2018 FIFA World Cup Thread [W:87]

Croatia is looking pretty damn solid right now. Anyone peg them as the dark horse for this year?

~ It was as if Argentina players were on a lunch break ~

If you look at other TV angles during a majority of Croatia attacks - the Argentine midfield tended to walk back as Croatia attacked the goal. Their stomachs just weren't in it all game.

There was no sporting fighting spirit - there was however bad tempered fouling by those frustrated at their performance.

Yes but Croatia was hardly innocent of tackling hard and brutal. It was their game plan at the start...

Well TBH they seemed to run out of stamina in the Peru game too. Fitness levels not up to scratch? Are the training sessions too hard? Is the age profile of the team a bit too old? I noticed that only 3 of today's players were under 26. Must be an explanation somewhere.

They play a very pressing game, so it is not a fitness issue tbh.

Does anyone feel sorry for Messi??
Because I sorta do

I feel sorry for Messi because some people are blaming him for not lifting Argentina to greatness. What they forget is that football is a team game, and even Ronaldo has a team that is capable of playing together behind him.

However his performance last night was below what we are use to see.

In my opinion it is the managers fault.. his team planning is horrible.

I won't dispute many Croatian tackles were brutal, the refereeing of some matches has been poor. Oh, by the way do you NOW finally accept Harry Kane was rugby tackled or should I make an eye exam appointment for you?

Nope, not from the single twitter video I have seen.

As for the Croatians... the first foul against Argentina was after 3 seconds.. they made 16 fouls in the first half alone, and some were actually viewed by the VAR system to see if it was for a red. So yes, the Croatians were brutal, but that does not excuse the Argentinians though.

Oh hell, yes! I feel sorry for Messi and Agüero. Messi for being the only good player in a truly abysmal midfield. Salvio, Pérez, Pavón and Mascherano were all absolutely clueless; they had no positioning instinct, no plan and one inclination, to give the ball to Messi, whether or not he was in a position to use it. The defence was scarcely any better. Otamendi, Tagliafico and Acuña were all sloppy and looked demotivated. Messi had a rotten game, but who wouldn't have had in those circumstances? Agüero didn't have a terrible game but was sacrificed on the altar of his manager's tactical incompetence.

If anyone should have been ashamed of his performance last night however, it is the manager. Absolutely incompetent. He should spend less time in the tattoo parlour and more in front of the computer and on the road seeing how real tacticians handle going behind.

Yes, and I hope the manager gets fired before the Nigeria game. Everyone knows Messi is a genius on the ball, so all opposition teams will pack players around him and the Argentinian Manager played right into that.. by insisting in the play style of "give Messi the ball". It clearly showed a lack of tactical awareness by Sampwhatshisname.

The real question, which some are asking.. was it because Messi ordered it so, or not. I can see Ronaldo controlling tactics, but Messi? Sure he has enough power to not be subbed but to outright dictate that all balls should go through him because he is god on the pitch? No this was and is the managers idea, and it is flawed, which is why he must go.

Thank god for the VAR.

Sorry Neymar, maybe you can have an Oscar but not a penalty for that one.

I’m glad they’ve changed things like VAR, it’s a huge step.

Here’s one more thing that boils my blood that needs to end, this obvious time wasting with substitutes leisurely strolling off the pitch.

Neymar and Brazil are a disgraceful bunch at times, hope they get put in their place again.

Well, since Ireland and US didn't get in, I cheered for Costa Rica, where I want to retire to, but...they are toast.

So, I have to get fully behind Iceland, a wonderful country with great people that I want to get back to!

(that and cheering for England to lose!):2razz:

Well technically the ref should add 30 seconds to the game so they have that to get off...

Nigeria vs Iceland. .. on one side I want my Viking cousins to do well (yes even those Swedes), but on the other hand I would like for the last day in the group to be competitive. Nothing worse than dead rubbers as they are called.

I haven't got a problem with that. The refs add time on for stuff like that, even more so in this WC by the look of it. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Great performance from Nigeria. They look like a different team from the one that lost to Croatia. Iceland looked tired and all out of ideas.

You f**kin kidding me? I captured video off BBC iPlayer, put it on YouTube and linked it into a post for you. Go back a few pages.

Yep.

Iceland, supposed to be one of the fairytale stories of the World Cup, coming competed unravelled in that second half.

My apologies, totally missed that. Thank you. However it does not shed much more light in my opinion. Yes he is holding Kane, but Kane is also holding him. Rio is sounding like an ass with his comments "not even looking at the ball".. yes he was.. not all the time of course, but he was looking at the ball in the beginning.

My point is, it is not a rugby tackle.. you see that **** weekly in the PL, and it would have been a weak penalty if given, especially with the other English player also committing a foul. Saying that, we both know that you are pissed at this, and I am pissed at the penalty against Denmark yesterday. It is football.

Pete, you've written such a whitewash it's incredible. Let's just leave it there as you seem determined to ignore reality.

Honestly surprised by how badly Iceland lost. I was really rooting for them.

Not whitewashing anything. I see 2 guys fouling each other... that is all. You are pissed because it involves England.

I am pissed that Denmark has a penalty against it because of VAR... no way he could avoid the hand. Danish media question it... the rest of the media barely mentions it. Guess what... not many mention the "rugby tackles" either. Not seen one mention in the Danish media..and barely a mention during the live broadcast on German TV.
