2018 FIFA World Cup Thread [W:87]

Embarrassing for Poland. They were one of the dark horses supposedly

They are 6th in FIFA rankings ahead of Spain, France, England, Mexico, and Uruguay. Shows how useful those rankings are. Russia aren't in the Top 50.

That's one of the problems with the list. It is based on mostly competitive games...of which Russia has not had any for 2 years...

I hate those drawn out "gooooooaaaaaal' shouts. Spanish commentators do it for every goal they commentate on; it's nothing more than a cliché and there's absolutely nothing spontaneous or joyful about it.

It was cute the first time just an arm fart is cute the first time. Subsequent use of them becomes annoying.

And you know the guy goes home and practices it. His poor neighbors.

It's not just one guy. Here in Spain it's EVERY SINGLE COMMENTATOR does it. I know I'm an old fart but it's just another cliché that people involved in football engage in that just irks me. There are plenty more. Tell me, does anyone else cringe and get annoyed by any of the following:

  • Players crossing themselves and pointing at the sky when the come on as a sub? Even those you know aren't Catholics. Don't pretend to be devout when you're not. Keep your religion to yourself; this is football.
  • Players from Muslim countries pretending to pray on scoring/getting subbed on? Keep your religion to yourself; this is football.
  • Players and managers waving an imaginary card at the ref to try to get an opponent booked or sent off? Unsporting and disrespectful to the authority of the ref. I'd give anyone who does it an instant yellow card.
  • Commentators who haven't done their homework and learn how to pronounce a player's name? It's amusing to hear Spanish commentators pronounce Ashley Young as Ass-lay Yao-oong, but it's lazy and ignorant. Ditto English commentators with "Kevin De Broin" and Ilkay "Gundogan". It takes one Google search to learn that 'uy' in Flemish isn't 'oi', and that 'ğ' is silent. The list is a long one.
  • Lazy national stereotypes being trotted out when inapplicable i.e. talk about 'efficient, organised' Germany when they scraped a fairly shambolic 95th minute win against Sweden; praising the 'technical flair' of Brazil when they ground out a fairly humdrum win against Costa Rica. It's a sign of commentators with nothing to say and no imagination.

So, apart from that, everything's lovely!

Yes,, yes,,, the traditional crossing the chest and pointing to the sky.

Do they do this during practice too? No, it is for the tv cameras.

If there was a god, do they really think with all the strife around the world that god would be interested in this particular soccer game?

I don't know if Russia just gave up or what, but Uruguay kicked their ass.

I didn't see it but was following the scores online and I was thinking they may have laid down and just gone into reserve mode because they were already locked in for the next round.

Today I want Iran and Spain to win and knock Ronaldo out of the picture.

~ and knock Ronaldo out ~

How Ronaldo is still on the pitch is a wonder to me. He ineffectually used his elbow on his opponent but it's the intent behind it that says he should have been red-carded.

Oooh... Spain behind again.

Did he get a yellow? Was watching the Spain game. If no yellow then they can punish him retrospectively.. of course being Ronaldo FIFA won't do it.

Did see the last 2 min of the Portugal game and after the game a Portugal player got a yellow... wtf?

Yeah. He got a yellow after review. Doubt they will make that go up to a red.

Portugal vs Uruguay. Come on BIG U!

They cant. Only way to give him the red was if the ref missed the incident.

Ronaldo was awarded a yellow card, UK commentators split - some say yellow and others said shouldn't have been carded... To me that just OKs elbows to the face as a method of getting past someone and no penalty.

Spain incredibly lucky to top the group. I was working but had the match on in the kitchen and honestly Spain looked terrible. Soft and sluggish at the back, lacking ideas and penetration in midfield and toothless up front. They should be very grateful not to be facing the Uruguayans in the next round, Suárez and Cavani would make mincemeat of Piqué and Ramos in this form. I think the managerial turmoil is starting to make the team unravel. Hierro looked baffled and terrified on the sidelines; he's in waay over his head when it comes to tactics, game-plan and thinking on his feet. I could see them squeaking a result against a very limited Russian side, but they'll go no further unless they can stop the rot.

Scandalous penalty given against Portugal which would have huge implications later on.

Agreed.

I'm okay with England's performance so far. I hope we lose against Belgium Thur.

Yes, scandalous decision on the penalty, but equally scandalous not to have red-carded Ronaldo for his forearm smash. I just watched the highlights and a draw seemed an eminently just result. Loved the penalty save too. What a hero that Iranian keeper is!

My choice of Round-of-16 opponent would be Senegal, so whatever result achieves that is fine with me. Belgium is also my pick as WC winners, so Thursday's a win-win for me whatever the result.

Well the Thur game chooses the group they face. Dependent on who is first

Is it bad to say I fell in love with Senegal for their fans? Made me smile seeing their training videos let along them in the pitch. The Japan/Senegal was a proper game
The near-enough sexual harassment/groping/wrestling we've been seeing in this so far has been surprising.

Agreed and Pique on a different day could have seen red early on, reckless from him.
