3D-printed gun blueprints can be downloaded starting next month, ending lengthy legal battle

I suppose we can cross that bridge when we get there. I'm sure you would agree they are not a factor now.

Is gun powder and ammo 3D printed?

Gun powder is easy to make from materials that you can find in any grocery store. And the casings..well...if a 3D printer can make a gun I'm pretty sure that casings can be made also.

Until this becomes a problem....it is not a problem. Guns can be made in any machine shop....no 3 d printer required. That has been true for many decades. 3 D is a non issue
 
Now all you need is a cheap, $150,000 metal 3d printer.

The components can be printed. Gunpowder can be printed into different physical configurations for custom burn rate and pressure propagation. Fine powders could be made into solid or semi-solid forms just through printing. Further different materials which would not ordinarily be considered for bullet propulsion can be now because of the nature of additive manufacturing processess.

Literally, anything that burns naturally or through modified physical property or form can be considered for bullet propulsion.

Don't need primers or casings. Alternatives exist for both.

And there is a VAST difference between a machine shop making a gun and a 3D Printer. In order to make a gun in a machine shop you actually have to know what the heck you're doing. A skill set that only a relatively few has. Once 3D metal Printers become mainstream all you need is a blue print or a scanner to scan another gun. And to know where to hit the "print" button. That's it. Even a child could print a 3D gun.

As I said that requires specialized training. Not an issue now and people could have been doing this for decades so I am not really worried about the future

Not stop them. Control them. This is a non issue and if it would have been a problem it would have been a problem when the drill press and metal lathe was invented. LOL

No it doesn't. The raw materials come in cartridges just like ink for a printer. The computer and printer mixes it into the appropriate compound. All you need is a computer. Like I said, kids could do it.

Control them how? I don't think you're getting it. The raw materials do not need to come mixed already. Just like how a color printer has more than one cartridge so to does a 3D printer. The individual raw materials can be combined via a computer and the 3D Printer to make compounds. The individual raw materials can be used to make thousands of other objects that have nothing to do with guns. How are you going to control the raw materials when you have no clue who is going to make what what?

We have children that need saving today. Gun control works

Are they still more proof of concept?

Face it Kal. You want it both ways. If you say all this won't be affected by regulation then who cares if they pass those laws....but you don't want them to pass those laws.

While I applaud this I seriously wonder why the government actually thought that it was possible to actually stop blueprints for guns from being made. Anyone with the right coding skills can easily make such a blueprint. Add to that the fact that anyone (even those without coding experience) can 3D scan items into computers such a battle would be impossible to enforce to ANY degree of success.

If anything, this is perhaps an unintended consequence of our vibrant liberal to social libertarian Silicon Valley.
