2018 FIFA World Cup Thread [W:87]

I have no idea why you are ranting and raving about the US, the thread isn't about the US Pete. You can have the last say, I don't want to derail this thread any further than it has been.
Nor is it a thread about Russian laws and yet someone has been consistently posting anti Russian propoganda in the thread. My point in using the US as an example is to show hypocrisy and lack of knowledge about your own country (since most posters including the person in question are American).

But yes let's get back to football in this thread.

Some good stuff today from England especially in the first half.

But you know it's going to go tits up at some point right?

:2razz:

I always pull for England, so that pessimism is always lurking in the background.
;)

I still remember being up at 2am for the England v Brazil match in Japan (2002 WC) and flying off my sofa when Owen scored. I still had hope even after Rivaldo equalized, but that Ronaldinho free kick was like a kick to the stomach. It was a brilliant free kick, but so deflating.

2002 was the year we really should have won it. We were the better team vs Brazil and then they went down to 10 men and we just couldn’t break them down. We would have played Turkey in the semis and then Germany in the final. A Germany who we beat 5-1 a few months before.....urghhhh

I agree, if there was any squad in my lifetime that could have done it, it was that one.

I’ve been rewatching all the previous WCs recently. I still can’t watch that game lol i skip past it. I think Scholes said that at halftime “ we wanted Churchill we got John Major”.

Spain fires their manager 2 days before the first match.

He had be negotiating with Real Madrid behind the federation's back. The FA President was told 5 minutes before it was announced by Real Madrid....

Wonder what that will do to their chances and Real Madrid standing in Spain.

It obviously wasn’t ideal from him and Real to announce this before the WC it i don’t understand the rationale behind firing him.

Its called tapping up no? How would you feel about an employee that is on his way out and scheming behind your back? I would fire him on the spot.... kinda shocked that he did it and why on earth are Real Madrid.. the SPAIN team.. doing this to the national side?

Nah, I disagree. I dont see what the big deal is. He has every right to change employer after his contract runs out with the national team, and I dont see anywhere in the rules that he's not allowed to announce it beforehand.

If Spain bow out early Rubiales will get the blame and I predict he'll resign

He just extended his contract to 2020.. 3 weeks ago.

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui extends contract until 2020 | Football News | Sky Sports

You see a problem now?

For the sake of the national team, I still think firing him was the wrong decision

That there were 6 players on the squad who knew about Lopetegui's breaking of his contract before the RFEF were even aware he had been approached by RM is completely unacceptable and undermining totally of the RFEF and its president. Both Lopetegui and RM were knowingly sabotaging the national team WC campaign. I don't think Rubiales had any other option. I don't think it was a decision taken by anger, although certainly in anger. I'd be bloody furious.

Popular opinion here is divided between hard-core RM supporters and everyone else in Spain. Last couple of online polls I've looked at show about 70% support for Rubiales's decision. That chimes true with reactions I've had from footie fan friends here.

I'd love it if Hierro and La Roja overcame this and went on the win the competition, but if they fail to get out of their group I think RM, Perez and Lopetegui will come to regret their treason. Whatever the outcome, I think Lopetegui's tenure at the Bernabeu is already holed beneath the waterline.

Its one of those "damn if you do or dont" situations. Considering the amount of back stabbing he and Real Madrid did.. then I think it was the right call. Regardless of what they had done, the RM players knew, which would piss off the rest of the team... no win situation.

First goal in Russia by Russia... and fittingly by a player who got his first national team goal. Thank god it was a clear cut goal.

Seen worse opening games but also seen better. Nothing impressive about the Saudis or the Russians. But a pretty good ref preformance. Hope that continues.

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, one of the most corrupt sports organizations in the world. Vladimir Putin, president of the Russian Federation, one of the most corrupt regimes in the world.
Neither cares what the other does as long as long as there is plenty of corruption-money to be made off the World Cup.

I would say despite the lop sided score line, Saudi Arabia largely lost that game rather than Russia winning it.

Saudi was so utterly devoid of any flare or passion, no hunger for victory, just... nothing.

Russia on the other hand at least played with some gusto, I saw them a few times make some very fundamental errors another team might have severely punished them for, but it didn’t matter In this case because their opponents were so lacklustre in their approach to the game that they all could have gone off the field for a cup of tea and you wouldn’t have noticed the difference.

I commend Russia for their eagerness throughout the whole game, even at 80 minutes they were still so quick to counterattack at speed and with a hunger to score and it showed in the final tally.

As far as Saudi goes... one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen for a World Cup side.
