Am I the only one who's noticed that republicans are sparing no expense to rescue the economy?

We are in a simplistic regime.
And the country wants simplistic summaries.
Of course there's much more to it but on the surface, the MAIN features of the two packages are what they are, yes? No?

Yes of course there's a lot more stuff in there.
Know why?
Because the House passed over 400 pieces of legislation which McConnell has thrown in the round file ever since Dems took the House, that's why.

Also, the Senate plan is pretty much going to be overseen by Trump, according to his statement, VERBATIM, made yesterday. He SAID he would LITERALLY make the decisions, and with McConnell, that means the Senate will automatically approve whatever Trump tells them to approve.
How about that five hundred billion dollar slush fund!! :lamo

That's like Ferdinand Marcos backing up the BRINK'S truck to the Bank of Manila just before taking off outta there.

Pelosi's bill is completely and utterly insane and will lead to the bankruptcies of tens of thousands of American businesses large and small. To quote the Forbes Article:

Paid Family Leave. The bill amends (and expands) the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The bill would apply to private and public sector employees, no matter the size of the employer. Employees who have been on the job for at least 30 calendar days would be entitled to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave to respond to the coronavirus. This would include self-quarantines and care for family members. Specifically, employees would be entitled to two full weeks of unpaid leave, and then receive a reduced benefit. Costs to employers would be offset by tax credits.

Her bill proposes that businesses, no matter the size, need to pay for sick leave which will be "offset by tax credits". That is, businesses which are shuttered and cannot make ongoing income need to pay for their employees continued time off. That is insane. Anyone who read that and who thinks that this would work has either never been responsible for running a business of any size with employees OR wants to crash the American economy and force untold thousands of businesses across the country to close permanently.*

Which will be good for me of course because I am a bankruptcy lawyer. But for everyone else? Small business owners will be coming to me in droves after this legislation is passed to file Chapter 7, and workers will be coming to me and my colleagues to file shortly thereafter.

*The only companies that can afford to do this will obviously be massive corporations with huge cash reserves, and even they will have a tough go of it.

[...] for working people and needy Americans who will be hurt the most.
Unless you consider that to include a business owner over an employee, you have no valid point.

A business owner can be far more hurt than one of the employees.

This economic situation is the result of government MANDATED shutdowns. If government orders the economy to be destroyed then they also need to provide a remedy.

I'm sorry luther, unchecked, the virus would have shut down the economy anyway. and its almost as if you're saying it we shouldn't have provided a remedy for the Great Bush Recession. But the Great Bush Recessison was a result of govt policies. Bush's policies to be exact.

er uh Longview, you don't seem to be grasping my point. Democrat's actions are simply no different than they were 12 years ago when Bush destroyed the economy. Republicans actions are 100% opposite. Remember how republicans were simply trying to obstruct what would help the economy 12 years ago? Now they spare no expense and cant spend it fast enough. Try to respond to that instead of telling us the things you really really really want to believe.
I am not saying that both sides do not engage in the activity, but right now the people need their government to help, and that help is being delayed.

Trump should cite all the pork barrel spending ftim both sides and send it back to them to rewrite it to specifically and exclusively address this problem or override his veto. Somebody need to torce both parties to own responsibility for their grred and opportunism

I would agree, except for the time sensitive nature of the need.

Nope, both demorats and republicants in congress are trying, yet again, to take advantage of having some "must pass" legislation available in order to attach all manner of unrelated legislation to it - which otherwise had no chance of being passed on its own merits.

Rather than address specific issues/problems separately it is the habit of congress critters (from both parties) to bundle all manner of totally unrelated odds and ends of "pork" (special interest rewards?) to some "must pass" bill. That way each congress critter can claim to have voted for essential items A, Q and Y despite 'reluctantly having to accept' the rest of the alphabet of pure pork 'in order to achieve a bipartisan compromise'

sorry TT, you seem to missing the point in your determination to blame both sides. Republicans did conspire to obstruct anything and everything that would have ended the Great Bush Recession and prevented the Great Bush Depression. Democrats actions are simply no different than they were 12 years ago.

Then refute it.
Mom! I thought you were dead.
What was that? You are not my mother? No, really? Well you certainly are not in a position of authority over me, so no.
Especially as I already said that the reply was clearly sufficient. :lamo

[SUP]For forty years, Republicans have only talked about debt when they were out of the White House.

Then, it was an obsession. Mitch McConnell lurched from one government shutdown threat to the next, in order to keep stimulus from being enacted, and to preserve Bush’s deficit boosting tax cuts.

Once they had the White House, trillion dollar deficits returned.

But you don’t hear Sham Hammity or Lush Limbaugh going on about reckless borrowing, like you did in 2009.

Not a peep.

And they didn’t care about deficits when Bush was doubling the national debt, even without the crash they helped create.[/SUP]
Blah, blah, blah nonsense without recognizing that this is a totally different situation.

Sorry Longview, you're putting a lot of effort to ignore the point of the thread. Republican actions are 100% opposite of their actions 12 years ago.

don't get me wrong, I fully support the effort. Its what they should be doing but I just cant help but suspect its only because a republican is president. I don't see any protests, claims of hyperinflation, dollar collapse, market to zero. And not only are republicans no longer worried about deficits as they hope to prevent a depression, they seem to be mad that they cant spend it as fast as they want to. Golly, that's not how I remember them during the Great Bush Recession. And the ongoing negotiations only show more republican hypocrisy. Democrats are not "conspiring to obstruct" the stimulus. they are simply trying to put some adequate controls on how the money is spent. This would be common sense even if Trump wasn't president. Its even more important with him in office.

Indeed, they would be foolish in the extreme to lay a 500 billion dollar slush fund at the vile pig bastard's feet.

So now you think you can read people's minds? :lamo
Regardless; "No, simply no" was clearly a sufficient response to the bs you posted.

Excon, if this was a chatroom, you'd be king but its a debate forum. "nuh uh" is not debate nor is it the great rebuttal you think it is.

It looks like most, if not all politicians have now given up on trying to avert national bankruptcy due to the unsustainable debt.

I would love to read about this, do you have a link?

It was in Rexedar's Forbes Article:

This will turn almost every temporarily-closed business in the United States with employees into a permanently-closed business. A small business cannot pay three months of paid Family Leave for its employees when it is not making any income because the state ordered it closed. Think of all the small businesses in your neck of the woods. I have no doubt you know a few small business owners and may be friends with a few. How many of them outside of large corporations with massive cash reserves could afford to pay ALL of their employees paid family leave when their businesses were ordered closed and they are getting little to no ongoing income?

Excon, if this was a chatroom, you'd be king but its a debate forum. "nuh uh" is not debate nor is it the great rebuttal you think it is.

Remember when Yahoo Voice Chat acted a lot like CB radio, where certain "talkers" could randomly drown out others?

Stop with your nonsense and fake mind reading.

No, simply no was sufficient a response. I care not if you like it.

Nonsense, 12 years ago we did not have the GND concept, forced "diversity" programs or $500B for "voting by mail" being called essential for economic recovery.

I guess Republicans had better damn well start thinking about directing more cash at those businesses then, shouldn't they?
They're the ones in power, Trump is the one who originally said that tax cuts were all that was needed.

Here's the proof:

Tax cuts corona virus.webp

That was February 28, right when I was at the Emergency Room losing consciousness with an oxygen level of 84 and an elephant on my chest.

Sorry Longview, you're putting a lot of effort to ignore the point of the thread. Republican actions are 100% opposite of their actions 12 years ago.
Different times, different circumstances.
As with any household budget, it sometimes becomes necessary to spend money you may not have (acquire debt).
In winter, if the heating system need repair, for example.
The republicans in this case recognize the need for urgent action.

It is times like this when I see the lies, grandstanding, hypocrisy and special pleading from both sides that I question whether we were wrong to have rejected hereditary monarchy.

You aren’t the only one thinking this............

On its face, it's insane. But not as insane as forcing every business in the United States to pay three months of FMLA while most have had their doors ordered closed by local and state governments.

Like I said, Republicans are only offering LOANS. Pelosi wants direct grants. (see circled figure)

COVID19 relief Dems GOP 500Bn.webp

Oh looky, same amount as Trump's slush fund!!! :lamo

By the way, you want insane?
You want bat [censored!] crazy??

How about "Pro Life!" Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggesting old folks just DIE in order to save "the economy"?

That is an inane non-answer, Checkerboard Strangler. Tax cuts ARE NOT INCOME. Costs have to be paid with income. If the Federal government stopped paying yours and your wife's Social Security and VA checks and you got no income whatsoever, but the government said "Hey, don't worry, you don't have to pay taxes!" what good is that to you? Can you pay for your groceries or your gas with a tax cut? No.

The same very basic principle applies in business. If your business has been closed and you are making no money, the government could cut your taxes down to 0% and it will not help pay your ongoing bills or pay for your employee's FMLA.
