I would love to live in that area, but everything is illegal, so I wouldn't fit in...lol

there supposedly is a way to reload rimfire but I have never witnessed it. I reload 9mm, 40, 10mm, 45, 380, 38 Special, 38 short colt, and all four major shotgun shells. I can load 1000 380s with FMJ bullets for about 11 dollars a hundred. factory is at best 26 a hundred. I have loaded over a half million rounds in the last 32 years

Awesome! Just think. Enough power and supplies, it wouldn't matter if FedEx stops delivering.

You have lots of money?

if not skip the .22 and get a 9mm. if you don't want to skip it get a pellet gun, it kicks as a .22

9mm barely kicks.

They oversell the "work your way up", you could start with a .45 if you wanted to. ;)

I buy powder in 8 pound canisters. I load 9mm steel loads as light as "legal" which is a 125 grain bullet going slightly faster than 1000 to make a Power factor of about 127. I use TITEGROUP @3.7 grains with federal match small primers (for competition) or winchester for practice. I get about 1900 shells per pound of powder meaning about 15 thousand from a canister of powder. I hand prime my shells which takes extra time but I have no stoppages in the old 1050 Dillon I run. Once its full of primed brass, I can load close to 800 rounds an hour if I am running at average speed. I have done as many as 1150 in an hour
