imo, The civil war in Syria has the potential to turn into a regional and possible world conflict.
While preliminary indications are gas was used. What has not been determined is who used the gas.
One should ask yourself, If the US does a unilateral strike against Syria, will the people of Syria and the world respect us or hate us? If the US does not strike Syria, but takes the case against the Syrian govt to the UN, will the people of Syria and the world respect us or hate us.
President Obama can easily backtrack by stating he wants to see the UN investigation report and wants a definitive report that shows who did the gas attack. Then he will take the case to the world on what should be done. Going alone is not in the US best interest at this time.
