Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton to show their funny sides at annual dinner - CBS News

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have some tough shoes to fill -- could either of them take over President Obama’s role as comedian in chief?

With 19 days left until the election, they’ll have their chance to try out Thursday night at the 71st annual Alfred E. Smith charity dinner, where many presidential candidates in the past have taken a break from the vitriol of the campaign and make fun of themselves.

It will be the last time the two will share a stage before Americans head to the polls on Nov. 8.

Both nominees are slated to attend the 9 p.m. ET white-tie event at the Waldorf Astoria, which will air live on CBSN, that benefits Catholic charities and some of the neediest children in New York. The fundraiser honors former New York governor Al Smith, who ran for president in 1928 and became the first Catholic nominee of a major party.

I think the focus will be Trump and how he behaves.

I am not going. I traded my tickets to a dead guy for his ballot so I can vote twice for Kennedy. I just can't picture either candidate trying to be funny.
Oddly enough I have this feeling that Trump can be funny.

Yeah, this is where I'm at. Honestly, the thought of it just feels super awkward.

I can sort of picture how Hillary will attempt humor. It makes me feel embarrassed on her behalf.

As far as Trump, I can't even imagine that. I have no idea. I really hope he doesn't try to write his own jokes, is all I'm sure of.

Really? Man, I dunno... Seems like every time we're heard him try to be amusing, he winds up being so horrifically offensive that even my racist 90-year-old grandmother would have shaken her head in disapproval.

Great humor requires focus and introspection. If there's one thing we've learned about Trump over these last couple years, it's that he is not in possession of either one.

It will be interesting. I just stumbled upon this today. Was not aware that it was held after the debates, a few exceptions did occur.

Actually, this would be pretty funny....

Donald Trump: Oedipus married his mother. Disgusting. My mother wouldn't be my first choice. Believe me.

Ugh. Trump is capable of being funny. He's made me chuckle a couple times. Clinton, on the other hand, can't do funny. It's not coded into her DNA. I feel bad for her having to go through that. I've had to do public stints where I have to be something that I'm not, and it's no damn fun.

Well said. I pretty much hate the bitch but I am not blind to the truth of what you say.

I don't think he can but then I don't think Hillary can either.

Holy... ****ing... ****.

Guys. Turn it on, at the link above. Trump is being dirty as hell and is being actually and near-constantly booed. At a ****ing white-tie.

Booo Donald...boooooo....grrrr

He started out with some decent jokes....and then...he just went from bad to worse....to whiney butt hurt.

Clinton is pretty funny. She's got some good zingers.

Maria Bartiromo...is very eye catching tonight. lol

I rewinded it to keep up, and the guy to his right (our left) isn't looking very comfortable.

The guy with medal on his chest? I wonder what thats all about.

Trump blew it again...he didn't seem to get the idea or spirit of the event. Not enough self deprecation, apparently.

She actually did very well, had lots of crack-up zingers for folks around the room, and had several hilarious self-deprecating zingers on herself. Frankly, she owned the room. Had me in stitches.

Guilliani looked like he was going to pop a blood vessel when Hillary brought him into the mix, lol.

I'll give it a shot. Admittedly, my attention span made me wander off after Trump, who, by the way, will go down as the most classless political figure of the decade.

Say what you will, Hillary has access to Obama's speech writers and although she doesn't have Obama's wicked comedic timing, she really had the entire room... with a few notable exceptions... cracking up!

Yes, the guy with the medal, but I spoke too soon. The guy to his left, after rump starts with "Hillary is soooo corrupt..."

The Don got one of the best lines

Pardon Me?

Even Hillary laughed

Alas, he then started in on This Crooked Hillary is So Corrupt... and received repeated boo's for his vicious, partisan attack, which violated both the spirit and the rules of this charity event.

But yes, Hillary was a great sport and laughed at nearly all the zings directed at her.

Who even gives a **** about the spirit of some royal event?
