I know numerous people who are on the receiving end of New York State’s very generous benefit program. It is easy to qualify and get stuff from NYS if your income is low enough.
I understand that the overwhelming majority of recipients of NYS benefits have needs and are struggling. But, there are more and more individuals that are not struggling, applying for and getting many kinds of benefits. Shame on them? Maybe? They qualify, they paid taxes most of their life and what they are saying is, I’ve been paying for other people’s benefits, and it’s about time I get mine. In addition to that, all you need is identification and a rent receipt from a non-family member to establish your residency in NY and collect benefits. There is no waiting period for new residents.
In New York State, the SNAP Program (formerly food stamps) now allows you to have more money in a checking or savings account, or even a retirement account, without affecting your eligibility for SNAP benefits. As of January 1, 2008, most households applying for SNAP benefits no longer have to pass a savings/resource test in order to get SNAP benefits. This means having money in a savings, checking or retirement account, or having other resources, will not keep you from being eligible for SNAP benefits, as long as you meet the income guidelines.
I decided to go online and start an application process designed to help determine if Dick and Jane (both 60 years old) were eligible for benefits.
The total value of their estate is about $500,000 (home, cars and 401k’s).
I reported 100,000 in Dick and Jane’s individual 401k’s. They each own (paid for) 25,000 cars. There home is worth about 250,000. They have $5,000 in their checking/bank accounts, but I believe they can have much more based on the statement above. They both work part time earning 12,000 a year each, and have no other sources of income.
They each pay 50.00 a month for medical bills, and a total of 1,000 a month for housing expenses (includes taxes).
Yes, they are entitled to benefits. Food Stamps, Weatherization Assistance and Home Energy Assistance
