Both Clinton and Trump hate Democratic Socialism. I'm not a fan either (the only effective form of Socialism is Libertarian, imo), but it would certainly upset their aspirations of erecting a nationalist oligarchy.

Trump would prefer an oligarchy anyway, so he has other oligarchs with which to compete on "equal" terms. He just wants to be the big boss of bosses.

Will Trump pay a political price now that he has backed out after multiple organizations offered to donate millions to charities in order to make this debate happen?
 
he just killed it today and unless something drastically changes this isn't going to happen.
his advisers probably stepped in and said debate him possibly gives more fuel to Clinton
to use.

probably not a good idea to focus on him rather than Clinton.
of course that didn't stop trump of skewering Clinton and wasserman
for rigging the DNC election in Clintons favor.

he didn't promise anything. he said that if he debated he wanted the proceeds to go to charity.
there is no political price to pay if he doesn't debate.

First Trump said he would debate Sanders...

Then he said not unless 10 million could be raised/ donated to charity. [ Richie Hecker volunteered to offer the $10 million the GOP nominee had wanted to be donated to charity as a condition of debating Sanders - and then another 20 million as offered by boxing promoter....30 MILLION!]

Now he's *squawk squawk* cheeeeekkkkennnnin' out:

Clinton and Trump are such cowards. Maybe the media will finally wake up and realize how mortally terrified the frontrunners are of a guy who 'supposedly' can't win.
Maybe not the election, but in a way, Bernie Sanders is totally ****ing their **** up...

The fact that his language was strong enough to prompt multiple articles and interviews about this question makes it pretty clear that Trump's language was not so vague as you believe.

But of course this was always an instance of a bully being a bully. Much like jock who teases the school nerd into believing that they will hang out soon, Trump backed out like the petulant bully of a kid that he is.

Trump's not in this to beat Sanders, so what's his next move? Carry on with the campaign? The Republican candidate can't be someone who caves to peer pressure, but that won't stop an old battleaxe like HRC from pounding her fists and shaking her locks. So is this just a bull roar fest now? Kinda boring, if you ask me. Maybe it would align the RNC to debate as few DNC nominees as possible.
