Amazon says it will not build a headquarters in New York after mounting opposition

The workers would have had to live in Trump Apartments!
A deal breaker

Well since there is no such economic theory- it can mean anything anybody wants, so please spare the lectures on what I know or don't know.
But at least some liberals say its giving tax breaks to the rich so they'll create jobs. Wel isn't that exactly what NY did with Amazon and VA is most assuredly doing ?

Oh and by the way - I 'm assuming all the municipalities who offered tax breaks calculate that that those tax braks WOULD pay for themselves. Workers moving to the area...paying property and local taxes....becoming consumers...sales tax.....casuing more businesses to open to service the workers....more employees....more local taxes.....more sales tax .
Whether or not that actually pans out? Who knows - but that's the calculus.
The facts of life are conservatives

Politicians always hype the theoretical upside. They do it all the time with sports arenas which never pay for themselves. There is some number at which the Amazon deal doesn't make financial sense for the local municipality. I haven't seen anyone post the reason(s) for the dissent. Perhaps it's later in the thread.

Well that's certainly a shame. An Amazon office employing lots of people would have been great for the area.

But I didn't think Long Island City was AOC's district. I thought LIC was in the 12th district.

She LOUDLY declared it s VICTORY.

No, NY and Virginia were offering tax breaks in exchange for the creation of jobs. The jobs are real and tangible benefit from the tax breaks. Trickle down economics is giving tax breaks without conditions and believing that somehow that money will trickle down. As we see with the Trump corporate tax breaks the money went to stock buybacks.

It's not just AOC but she cheered the loss of these 25,000 Amazon jobs, many of which are high paying.

Let's assume that these were terrible jobs. Why would people take these terrible jobs if they had better options? How have you improved their lives by taking away 25,000 terrible jobs that they would have taken?

You'd have to ask her and everyone else who didn't want Amazon there those questions. I've said it would have been great for Queens to have Amazon there.

Right- all of it went to tax breaks. Not one company became more profitable and hired anybody. None. All went to buybacks.
Yet,...somehow.unemployment dropped. Weird. Oh I know-would have happened anyway.

I would gladly be landing on AOC with both feet if it were not for Amazon's statement on the way out the door. AOC has nothing to be celebrating here. Her argument is as half-baked as it gets.

There is nothing to celebrate here. However Amazon is hardly clean in this. They had a deal. Who the heck did Amazon need further accommodations from unless their intention was not to actually stick to the deal they signed, intending to bend NY over the desk once they had NY part way into the project, heavy in state expenditures and light in actual jobs and tax revenue to that point.

Amazon's statement is dripping with messaging and none of it is very appealing. Amazon is pretty close to whining because local citizens are not fighting to lap the dirt from Amazon's shoes. Why is that Amazon? When were you going to bend NY over the desk and demand more, when you had them by the short hairs much like a bad borrower that the bank simply has no control over because he owes them too much money? Is that when you bend NY over the desk?

There is much blame to go around and nothing to celebrate. But Amazon is far from clean in this mess. There is no sense to Amazon picking up its marbles and going home unless it suddenly saw a grand plan of bending NY over the desk simply not something they were going to be able to execute in the face of a partner simply unwilling to play along with a rigged game.

This represents such a failure on all sides. Most NYer's wanted the Amazon deal. Yet Amazon got spooked because not each and every NYer was creaming their pants. What kind of a silo does Amazon exist in? Its NY for God sake. 100% of NYers are not going to cream their pants about anything.

Where was NY political leadership in support of this deal, vacationing somewhere? What a failure on all sides.
