My family story was Granny was full blooded Cherokee. For years my cousin tried to get proof that it was based on fact. Couldn't prove it.

So, our family believes the story is true. But, none of us ever claimed to be Native Americans.

So, even if I could prove my Granny was full blooded Cherokee. I would never claim to be Native American. I would only claim Granny was Native American.

When filling out paperwork I check the caucasian box and not the Native American box.
