Law enforcement officials are not saying whether they will charge broadcaster Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist ally of President Donald Trump, for publicly threatening to “beat” Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and telling Schiff to “fill your hand”—a reference to taking up a pistol.

But, says an attorney with expertise in federal law, Jones’s threats appear to break a federal law, U.S. Code Title 18, Section 115, which makes it illegal to threaten to assault a U.S. official and provides a penalty of up to six years in prison.

“I do think that the combination of Jones’s comments would amount to a threat,” says Amanda Berman, director of legal affairs with Lawfare Project, a consortium of experts on national security law. “It seems to be a clear provocation. Ultimately, the question would have to be put to a judge or jury, but I think there is a legal basis for a conviction based on Jones’s threat, which was made ‘with intent to impede, intimidate or interfere’ with Congressman Schiff’s exercise of his duties as the ranking member of the committee investigating the connection between the Trump campaign/administration and the Russians.”

Schiff likely became a Jones target because he is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, which is investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Schiff has said there is “more than circumstantial” evidence of collusion between Trump associates and Russia.

He needs to be charged and put before a federal Grand Jury. He obviously broke the law, intentionally, and I think it can be proven that he did so with malice of forethought. He needs to pay the price for making that choice. Read the first part of my sig.

I'm sure he's harmless and is no real threat, but Wing-Nuts the follow him are Morons and don't know any better.

That's why he is not harmless and is in fact a threat to our nation and culture. People like him, on either side of the political spectrum, should be held responsible for their actions and the actions they inspire in others.

Don't restrict his right to free speech, just hold him accountable for the harm he does to others, which communicating threats of bodily harm and/or death, is a crime.

Alex Jones is an over weight, vile, obese, paranoid, tub-O-lard ............... the sooner he has a heart attack & makes it into the next world the better off this world will be ........

Wonder if he'll be able to do his podcast from prison. That aside, he has a lot of money, which means that he has a good chance of getting off the hook.

Maybe there's an FCC Violation there somewhere.

Just like Newt and Rush

Interesting. Our free speech laws are incredibly lax but not infinitely so.

I will be watching this one to see if it goes anywhere.

Alex Jones is mentally disturbed and needs to be removed from society where he can do no more harm.

Yeah. Never overestimate these folks' lack of brains: like that guy who ended up with a rifle at that DC Pizza joint to bust up Hillary's "dangerous child sex ring".

Outside of the fact there were innocent victims eat pizza ... they had to think, dude you are definitely in the wrong place.

Alex Jones is a freaking lunatic that's exploiting a segment of the population out their money.

Not going to wish harm nor death on the man, but would prefer if he wasn't paid attention to.

As to his threats or tough talk. Entertainers or famous people seem to get some liberty. Modana thought about blowing up the White House after the inauguration. Ted Nugent and anything he said. Snoop shooting clown trump with a pop gun . Alex Jones seems to fit right in.

Same overreaction just different sides of the coin.

Jones claims that Trump calls him. Really?

He also said his rant was what he does, "performance art." Really?

It wasn't a real threat, Jones is too much of a ***** to do anything about it, he just wanted to sound big. Less there's credibility behind the threat, then whatever. I wouldn't move to charge him.

He should be used an example and the exact same standard be applied to anyone else that makes these kind of statements in a public venue.

I don't think Mr. Jones demonstrated the intent required by section 115. This is still a free country, and I doubt Ms. Berman and her fellow leftists stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting a jury to convict Mr. Jones of violating that law.

It is interesting to note the general political orientation of the people whom Jones' comments make so pouty. The sort of person who tends to scorn the Second and Tenth Amendments also tends to scorn the First. Whenever anyone that people like this despise speaks harshly about a member of one of their pet grievance groups, their first impulse is to try to silence or punish the speaker. A true liberal would defend Jones' right to return that slinking weasel's insult.

In any case, I doubt it would be much of a fight even if little Adam had the stomach to pick up the gage. He looks more like a yapper than a fighter to me.

The Trump following "nut jobs" are the ones that really concern me. Jones is just a blowhard looking for ratings bumps.

You mean the SON of the foreign agent that our idiot POTUS named as National Security Advisor?

Public commentators using public airwaves making such comments to the public, but not necessarily a direct person to person threat, are given quite a bit of leeway to do so and not be prosecuted. I don't think this is going anywhere. He did not implore others to do as he said, did he?

As I read this thread it just got worse and worse. I didn't know who Alex Jones was. I thought it was some female, conservative blogger or something. Then someone mentioned she was a guy, but I thought maybe it was a typo. So, I imagined Alex was one of those hot, blond right wing bimbo chicks (like Tomi Lahren). Then another poster said Alex was not just a guy, but a fat, lard-ass to boot. Reality shattered!

The guy sounds like a complete loser. I'd say lock him up just because he ruined my day. He appears to be little more than a shock-jock. So, was anyone taking this guy seriously when he "threatened" Schiff? I mean, unless Schiff was holding the last cheeseburger on Earth, was Jones really a threat?

Not unless you want to start a civil war and make a political martyr out of him...

Nobody is going to start a war over Alex Jones. Don't be absurd.
So, Alex Jones's supporters aren't as crazy as I initial suspected.
Coming from the guy that compared Switzerland to Nazi Germany...
