2018 FIFA World Cup Thread [W:87]

Well hello stranger, long time no see.

Hey mate :)
How has life treated you?

Typically takes a world cup for me to come from the shadows lol

This world cup is insane. Can't believe Germany actually is not through for the first time in ... god knows how long.

Dare I hope? Nope. We'll bottle it. We always do.

Is anyone else getting as sick of Neymar's constant histrionics as I am?

Now, I guess it's up to my other, though not bloody likely!

Still...

VAR.......like it or not?

I say it has been inconsistent....

Well, best performance by a team so far.

Parabéns, Seleção.

VAR has not been inconsistent... the human factor involved has...[emoji48]

First, I am not a soccer fan. I am 68 years old and as many times as I have tried over the years - I just don't "get it". too much in the middle of a too large field... not enough scoring... all the cliches soccer fans hate to hear and label as ignorant.

But today I watched a complete game from start to finish and enjoyed it immensely. For the first time I actually felt I understand the placement of athletes on the field and what was going on. Now some of this comes from a good buddy who is from Italy and is a fanatic. He keeps trying to educate me and maybe it has finally taken a little bit of a hold.

I watched Brazil beat Serbia 2 -0 and I can see why they call it the beautiful game.

I look forward to Monday and Brazil vs Mexico.

Old dog can learn new tricks.....

Old dog can learn new tricks.....

at least the easy tricks. ;)

I spoke to my friend on the phone to tell him how much I enjoyed the game and what i began to understand and he started talking about defensive schemes and the players attacking without the ball and stuff like that and I realized I did not learn much.

A few of us are going to meet at his house on Monday morning to watch Brazil vs Mexico so I might pick up a few more tricks.

So many superb memes coming out of all this:

Do you guys think it was stupid what Neuer did?? It was only 1-0 Korea with still 5 or 6 minutes left (time added for VAR).
That was still plenty of time to get the 1-1, which wouldve sent Germany through.
But when its 2-0 its pretty much lights out

It wouldn't have, Germany would have gained just one point for a draw, bringing it to a total of 4 points.

Mexico and Sweden already had 6.

Neuer was the best German on the pitch in all 3 games and where desperation always holds a touch of stupidity, here he saw that not taking the risk would have resulted in losing just as much.

The team wasn't going to score even if given another 3 hours of extra time, so he took the gamble and lost.

But there wasn't much to lose anymore anyway.

Embarrisingly poor performance from Germany this WC. So many of our vets played poorly: Khedira, Ozil, and Meuller were deeply dissappointing. Our lack of a strong forward killed us. And our game plan was pathetic.

Congrats Mexico and Sweden. Y all earned it.

I am so disappointed in the German team. :(

Did you notice how much better they played in the Sweden game when Boating was sent off? I didn't get the chance to watch the Korea game - I suspect the traditional sweeper role failed them again.

~ Dare I hope? Nope ~

I'm not allowing myself to either just yet. I'm just enjoying the fact there's no pressure or expectation on these lads.

Congrats Sweden (especially), got your own back for that disgusting display of jeering triumph that two stupid German team flunkies showed at your bench at the end of the match with Germany. :2razz:

Chagos!

Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

Welcome back!

I dunno man, I’ve watched every. Single. Game, bar 4 I just couldn’t stay awake for, over four hours of football a day for the last two weeks, I could use the tiniest of breaks :p

Yeah, every 4 years the WC brings out the worst in me.

IOW it brings out ME.

Considering the number of games that made taking a sleeping pill obsolete, you really shouldn't have lost out.
