House OKs $787B stimulus bill with GOP opposition

I agree with you that some people are wrong for showing outrage over this spending yet didn't carewhen Bush was doing it. Hell dumbass Republicans were trying to tell us that the economy was doing just fine until they couldn't lie any longer because everyone saw it.

But all spending should be carefully looked at whether it is going for foreign or domestic.

This bill with its extra addons was passed too quickly.

For instance, what are the exact ramifications of taking an extra week to look at this bill? Obama is acting like if it took an extra day the fall of the U.S. would happen.

I would rather spending be going on for the U.S. rather than Iraq or Afghanistan, but given that the majority voted to boot out the Bush style wreckless spending, it doesn't make wreckless spending ok if it is done at home anymore than if it was done for foreign interests.

I'm convinced our government is schizophrenic.

So in general if you read an 1100 page bill, and small parts of it is changed, and which parts changed is mentioned in a side document(normal routine), then you go ahead and re-read the whole 1100 pages, instead of reading the parts that has changed or the chapters those parts belong to?

any notes mentioned about what changed are not legally binding. they could omit leaving notes about what changed but the changes would still become law.

The normal routine is to sneak things into bills that have nothing to do with the stated purpose for the bill.

At least you are not a hypocrite, and I thank you for that. I remember you being against the Bush transfer of wealth too. Republicans voted for that. I think, in their minds, the difference between the 2 so-called stimulus packages, is that one was pushed by a president with a D after his name, and that is enough for them to oppose it.

To be fair, many of the Republicans of the last Congress were against that bailout. Want to find out how to separate Conservatives from the RINO's? See which ones supported Bush's plan. Those are the RINO's. Those who were against Bush's plan and also against Obama's plan are the real Conservatives.

Both plans, Bush's and Obama's, are merely Socialist transfers of money from some citizens to other citizens. That's all they are.

people sneak their pet projects into bills all the time. This is a new bill and needs to be treated as such

mental note to never trust Indy to of read the fine print of legal contracts.

Anytime you put your signature on a legally binding document, you should read it line by line, word for word. Anyone who doesn't, is an idiot, regardless of party affiliation.

Come on, be fair.. A personal attack doesn't replace the lack of an actual response.
Looky here, MZ finally shows his real colors with a new avatar.

This is why those in office should read every word of the bill before voting on it bill. I also think who every authors the bills or amendments should read them outloud and explain in full detail in layman's terms why they need this.

Make Congress Read Their Bills Before Voting

This is ridiculous a single person can not possibly read most legislation or for that matter do all the research required to understand a single bill. That's why they have aides who help them with such matters. Specially when a bill is over 2-300 pages long.

They still end up not reading most of most bills that go through congress. This one I would have hoped they give more time for.

The sheer amount of bills passed each year and their size precludes that. Gov't is way too centralised and way too big.

Republicans did good in this.

They almost universally opposed what is widely seen as little more then a Pork Bill being portrayed as a "stimulus".

While much of the media has been hyping it as the OBAMA Plan, Or Obama's big win, etc.

In less then a month the Republicans turned the tables on the messiah and now have him in a corner. Hopefully they will keep it up and block/impede as many of his policies as possible.

What is the difference between pork and stimulus?

Hit the play button.

And tell me. can you read 1100 pages in less than what 12 hours?

Can you read 1100 pages in 12 hours?
Some can.

But can you read 110 pages and think through the ramifications of all the blarney inserted? No.

It's when the government inserts itself into areas it has no business. The Constitution can be used as the floor from which to measure... and...

... by any measure it's pork.
Republican... Democrat... Martian.

The private sector is stimulated by the reduction in government intervention.

The only thing this is stimulating is the Democrat party.

Amazing that you give tax cuts when you have government federal deficits.. That will just be counterproductive. Those taxes WILL have to be payed eventually, and when they do have to be payed an even worse economic crisis will start.. The hangover of the overspending time, which we just keep postponing.
Tax reductions increases government revenue because it stimulates the private sector.

Tax cuts...Creates jobs... Increasing employment... Increasing salaries. Increasing government revenues.

Always has.
JFK (R-MA) knew this cold and espoused it.

The trick is to cut government spending... or at least freeze it for several years.

And by definition... a cut... is when the spending increase isn't met. That's how they measure a "cut" in Washington.

So, you would rather thieve wealth from the private sector, run it through government, and build debt?

Makes no sense.

If a market segment fails, there is a huge amount of economic activity to make it a wash in the big picture. If government fails, as it did with Freddie and Fannie... everyone gets screwed.

The hangover comes from trying to "help" people. When government want to "help" in reality the end up "screwing".

Limited government makes limited problems.

That wasn't helpful.

the economic patriot act. Nobody reads it, but they pass it anyway because they are told that bad things will happen if they don't.
Except, in this case, the bill was passed on completeky partisan lines.

The PA was one of the most bi-partisan bills ever.
