Japan urged to ban manga child abuse images | World news | The Guardian

Japan must ban sexually abusive images of children in manga comics, despite claims that such a move would threaten freedom of expression, the UN’s special envoy on child protection has said. Maud de Boer-Buquicchio praised Japan for passing a law last year that banned the possession of abusive images of children, but said it contained loopholes that allowed exploitation to continue. “When it comes to particular, extreme child pornographic content, manga should be banned,” De Boer-Buquicchio said at the end of a week-long visit to Japan.

Good luck with that happening...

Coming from an American mindset... I don't think that should be done... they are just drawings/cartoons... I don't support censorship even if it's disgusting...

the UN should stop...

Not sure we should click on this thread.

That would make many Americans very very sad.

They're just drawings, I'd rather have people fulfill their urges with this stuff rather then act on it in the real world.

A fictional creation of ink on paper cannot be harmed or exploited.

Where there is no victim, there should be no crime.

There is nothing illegal or even questionable in this thread (or the OP link)

I wasn't sure what manga child abuse was so, I peeked at some links. Wish I hadn't.

Fair point, I probably will not follow you on those links. Just saying the pictures in the article do not quite illustrate what I think the UN is really talking about here, and even though I may feel otherwise personally I doubt Japan will comply with this UN request.

Also, how do you stop artists from producing drawings and distributing them?

People can't really control their urges to look at stuff like this..

I'm not sure that really helps any argument. I also don't believe that's true.

However from a freedom of expression / freedom of choice perspective, even bad or prurient art has its place in the entertainment market.

Since no one is harmed in the production of "lolicon" there is no rational basis to ban it.

I believe it's true

Same way you stop people from producing and distributing child porn....bust them.

[I'm referring to the artwork that would be considered illegal]

Why do you think we can ban drawings? Literally anyone with a pencil and a tiny bit of skill can draw this stuff.

Good luck with this pointless goal of banning free speech/expression

If it borders on criminal intent [causing arousal in pedophiles] then it falls under international law. Otherwise, draw away.

Oh so NOW international law means ****?

No one can take you seriously if you take the UN seriously.

If we as a country didn't comply with and enforce those laws, I wouldn't give a crap what UN said.

I'm sort of against the whole One World theory as a whole.

Its not child porn. Thats the thing. Try again

I'd ask to see an example of what we're discussing here but, I don't want those images on my PC. I'll just assume they're child porn.

Otherwise, what's the BFD?
