And it will be 5 miles past nowhere in the middle of East Texas.

I haven't owned a home since my last one burned down in the late 70's. Never wanted home ownership again. But all that changed with Hurricane Ike. When it came through Houston a few years ago, we were inside the eye wall for 9 hours. My wife, who is disabled and suffers from schizophrenia, hasn't been the same since. She freaks out every time there is a thunderstorm. So, for her, I decided that we are going to get away from Houston and the Gulf coast altogether. 2 weeks ago, I found a nice home a few miles outside of Woodville, Texas, and after some negotiations back and forth, I will be signing a contract this coming week. The closing should be about 6-8 more weeks from then. I will be going offline for a couple of weeks to do the move and get situated, and when I get back here, it will no longer be from Houston. It will be just like the song our bandleader wrote, 5 Miles Past Nowhere, where there are no more hurricanes... Well, at least not the worst part of them. LOL. My wife is happy, since she grew up in the country. I grew up in Flint and Detroit Michigan, and spent the last 40 years in Houston, but I think I can get used to this. :)

But I won't be retiring any time soon. Worked a deal with my boss at work. Since I can control the work computer completely from home, I will be telecommuting, and actually going into the office just once a week. As for the music, I will still be doing that, although getting to the gigs in Galveston will be a pain in the ass. To me, retiring is to sit around, waiting to die, and I have no intention of doing that. When they finally plant my sorry ass in the ground, that will be the day I retire, and may it be many, many years from now. LOL.

I see some culture shock in your future.

Good luck.

I like your positive spirit. Good luck to you Dan! :2wave:

Your relocation makes me wonder how many other people are relocating because of intense weather.

You can get used to this. And who knows--maybe you'll find new musical opportunities too. But even if you don't, just think--I'm going to get crazy here, so steel yourself--about leaving your vehicles unlocked. Overnight, yes.

And this:

Retiring just means not working for a living. One can still do plenty.

I won't be that bad. I have played in small Texas towns for decades, and have made friends in every one of them. I think the main thing that will hinder my sleeping will be the absence of police sirens at night. LOL.

Actually, because of where I will be, it will be a much larger area to do pickup gigs in. As far south as Houston-Galveston, as far west as Navasota, as far North as Waco and Lufkin, and as far east as Western Louisiana. And, despite being a jazz and rock player, I can play country too. Was in a country band for almost 10 years. I can play the crap out of some Willie. :)

Houston doesnt have any culture (apart from stabbings) so I think he'll be fine

Naw, Houston is pretty cool. My wife just doesn't like the weather. LOL.

22,000 PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE COUNTY..........

I guess you've never heard of the Friends of Music or of the Bach Society at Christ Our King Lutheran or the Shepherd School of Music or Celeste Walker or...well, I could go on, but I won't. :3oops:

I played bass for a while at the Second Church of Christ here in Houston.

My best friend's funeral was held there. Which is why I know that Beth Moore, now famed Bible study leader, is from there. She taught an aerobics class to the older ladies at Second Baptist, and my BFF's sweet and elderly mom told me that that plumber's wife was just darling, bwahahaha!

Yeah because no one in small towns plays classical music...

Congratulations. I truly hope your wife is at peace in her new home. God bless your family.

Ain't no finer way to live, than to live in a Small Texas Town.

Good luck. I hope you have good neighbors, and they're a substantial distance from you. A little elbow room is a good thing.

Yeah because no one in small towns plays classical music...

Nice attempted deflection, but I said nothing about small towns at all, much less that folks in small towns don't play classical music. That’s because I know that they do, and I don’t mean records; I mean folks who play the violone, viola de gamba, and harpsichord.

My post was in reply to your snotty "Houston doesnt have any culture (apart from stabbings)," and my purpose was to demonstrate that whether you're aware of this or not, the city does "have culture."

It's one of the biggest cities in the US of course it has some cultured people, but it is a city where the well off are abandoning it in droves and it has become much more violent. It hasn't been a place people have wanted to go in Texas for a long time.

That too has nothing to do with whether the city lacks "culture," which was your original claim.
