Grocery Store Update:

I 'bake' my hard "boiled" eggs. 325 degree oven, place a damp towel over the rack and place eggs on towel. Takes about 32 mins in my oven. And if they crack while cooking...no mess except for a few shells cuz they are hard by then. I put them in ice cold water asap after baking and they tend to peel pretty well.
I'll have to try that (except my oven is large and takes a long time to heat up :( ). That could really come in handy when I'm boiling more than 2 dozen.

I think you'll appreciate this "analysis" of the best way to hard cook an egg from thekitchn.com. Took me awhile to find it again and I just posted a junky one earlier.

Well I preheat for sure. And time depends on what shelf you put them on too. I experimented a bit at first.

do you not empty the hot water and immediately cover the boiled eggs with ice and cold water for about 5 minutes?
do that, empty the water and shake the pot with the lid on. remove the lid and find that most of the shells have peeled off

You must have to shake that pot really, really hard. I do pour out the hot water and replace it with ice. With a good egg, I expect to crack it where the air bubble is and peel it in just 2-3 movements. It really ticks me off to pick at the shells.

Now this is a new one. Man, you learn something new every day!

Farm-raised are healthier. And they don't have to be refrigerated either.

Yup. I loved my layers. Lost my last few to a bobcat and havent gotten more but will someday. They free-ranged in my pasture with the horses and were a kick to watch. But...with that freedom came danger too :(

let that ice sit and do its work. in a few minutes the outer shell will separate from the inner egg and that pot shaking will do most of the shell removal for you

Sigh, I know. Hawks making lazy circles in the sky, just as the song from "Oklahoma!" goes. We think coons got the last of the chickens even though they were locked in every night. Whatever it was ripped their heads off. Terrible.

I'm going to try this experiment. Still think that you're talking about super-vigorous shaking. I will see!

I kept my coop open during the day and they could go in and lay. Something went in after my sweetest one...she would fly up on my shoulder... in the nest box and ripped off her head and didnt eat her. Someone told me weasels will do that and just drink the blood :( It was during the day.

:( Ya, whatever got the last of the chickens didn't eat them either, just ripped off their heads.

The new chicks are home. I'm not a chicken-person and had never even heard of mille fluer d'uccles, but they will have fuzzy feet and beards. They're not known as among the best layers, but they needed to be rescued. No way they are 3 months old. More like 5-6 weeks tops (and they're already scared, and a huge storm is moving in, and it's thundering). And the kid brought home a young white Japanese bantam rooster who is a handsome teenager. The chicks are treating him like mommie.

Oh I hope your roo stays nice! They are amazing guards....but they can turn into buttholes when they mature. My tenants have frizzles...that sounds like what you might have? Are they white?

The chicks look like this (but don't have their beards yet): Belgian d'Uccle Chicken: Everything Worth Knowing - Backyard Poultry

I wouldn't say so aloud, but they're very homely right now.

This young rooster seems sweet, but you never know. At one time the kid had dozens of roosters, and most were okay. But the last one, Otis, had a bad attitude. All she'd ever say was, "He's just an asshole."

Oh totally cute! Nothing like the frizzles. Good luck with the roo. Good ones are well worth it.

It was reported back to me that the kid's first statement after leaving the chicken-lady's house was to the birdies--"I'm your new mommie!"

Somebody has to love them.

Hey guys, how many of you are seeing shortages at grocery stores, for normal stuff, meat, eggs, cheese, etc...and what area of the country?

I ask because freight, including food, just dried up....normally there are hundreds of loads if not thousands out of any one spot in the country, Chicago, St. Louis, KC, Dallas, Atlanta etc, and lately, (this week) you can count them on both hands, maybe a foot too....from what I can ascertain from talking to guys out there, and brokers etc, DCs are stuffed to the gills with product, there's no more room to put the crap.....some DCs like Kroger, 48 hour wait, Aldi's 36 hours etc....

I want to know if it's making it's way to the shelves, etc, are you seeing shortages etc?

I re-upped at the supermarket today. I found EVERYTHING.

Well, everything but rubbing alcohol, that is. I don't think we'll be seeing that one again for a long, long time.

Went shopping today.

The hand soaps, bleach, Lysol and cleaning wipes were plenty. The paper towel/TP aisle was still ravaged, but managed to find some Brawny PTs. The only TP still on the shelves were generic stuff...the kind that doesn't absorb well and/or can bring your butt to tears.

Where? I need bleach. I've got a ton of outdoor cleaning to do and bleach takes care of green algae like magic. And is good as a diluted spray on mold. J/k I'm not heading to IL for bleach!

I e-mailed Walmart this morning to ask why toilet paper, rubbing alcohol, and facial tissues are in-store purchases only. If the goal is social-distancing, why do I have to enter a store to buy the one product that everybody buys? There are purchase-limits online too, so I just don't understand this.

I wonder if they fear if people can get this stuff online then why not get everything online. I'm sure a lot of their profit comes from people making spontaneous purchases while in the store.

Walmart wants no more than five people per 1000 feet and has now established one-way traffic down aisles. Shoppers are being allowed inside one by one. Maybe its hope in not selling TP online is fear that it will instantly sell out somehow? If so, how is this any different than B.C. (Before Covid) briskets being on sale for 99 cents a pound around the Fourth of July and limiting purchases to two briskets and families sending various family members back to each buy two briskets?

I think it's an extreme measure to control the purchase limitations. People could use VPN to make several online identities to make multiple purchases?

Gotcha! Last time I was at Walmart it was a zoo. That was about a month ago. I'm doing all delivery at the moment and it seems to be working out except for the products you mentioned.
