U.S. Preparing New Sanctions On Iran Over Missile Tests

December 31, 2015

The Obama administration is preparing new U.S. sanctions on corporations and individuals connected with Iran's ballistic missile program, news media reported on December 30. U.S. officials have said the Treasury Department retains a right under July's nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers to blacklist entities suspected of involvement in Iran's missile development. Iran cheating? Gee, whoduathunkit?

This should surprise no one.

Yep, we've seen this before... Too bad Obama, and administration is just too damned stupid to see it.

Yeah too damned stupid, but so stupid to not have sanctions for violations... honestly some on the Anti-Obama rabid rant team flip out over some of the simplest crap... there were sanctions before, and apparently will be again... what would you do? Invade? Bomb over 40 known (who knows how many unknown) highly protected sites?

We can not and will not threaten Iran into submission, some of we have got to get over that and admit our past dealings with Iran- to include overthrowing their DEMOCRATICALLY elected government- has convinced the Iranians nothing short of a nuclear deterrent will keep the USofA out of Iran.

Now thanks to the BushII team we have made Iran FAR more powerful in the region, now quite capable of influencing Shia people in the region. They now can exert powerful influence across the oil rich region. We have only ourselves to blame for that.

I don't see how anyone can stop any nation from nukin' up with threats is like threatening a homeowner so he WON'T go and buy a weapon to defend his home...

Some more hawkish types can be just too damned stupid to see that real simple fact... threats only work if you can back them up... does the rest of the world back this new round of sanctions?

The overthrow of Mossadeq was a counter-coup, Mossadeq had already overthrown the parliament and declared himself dictator, and the Mullahs now controlling Iran supported his ouster and he is banned from their history books.

Italy Eyes Closer Relations With Post-Sanctions Iran

Italian-Iranian relations are a case in point. From Rome’s perspective, the JCPOA opened the door for many Italian firms to tap into the Iranian market. Tehran officials have long seen Italy as one of Iran’s closest partners in the West. Undoubtedly, the level of trust between Iran and Italy is higher than between Tehran and most Western nations.

Iran's president due in Italy, France in January 2016

Italian-Iranian relations have always endured even during sanctions:

In 2005, Italy was the third largest trading partner of Iran with 7.5% of all exports to Iran. Italy was the top trading partner of Iran in the European Union in early 2006.

Italy has maintained active diplomatic channels with Tehran even in periods of heightened tensions between European Union and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Despite the severity of international sanctions that substantially reduced prospects of trade with Iran, Italian officials retained communication with Iranian counterparts on soft political issues, albeit just at low-level exchanges during the President Ahmadinejad.

After the interim nuclear deal was agreed in 2013, Italy’s Emma Bonino became the first European foreign minister to visit Tehran since the tenure of President Khatami. In both her capacity as Italian foreign minister and later EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini strongly backed the nuclear negotiations. She also reiterated that a breakthrough in the talks could lead to a new chapter for Iran and the West going beyond non-proliferation issues.

In 2015, during an interview with RAI, President Rouhani said that Italy was the first trade partner among European Union states for several years before the international sanctions and that Iran regards Italy as the most important country for trade and economic cooperation.

Italy officially considers the MKO, an Iranian opposition movement in exile that advocates the overthrow of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a terrorist organization.

The MKO, or MEK, has advocated the removal of the Iranian regime, and has even cooperated with Israel in regards to the Iranian threat in the region.

Why the Pope Partners With Iran

The Holy See’s ties with Russia are stronger than ever and Rome and Tehran’s 30 years of quiet engagement has deepened over the last two years to the point that Vatican experts refer to a “Shiite option” when discussing papal diplomacy.

The American bishops, consulting the Vatican throughout, were most influenced by the fact that both Supreme Leaders Ruhollah Khomenei and Ali Khamenei had issued fatwas against the use of nuclear and chemical weapons. When Francis praised the eventual U.S.–Iranian deal at the United Nations in September, he spoke of the “sincerity, patience, and constancy” that led to its achievement. In the United States, Catholic entities lobbied Congress to approve the deal, encouraged by Rome to do so. More recently, the Vatican lobbied for Iran’s inclusion in the second round of peace talk on Syria in Vienna.

The scary part about this, is what else is Obama going to concede to the Iranians just so he (Obama) call tell his apathetic and ignorant supporters that there is still a workable agreement in place!?!

Yeah, like we're going to have any luck getting the tooth paste back in the tube now. Of course, we can always send in John Kerry. He did so well the first time around. He'll get those Mullets to knuckle under.

As I've said before concerning this Iran nuclear reduction deal, work with Iran until THEY violate the agreement. Let Iran make the first slip-up and then America is 100% justified in dropping out of the deal and keeping our money. See how simple that was? A snake will always be a snake. You just have to either pull up enough rocks, logs and other rubbish before it reveals itself or wait until it tries to strike. Then you chop off its head! And seeing that we haven't paid Iran one penny since the agreement was "settled", I'd say we haven't lost a damn thing.

Greetings, Objective Voice. :2wave:

I was under the impression that it was their money that was put under sanction by the international community, and they made it a condition that it would be released the minute the deal was signed, if I am remembering correctly. It may have been released by now, but I haven't heard so I don't know. Their neighbors don't trust them, and they know how they operate better than we do, so why we should trust anything they say is anybody's guess.

Hey, polgara :2wave:

You are correct. It is Iran's money that is being withheld through sanctions. And per the agreement, none gets released until they comply fully with the agreement. Since this (ballistic) missile test violates that agreement, current sanctions will remain in place and new ones just might be initiated.

You trust in order to foster better foreign relations. You trust to open the door to commerce and tourism. You trust in order to give peace a chance. If we didn't trust, Germany, Japan and Italy would still be our enemies, we'd still be in a cold war with Russia and Israel would be under a more constant threat from Arab countries without trusting a peace accord with Egypt.

You trust because it leads to better outcomes than war.

But when that trust is broken, somebody's got to pay the price.

 What's pathetic is that right wingers are too damned clueless to see it--that fact that the O administration knows damn well that Iran will cheat on all the terms of the nuclear accord, but is merely telling the public that Iran will comply w/the agreement just to get gullible people to back him.

The knowledgeable segment knows that O lied when he said that "Iran will comply", but they also know that sanctions don't make any difference to the Iranian regime's military ambitions, considering that Iran developed its nuclear program mostly during a time when sanctions were in place.

The only real effect of sanctions is making the lives of Iranian civilians miserable, and compromising the free market by banning voluntary transactions (sales/purchases) between individuals/businesses in the US and those in Iran.

Maybe we need to make the Iranian people even more miserable so they might be willing to rise-up and revolt? I keep hearing this line of BS that the vast majority of Iranians are moderate, but yet they sit on their hands and allow themselves to be ruled by hard-liners, and allow them to determine their future. This is the kind of policy when your Top/A-1 adviser is Iranian.

Apparently you are on the pro-Obama rabid rant team. Your attempts to excuse his appeasement of the jihadists who rule Iran are desperate and unconvincing. B. Hussein Obama is an un-American Marxist liar who does not have the best interests of this country at heart.

what would you do? Invade?

What responsible public figure has ever called for an invasion of Iran by ground troops? None that I have ever heard. But it is useful in building a straw man the person suggesting it can then deride as ridiculous.

We can not and will not threaten Iran into submission, some of we have got to get over that

So you assert, without any explanation. The U.S. sure as hell threatened the Soviet Union into submission over Cuba in October, 1962--and that was a nation with about three thousand nuclear weapons and a military many times the size and strength of Iran's.

and admit our past dealings with Iran- to include overthrowing their DEMOCRATICALLY elected government

That was predictable. It is a staple of anti-American leftist propaganda that the 1953 coup to oust the unstable, pro-communist Mohammed Mossadegh led inexorably to Ruhollah Khomeini and his successors, the Islamist murderers who now hold power in Tehran.

has convinced the Iranians nothing short of a nuclear deterrent will keep the USofA out of Iran.

Next you'll be telling us that the U.S. aggression on the Korean Peninsula in 1950-1953 convinced Kim Jong Un that nothing short of a nuclear deterrent would keep the evil Yankees out of North Korea.

I don't see how anyone can stop any nation from nukin' up with threats . . . Some more hawkish types can be just too damned stupid to see that real simple fact... threats only work if you can back them up

Of course I would never claim to have your preternatural intelligence. But threats certainly DO work when the nation making them is both able and willing to back them up with force. Your mention of forty or more sites that would need to be destroyed is silly. Several studies have been done which show that destroying the five main facilities in Iran's nuclear weapons program would neutralize it. Those sites are the underground centrifuge galleries at Natanz and Fordo; the heavy water/future plutonium production facility at Arak; the uranium conversion facility at Isfahan; and the nuclear power station at Bushehr.

A fraction of the U.S. air forces could destroy all these facilities in a single strike, probably by using no more than several dozen very large conventional bombs. For example, the U.S. documented the cut-and-cover construction of the two very large underground galleries at Natanz through satellite photos, and it knows very well how much concrete and earth bombs would need to penetrate to destroy the centrifuges inside them. In fact the U.S. 30,000-lb. bomb may have been designed with just that job in mind, and one or two of them placed on each of the galleries would surely get through the cover and blow up the machinery. The plant at Arak is even more vulnerable, because the vital parts of it are above ground. One study estimated that as few as four 2,000-lb. guided bombs directed at those vital points would make the facility useless.

The Iranian people are less likely to rise up against their leaders if their lives are miserable at the hands of US sanctions.

Eh, if it REALLY were that much of a threat we'd just nuke them into the stone age. Whatever, just slap the sanctions back on. Who cares?

The overthrow of Mossadeq was a counter-coup, Mossadeq had already overthrown the parliament and declared himself dictator, and the Mullahs now controlling Iran supported his ouster and he is banned from their history books.

A rather self-serving rewrite of history. The CIA fomented months of unrest both internally and externally.

The Mullahs were opposed to ANYONE wanting to separate Church and Government- they hated the Shah even more.

There is nowhere in the US Constitution where it says, "police the world".

OHHHHhhhhhh, so they would cut-off their own noses to spite their faces. That makes PERFECT sense!!!!!

No see what I wrote are called facts, are you denying that Mossadeq dissolved parliament through an illegal fraudulent referendum where he got a 99.9% vote in his favor then proceeded to grant himself indefinite dictatorial powers? If so then you need to read a book from someone others than Chomsky.

A link would be nice right about now...

I read quite a bit, but never what you claim... so the CIA was in place and ready to crank up it's coup support in a couple of months? We had no problem with Iran until Mossadegh 'seized' power?

Many dictators seize power- why did we care about Iran? Why did we install a Shah instead of new DEMOCRATIC elections? Why did we never push the Shah for true elections? Why did we help his Secret Police suppress opposition?

The BEST you can claim is we substituted one dictator for another- not very noble of us at all...

But do link the referendum vote, a time table of how it came about would be nice... :peace

the US should exit from Middle Eastern affairs except for food and medical aid when possible. the region has to fix itself.

If sanctions could actually encourage the Iranian people to rise up, they would've done so by now. But it hasn't happened, in spite of 40 years of sanctions on Iran.

So you're argument is that if something doesn't work, keep doing it?
