2019-2020 NHL Thread - Ice Hockey Baby!!!

I see Don Cherry got fired for comments unrelated to hockey. Complaining about people not buying or wearing poppy's for veterans day. Always interesting to see what he is wearing. At 85 he probably could care less but it might be a good time to retire. Big game Wed. as Taveras and the Leafs visit the Barn. Go ISLES!!!

This is a thread that I would love to be a part of, but not having cable and being a wild fan i really don't have much to comment on at this time...

Man I miss my NHL package...

Taveras ain't the threat he's cracked up to be. I just don't get the fuss about him.
He's good. He ain't great.

On Wednesday I'll be watching the Flyers get totally trashed by the Caps.
So long winning streak. It's been a nice ride.

Taveras was an Islander favorite for many years. The fan base felt betrayed with the way he left. Then everyone wrote them off after losing their "superstar". The Barn will be rocking on Wed. I see Simmonds got another goal. The Devils look better as did Hart in that shootout win. Good luck in Washington.

He would have been fine if he had not tied it to immigrants. As it was, Sportsnet does not want to step into political crap. This was all on Cherry.

Marner won't be there tho.

The streaming package from the NHL is pretty good. Never had a problem with the stream, choice of home or away broadcast. Pricey tho.

All the better. They took over 50 shots at Lehner without him. Still lost.

85 year old man says stupid ****. Not exactly headline news, if ya think about it.

It was way past time for Don to focus on his shuffleboard game.

I can watch many Flyers games on my iphone using the "My Teams" app.

Pretty sure it's not a Flyers only kinda thing. It's full name is "My Teams by NBC Sports" I believe.

Lol...awesome, because few people are capable of following a hockey game on a phone. Hell, most can’t figure out where the puck is on a giant screen TV.

I get the impression GDViking is a fan, so I'm sure he could do it. Plus I'd guess it'd work on a tablet too wouldn't it?

It's better than nothing.

I only bring it up because I cannot count the number of times I have had to explain the game and key people in on how to track the puck, especially live. "Watch the guy with his stick on the ice."

So I'll happily take the one point against the Caps as there was a ton of times the Flyers could have lost that game if it weren't for Carter Hart.
Surprised Gudas didn't really sting the Flyers, but then again things evened out with Niskonen not really stinging the Caps.

On the topic of consistency, the Flyers next game is against the crappy Ottawa Senators.

Flyers have played 5 really good games in a row against some really solid playoff contending teams.

Do they fall apart against Ottawa and suffer an embarrassing road loss?
Based on the last few years of watching.... probably.

Isles are in Philly on Saturday. Should be another grinder assuming Hart shows up to play. He has looked good since his poor performance against the Isles. Simmonds scored another goal but the Devils lost.

With another back-to-back situation not sure if it'll be Hart or Elliot, but both have been playing real well in November so that shouldn't be the issue.

Devils lost to Ottawa right?

Is Ottawa figuring out how to play hockey? Right before the Flyers show up?

A sample of the signs at the Barn. Made me chuckle.

They didn't fall apart, a tough 2 - 1 loss. Ottawa has been playing better. I guess they didn't score on the double minor at the end of the 3rd. Another loss by Toronto at home against the Bruins.

Carter Hart played awesome again. If not for the goal tending the Senators could have won by far more than 1 goal.

Yes - The Flyers powerplay is absolutely stinking awful. It's the damn first line. They can't do crap.
Many of us wonder, as well as scream at the TV, why don't the coaches start the powerplay with the the second unit line?

It's pathetic. The first line eats up 75% of the powerplay clock with little to no damage done, then the second line has less than 30 seconds to try to get something going.

The Flyers coaches, when it comes to the powerplay are guilty of insanity.
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

It's so frustrating.

And JvR couldn't buy a goal right now with all the gold in Fort Knox.

I won't be able to watch tonight's game with the Isles. Perhaps that's a good thing. :3oops:

Bummer. My wife is at a charity function, just filled the pellet stove. I am set.

Well I suggest you stick to the first 2 periods. Greiss was not sharp but kept the Isles in the game. Couldn't score on a 4 on 1. Elliot out of his net twice in the first 5 minutes, lucky the Isles couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Out shot the Flyers like 12 to 4 in the second but outscored 1 - 0. Poured it on in the 3rd. Flyers had trouble with changes and too many men on the ice. Good game, exciting OT. Shoot out is a lot of luck. I do think the Flyer playing 3 in 4 nights hurt them in the 3rd. A bit tired especially after some D zone time and icings. I actually switched to some of the Toronto / Penguins game as I enjoy watching the Leafs get plastered. No Crosby didn't seem to matter. We get them for a home & home next week.

Yeah, I read that the Flyers had a three to nothing lead going into third period. On home ice. And eventually lost the game in a shoot-out.
So they gave up three unanswered goals in third period. :doh

Same scenario now for quite a few years. They get hot for a streak of games, then they flounder and negate any advances they made while on that streak.

Infuriating.

And the Maple Leaf's free fall continues. Will they pull out of it before they have to fire Babcock? The problems with the team are probably not his fault(at least much), but if they keep losing like this, they will have to do something.

So the Flyers veterans (except for Elliot) have all but disappeared from having any relevance on the ice.

I'm ready for any player on the Flyers with more than 3 years in the NHL to be put on the auction block and priced to move.

Bring on the rookies and lets start building around them.

Frost is brought up for his first game ever in the NHL, and he scores one of the most beautiful goals I've seen from anyone on the Flyers in a long time.
Against Bobrovsky. No easy task.

Meanwhile the veteran core of this team continues to just sleep somewhere and not seem to care about anything ice-hockey related.

Leafs fired Babcock today - and you're right, it's really not his fault that the Leafs are a mess so far this season. I'm not a big fan of Babcock and I think he's pretty over-rated and wasn't a big fan of the hiring since he won one cup in Detroit with arguably a dynasty type talent base.

But that said, the Leafs' downfall this season can be traced back to Brendan Shanahan and his decision not to extent Lou Lamoriello two summers ago and then, rather than choose Hunter to replace him he promoted Dubas as the new GM, presumably because rumour had it that Colorado was going to hire Dubas as their new GM at the time.

Since Dubas has been in place, the Leafs have overpaid each of their young RFAs - something Lamoriello would never have done. Lou would have let Nylander sit out the entire season last year until he came back at Lou's price and with that the Marner contract would never have been so rich. In addition, Dubas doesn't appear to be that great a judge of talent and relies far too much on analytics, but I guess that's what some "in the know" think is the way of the future. His first disaster was not resigning McAleney as backup goalie and the Leafs have been a mess since. Also, so far, it's been a disaster for the Leafs with his trades. Dubas believes a cup team can be built solely on elite offensive talent and so far he's been proven WRONG! Just look at St. Louis last year - far more "sandpaper" as Don Cherry would say and far fewer "sweethearts". Washington the year before was much the same.

Babcock, for all his stubbornness and faults, at least knows what's needed to win in the playoffs and to win cups - he just hasn't been afforded the players by management in order to do it.

I'll revise my pre-season prediction and say that instead of winning the division, the Leafs are far more likely to miss the playoffs and with their poor decisions on contracts they're likely to go the way of the Blackhawks without winning the cups.
