Not the way Canada does it. That's not the same degree of Freedom that America fought the British to achieve. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights, are the greatest documents to ever exist, to preserve human freedom. No country can compare to the U.S.

36.29 million in Canada vs. 325.7 million in the USA...plus, the cultural views in Canada vs. USA, can not compare.
You don't have the gang problem that we have, which result in the majority of gun deaths.

However, many people cannot pass the hoops of the paperwork and cannot buy a gun. Potential gun purchases are rejected hundreds of times per day in the U.S.
It's only easy if you have a clean record and not mental. Even then, many sellers can spot a nutjob and refuse to sell.

You are quite right. It's pretty to get a gun. All it takes is a neighbor such as you describe, or a trip down to your nearest drug dealer. A fair number of the kids that shoot up a school stole their guns.

We have very weak laws and there is no state or country on earth that can take our guns laws and get low gun deaths by better enforcement. It can't be done
