Cat person or dog person ?

I like both cats and dogs. I am currently petless, after the last two passed away just recently, and I just don't have the heart to replace them at the moment. Cat was 18 when he passed.

All my last bunch of animals were unexpected rescue animals. One had been a stray for 3 years when it had gotten tossed out of the house by the heirs of a woman who died. The others were because of people I know that became homeless and couldn't keep their pets.

That is so sad. It took me a while to get another cat after my best friend died. All of my little friends are also from shelters or people who need to give them up for whatever reason. Hopefully, you will find another great little friend someday soon, when the time is right.

I use both. I like both for different reasons. For me they are working animals first and companions second. They have to fill the niche they are there for. Cats for pest control mainly small rodents. Dogs for larger pests and intruder deterrence and first contact and alert.

how many cats do you have ?:2razz:

only 1 at a time. ( I've had many over my lifetime)
I teach them to walk on a leash since i'm in the city. They should not be left to roam at night either, not even in rural areas.

I find dog a bit bland to be honest. Cat can get stringy if you don’t prepare it right but it goes well in a curry. :2razz:

whichever you prefer, the best come from shelters. They need a home. I've never bought from a pet store in my life
Spay and neuter your pets and be part of population control, and it's better for the pet too :)

Then how are they supposed to mouse? Cats in a rural area, prime purpose is mousing and pest control. Farmers and ranchers don't just keep em around for pets. Night is when they do their mousing.

I am a cat-person by nature, but I have always been grateful for my dogs. They're working animals and a rural family's best protection. My Aussie died on September 15th, and I am heartbroken still but beginning to look at the humane society's webpage.

What I've never understood is that people who don't like dogs just don't like them but that people who don't like cats just HATE them.

I have a man-cat whose half-feral. Fifteen pounds of muscle, and he hunts rabbits and rats. He's on the job, and he loves me. He knows how to turn on the "commercial affection" too, but he's a wonderful, passionate guy who's a great "kisser." He was my doggie's BFF, and when she was dying, he lay beside her and groomed her face.

And I have a beautiful older lady-cat. She was damaged by anesthesia--had a couple of strokes--and now is, well, "special." She's very paranoid and jumpy and won't ever have anything to do with a dog or another cat. But if you give her a chance, she will talk your head off.

barn cats -sure. I was thinking about coyotes, they're now in the cities too.
But more specifically house cats as pets need to stay in at night.

Only way I will own a cat is if it is a mouser and I have a place that needs it. Great for pests. Only thing better is an owl that lives with your land. And the owl is cooler anyway.

Coyotes are easy to solve if done right. You can't just shoot them because they can sustain a 75% loss in population and still replenish that loss. Combo trapping, shooting, and scaring works. Maybe a nice big scary dog.

I agree about owls, but they come with legal problems. Cant trim the tree an owl lives in if your neighbors know of it.

Nice thing about the boondocks is you don't have to trim trees. :)

Yep, as long as the trees weren't messing with our house or any other outbuilding, we left them alone. Well, except for dangerous dead limbs that could fall. My dad would cut those down, of course. Otherwise, nature did its thing so we could have shade to play and eat under.

A big scary dog solves lots of problems. Meter-readers and potential boogeymen won't even get out of their trucks, and I like that. What's funny is that both my previous dogs, 90-pounders each, were really lovable goobers who looked scary. It was my female Aussie I had to restrain when the UPS guy made a delivery. Before we rescued her, she'd been used to train pit bulls, and she didn't play. Very satisfactory scare factor.

Yeah, my Grandma had a chicken farm and she kept a cat to keep the mice from taking over the barn. My brother asked if he could bring it indoors so he could pet it and play with it, she said he'd be lucky to come back with his hand and that it wasn't a pet, but a working farm animal.

All of my family that still lives out in the country have strict rules on animals in the house. Generally, it isn't allowed at all. The animals live outside, and the people inside. Of course, they all have barns, garages, sheds. and other places for the animals to go to be warm and dry, but yeah, no animals in the house unless something is going on.

I love both but dogs more. We always had female black labs in our family but I love most dogs, especially puppies. I really like cats too. You're probably going to want to take my man card away, but one of my favorite shows is called "Too Cute", and it's all about baby animals like puppies, kittens, ducklings...I swear if you've never seen it you'll love it and if you don't then you're probably dead inside. :)

We have dog doors to the garage and into to the home from there, and the cats have learned to use them. The cats and dogs are used to people and sometimes think they should be people, which for the most part I don't disabuse unless they don't pull their weight or they get pushy.

For me, dogs are like children, totally dependent upon you for love and attention and can be all consuming and totally life fulfilling if you find the right match of temperament and activity needs. They're also, for those reasons, totally heartbreaking to lose when their lives end.

Cats, however, are more like grandchildren, nice to visit or to experience for short periods.

All animals, however, are wonderful in their own unique and special ways. Was I to start life over again, I'd love to be able to build a career and a livelihood that involved animals in some way.
