Navy recruit is second woman to die at Illinois boot camp in 2 months

I'm assuming those are sports references...I don't watch much sports...or any, really. I'm kinda weird.

Gatorade was invented at UF (Gator aid). Those are other SEC teams.

Ah.

So, they invented watering down coolaid?

Water with sugar and salt. It was a space-age scientific breakthrough. And you'd be wise to demonstrate some respect for this otherworldly achievement.

It's what plants crave!

Back on subject, this more than likely was as has been said many times, a pre-existing condition. And it happens all the time. Every year we have sports stars at all levels from High School to professional dying under similar conditions. And if the NBA with the high salary and high end medical tests can not detect such a defect, how can the military?

Do not forget that Arthur Ashe was at the peak of his performance in 1979. The year before he went 10-4 in Grand Slam games, and then he had a heart attack. His was the first major case where it was determined the degree that genetics play in such events. His mother had died of a heart disease at the age of 27, his father had heart attacks at 55 and 59. So the odds were greatly increased he would have one. And sadly he was preparing to return to tennis when he had to have a secondary bypass because his first had failed. That was the surgery in which he contracted HIV.

And this is really something we can not screen for. My mom's side runs with cancer, my father's with heart disease. He had a heart attack, as did my grandfather. My grandmother had several strokes, and high blood pressure is something they all had. Yet I have not (yet) had any of those problems, and am still highly active for my age.

However, I would also encourage anybody planning on joining the military to work up to it before they even join. I was active in sports in high school (skiing, sailing, bowling, BMX), and a year before I joined the Army (at 43) I started running to get myself back into shape. It can be quite a shock for the body if somebody sedentary suddenly starts to participate in high stress sports without any build-up.

Kelsey Nobles.

The initial physical fitness assessment bundle includes a 1.5 mile run. Perhaps medical screening tests need to be more rigorous?

Regardless, my deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

Good thing she didn't make it in... could you imagine her in combat?

Sad but it is a sign of the times. Young people today are in terrible shape. They spend all their time playing video games or watching the tube. I read somewhere that 70% of high school seniors could not qualify physically for the military. Back when I got drafted, if you had a pulse you were in. Those who were in poor shape ended up in the fat farm at basic.
