KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian counterintelligence investigators have foiled a Russian plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top military and political figures, Ukraine’s state security service said Tuesday.

Two colonels in the State Guard of Ukraine, which protects top officials, were detained on suspicion of enacting the plan drawn up by Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, a statement said. The colonels were recruited before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to the statement.

It quoted the head of the State Security Service, Vasyl Maliuk, as saying the plot foresaw an attack before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration for a fifth term on Tuesday. Maliuk said that he personally oversaw the top-secret operation to track the plot.

Ukrainian claims of Russian efforts to kill Zelenskyy aren’t new. Zelensky said in 2022 there has been at least 10 attempts to assassinate him, and now the war with Russia has stretched into its third year.

Zelensky has mastered the art of staying away from windows and dodgy tea.

So they tried to blow him up in his car.

The plan was completely penetrated, so they arrested the people involved, and Zelensky is still around.

Suck it, Putin.

Putin, you motherfu****, how typically chickenshit of you!

Much respect for Zelenskyy, may he and his family stay safe and live in peace once the Putin killings are done. Putin needs to be stopped one way or another, this attack and invasion has gone on far too long. Strength and success for Ukraine, they are strong and patriotic, they deserve to live in freedom and peace.

Maybe Zelensky can return the favor and take out Putin?

Not much for detail in the article. How is it a Russian plot, given that the people named in this plot are two Ukrainian state guard colonels? It makes it sound like a military coup or something.

Nope. Turns out they've been on the FSB payroll for at least 6 months before the war.

Apparently you can't (most likely won't) read the OP....

It's probably a classic purge by Zelensky. What better way to clean his Ukrainian KGB than accuse his victims of working for Russia? It's actually only the latest in a long list of purges. Zelensky arrested the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on same charges. He banned the millenia old Church on same charges. All he has to do is accuse them of being Russian agents.

Occam disagrees. Your conspiracy theory is too complicated. Russia has made attempts to assassinate the President of Ukraine (among others … it’s a shit nation) in the past. It’s the simplest explanation.

All dictators, and dictator wannabes always justify their purges to tighten their grip on power by claiming assassins are after them. It's the oldest trick in the book. Do you deny the Zelensky regime threw the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church into the dungeons of the SBU? I suppose that old, ancient, feeble Metropolitan is also an assassin.

Yeah, so the biggest flaw in your conspiracy theory is assassins are after him and have been for two years. Maybe if the garbage nation of Russia with its shit people didn’t try to kill everyone all the goddamn time you would have a point.

Where does it say they were being paid for 6 months? It doesn't.

It's weird, dishonest even, how you won't deny in broad strokes Russia is a dictatorship that will do bad things like murder dissidents, but then go around and screen defense for Russia whenever it's accused of doing something unseemly.

Zelensky has a troubled relationship with the military. The offensive operations he’s ordered have been disastrous, he sacks his own generals if they don’t tell him otherwise, and conscription plans are deeply unpopular. The FSB is a convenient scapegoat but, even if true, that military officers can be so easily persuaded that he hast to go is still symptomatic of his failures as a leader and his tense relationship with the military.

Putin jails his political enemies and has people poisoned. What does that have to do with saying two Ukrainian colonels where on the Russian payroll for over 6 months?

Why on earth would that be even remotely hard to believe?

There was a link posted in the OP. You haven't provided any evidence to suggest its fake.
I question only hamish's statement that they were on the Russian payroll for over 6 months. A link to that specific info was requested.

So you don't have any issue with any of the rest of the story, but you find that element hard to believe?

The entire article has absolutely zero info. It has one sentence that says two colonels were plotting an assination. Nothing else. No names no info about how this "plot" was figured out. What was the plot? It is an extremely thin news article from Ukraine. From this Hamish fills in some info that is not in the article at all. I was hoping for some link to further flesh out this "plot". Are you not wanting to understand it better?

That's just not true.

Okay

It's almost like governments may not want to reveal all the details of their internal security apparatus.

It doesn't sound at all like you actually care about the details beyond just wanting to try to find reasons to discredit it, which again appears to be based on nothing more than you would prefer it to not be.
