Unemployement Drops: Legitimate or Not?

Ya' know, Adam, I wish I could find what I've looked for on and off for a year or so. Some time ago, I don't remember when, (but during Obama's presidency) the people who put together the unemployment numbers changed the way they'd done it forever. I remember there being quite a bit of controversy about it at the time because it, effectively, lowered the numbers. That's where I'm coming from. I wish to heck I could find something about it, but I can't think of a search term that will get me there.

You do realize that the DOL Commissioner is an Obama appointee?
Duration of unemployment in the CPS?

Progressives don't realize the relationship between jobs and taxes. Part of the reason is the fact that nearly half the working population doesn't pay any income tax - so they don't care. If they're not paying income tax, then why not feed them government cheese?

What's the difference? 2-3k a year between a job and welfare?

Climbing the ladder is difficult these days for several reasons - one of the main reasons is no incentive. What incentive do people have these days to climb to the top of the ladder? Many are content with the free taxpayer money, and others are pissed because they're 35 and working at Burger King.

I am constantly amazed at the attitude that people on welfare are somehow content to be so. LIke any system, it can't be perfect, and no doubt there are a % of bottom feeders who have no pride nor shame.

People who think that a person 35 years old flipping burgers is somehow lazy or underachievers. this is pure prejudice and does not take into account the stupid people of the world, the emotionally damaged people (know of any fetal alcohol syndrome victims?) etc. They don't care that the guy flippping burgers often also mops floors at night to feed his family and still needs food stamps. How many that accept welfare benefits are the working poor?

Those that denigrate social assistance recipients think everyone should think and behave like they do. They have no empathy nor a deep understanding of human nature and the precepts of social anthropology are alien to them.

they seem to have this vision that those on welfare are all a bunch of lazy minorities lounging around all day watching television and drinking malt liquor, when in reality those stereotypes represent a small percentage of those in poverty.

Nah, piss on all of them, the lazy bums. Not a very christian attitude in a supposedly christian nation. What would jesus say about that?

I would love to debate the Reagan years with you but you cannot seem to come to grips with the Obama record. Reagan isn't on the ballot, the lack of leadership of Obama and his results are. We saw Wednesday night what an incompetent empty suit he is and the record proves that his resume running for President was right.

Don't know about you but I would take a 1.7 trillion dollar debt today vs. the 5.4 trillion debt Obama generated. Feel free to apply the inflation to that 1.7 trillion debt and tell me what you come up with. What you fail to understand again is the difference between income taxes and use taxes. Further you seem to lack a basic understanding that 47% of income earners in this country couldn't care less about raising income taxes since they don't pay any.

Psst Reagan was a bigger spender

Wait until you're paying $12.75 for a gallon of milk in 2016 while making $22.22 an hour...

I'm 32 now, I'll probably be 50-70 before I see a steady economy (if I'm lucky) which I know won't happen.

so you think inflation will kick in at something like 30% a year for the next four years or will it be all in one big jump?

Interesting. You think it will take 18 to 38 years for the economy to stabilize if at all? I'm not sure what you mean by stablize, but even at the low end that would be an unprecedented period of time to recover and prosper. However it is an interesting observation that implies that leadership and political ideology have no lasting positive effect on the economy. Kinda makes debating the economy moot. How about them nats?

My bet is you have never gone to the BLS. Here let me help you FROM BLS. Everything I have posted came from this chart. Show me where I am wrong
You're coding is atrocious. That's the first place you went wrong.
Can't even tell wtf point you're trying to make from that wall of text.
Next, you didn't provide a link. How're we to know if you made something up if we can't see the original?

You may be wrong? You bet you are wrong, I posted the same data you have posted, there were 12.088 million unemployed, 802,000 discouraged workers in the 22.7 million U-6 number so not sure what you are even talking about. Nothing you posted refuted anything that I posted. Maybe you ought to pay closer attention and actual read the data I posted.

Then you wouldn't have any problem going back to the Reagan Budgets adjusted for inflation?

I didn't say anything about inflation. I pointed out per capita government spending.

What does per capita spending have to do with the deficit and debt we have today. I suggest we go back to the Reagan budgets adjusted for inflation. How about you?

I really don't want to get into the numbers game too deeply .. but I will say this .. numbers can be screwed around to say whatever ... here is a classic example of what I mean ...
Rather than saying something about numbers it seems more of an example of how the human brain tries to take the easy way out much to our chagrin. I think it says much more about how human brain isn't as swuft as it thinks it is than it says about about numbers. ymmv

Yeah because idiots just don't exist, because they have some sort of "defect" in your world - as if many are incapable of getting a degree and doing something with their lives.

The only one being racist here is you for treating perfectly normal and intelligent people as if they're unable to succeed. They're only "dumb" in my mind because they're more than content with their government assistance.

Me - I totally understand given the fact I'm in a similar position (not on welfare, but close) despite the fact I have a degree.... Yeah I'm over qualified to flip burgers but don't have the experience or meet the racial criteria to get a job in a position I'm actually qualified in...

Do you have any idea how many times I have heard this line "I would hire you but we need to meet a quota." That means "I will would hire you but I cant because you're not minority."

Oh yea - I don't know!

No you don't know....

Do I really have to explain this to the self professed business genius?

I suggest you stop trying to divert from my point.

Yep, you sure do since you are so much smarter than I could ever hope to be for you see, the Obama results aren't what I posted and he has been the best President in history. We have a booming economy, great job creation, exceptional economic growth, and reduction in our national debt. I can see that Obama supporters will now be working towards elimination of the term limits for the President and make Obama President for life

You thought Obama would be a good President and were wrong. What makes you think you aren't wrong about Romney? Romney has nothing to do with any of the Obama results nor your son being unemployed for 2 1/2 years

We are recovering very slowly. I think Romney will damage the progress we have made. He is not consistent in what he plans to get the country moving. He changes like the wind. It depends on who he is speaking to. I do not think Obama has done everything right but he is the better choice to keep making progress in recovery.

...what happens when you're booted off unemployment? what happens to those who are temp workers who don't qualify for unemployment? you're in a void where you no longer count via the government statistics - or at least under their formula.
The BLS don't seem to take into account wheteher or not someone has exhausted their benefits.

How the Government Measures Unemployment

[h=4]Who is counted as unemployed?[/h]Persons are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work.

You don't seem to drop off the rolls until you stop actively looking for work.

That is your opinion and yet that recession affected every American and Reagan addressed it with leadership. Congress balked and Reagan went to the American people, Obama delegated both the stimulus and almost everything else to the Congress and that isn't leadership.

Recessions always effect every citizen so I'm not sure what your point is there. Not sure what you mean by reagan went to the american people - when, how and what did they do? Delegation isn't leadership? - nonsense. A good leader provides vision, lays out plans, sets objectives and empowers his people to "giterdun". It has come as a shock to most americans that congress became gridlocked, not over the merits of any individual proposal, but merely on ideological grounds. I cannot recall a congressional session in my adult lifetime, where a substantive bloc of the party gaining control over congress states on day 1 "no compromise" and proceeds to block everything they possibly can. Can you think of one?

I would love to debate the Reagan years with you but you cannot seem to come to grips with the Obama record. Reagan isn't on the ballot, the lack of leadership of Obama and his results are. We saw Wednesday night what an incompetent empty suit he is and the record proves that his resume running for President was right.

peculiar rationale. you won't debate reagan because you strongly disagree with my perspective on obama and the realpolitik of the day?

Don't know about you but I would take a 1.7 trillion dollar debt today vs. the 5.4 trillion debt Obama generated. Feel free to apply the inflation to that 1.7 trillion debt and tell me what you come up with. What you fail to understand again is the difference between income taxes and use taxes. Further you seem to lack a basic understanding that 47% of income earners in this country couldn't care less about raising income taxes since they don't pay any.

Actual dollars comparison is immaterial and irrelevant. I am well aware of the difference between income taxes and use taxes. You'd gag at the total income tax rates I pay and the cap limit use taxes, I pay up here.

I see what you're saying. A sizeable chunk of the republican party doesn't care how much income taxes go up or down because they don't pay any. Who'd a thunk.

The unemployed / those who are unemployment is the formula.

Everyone else falls into a void in which they're not counted.

"Actively looking for work" are those on unemployment.

Pardon me for not believing much that you post because what you believe hasn't come true. Not sure how anyone can look at the results and claim progress has been made other than those who don't believe in a free enterprise capitalistic economy. It really is hard dealing with people like you who ignore actual data and still buy the liberal talking points. The economy isn't generating the jobs or economic growth to keep up with population growth but you still want to hang on to an ideology that is a failure.

Yeah because idiots just don't exist, because they have some sort of "defect" in your world - as if many are incapable of getting a degree and doing something with their lives.

I'm sure there is a percentage of people on social assitance of some sort that are fully capable of getting a degree and doing "something" with their lives. But you talk in sweeping generalizations like everyone is in that boat, when they are in the minority.

The only one being racist here is you for treating perfectly normal and intelligent people as if they're unable to succeed. They're only "dumb" in my mind because they're more than content with their government assistance.

You just did it again. You take a minority and extrapolate to all. No, the fact is half the world is below average intelligence and many who are above average are uneducated and/or ignorant.

Me - I totally understand given the fact I'm in a similar position (not on welfare, but close) despite the fact I have a degree.... Yeah I'm over qualified to flip burgers but don't have the experience or meet the racial criteria to get a job in a position I'm actually qualified in...

Oh? then why aren't you trying harder to make something of your life, as you admonish those only slight more unfortunate than yourself? Sounds like you are blaming rush's famous reverse racism (yuk yuk). You can have an excuse because you at least aren't on social assistance, but others can't becasue they are? And you claim to understand?

Do you have any idea how many times I have heard this line "I would hire you but we need to meet a quota." That means "I will would hire you but I cant because you're not minority."

Its also a totally easy way to say you ain't the one. Ever said to a girlfriend "its not you its me" or had a chick say that to you?

Jonsa;1060992995]Recessions always effect every citizen so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Sorry but this recession didn't affect me or my family at all, wonder why? The 81-82 recession effected everyone because we had less money due to high inflation, Reagan corrected that with his tax cuts. I agree though in what a good leader is and see no such qualities in Obama. Good leaders don't attack success, demonize individual wealth creation, and promote individual wealth redistribution. This country was built on self reliance and neighbor helping neighbor with the govt. not classified as a neighbor. Force social spending has created the debt we have today.

It is the responsibility of a leader to bring people together not divide them. Obama hasn't met with Congress in probably years now but he has time for the View. Obama hasn't met with his jobs' council since January but he has time for Leno, Obama hasn't met with our allies and has never visited Israel but that is ok since Israel really isn't a true ally are they?

peculiar rationale. you won't debate reagan because you strongly disagree with my perspective on obama and the realpolitik of the day?

No, I won't debate Reagan because it diverts from the Obama record and serves no purpose today

Actual dollars comparison is immaterial and irrelevant. I am well aware of the difference between income taxes and use taxes. You'd gag at the total income tax rates I pay and the cap limit use taxes, I pay up here.

LOL, you don't know me or what I make or pay in U.S. taxes in this country and I earned every dollar I made, in fact I did build it.

I see what you're saying. A sizeable chunk of the republican party doesn't care how much income taxes go up or down because they don't pay any. Who'd a thunk.

I anxiously await your proof that the majority of those not paying any FIT are Republicans. Thanks in advance

I'm sure there is a percentage of people on social assitance of some sort that are fully capable of getting a degree and doing "something" with their lives. But you talk in sweeping generalizations like everyone is in that boat, when they are in the minority.

You just did it again. You take a minority and extrapolate to all. No, the fact is half the world is below average intelligence and many who are above average are uneducated and/or ignorant.

Oh? then why aren't you trying harder to make something of your life, as you admonish those only slight more unfortunate than yourself? Sounds like you are blaming rush's famous reverse racism (yuk yuk). You can have an excuse because you at least aren't on social assistance, but others can't becasue they are? And you claim to understand?

Like Biden all I have to say to you is four words.

Come to Chicago and see...

Yes just like Biden...

Probably because it comes from the Treasury site. Keep making a fool of yourself believing CBO which you don't understand, the WH which is biased, and the censusu which has nothing to do with the bank account of the United States. You need to change your leaning to liberal because all I see from you is bull****.

The notion that welfare fraud and the progressives tolerance of it existing and the denial portrayed here is absolutely stunning.

So 3.75 billion people are idiots in your mind?? yet Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden and Barack Obama are top of the human race in intelligence?

Thanks for the gift... I suppose people will have to open the thread to see whats in it?

You're the racist not me.....

Sorry, I cant try harder to be a minority when I'm not... I suppose that never occurred to your light bulb.

Sorry, its me - it's not you....... Yeaaaaaa it is definately you.

The unemployed / those who are unemployment is the formula.

Everyone else falls into a void in which they're not counted.

"Actively looking for work" are those on unemployment.

It could also include those who say they are unemployed but are registered with their unemployment office job match service but who are not actually receiving a check. You do not have to be receiving a check to register a job search with them, at least not where I live. Some employers will use the office as their human resources first step so you have to apply through them even if you already have another job.
