As Israel votes, Netanyahu takes swipe at Arabs

JERUSALEM (AP) — With his political future in question, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday made a last-ditch appeal to hard-liners as the country went to the polls in a tight parliamentary election, saying that high Arab voter turnout was endangering his right-wing party's dominance.

Opinion polls had shown a close race heading into the vote, with Netanyahu's opponents, led by Isaac Herzog of the centrist Zionist Union, in a slight lead. The last available poll was published Friday, when a significant number of voters were still undecided, meaning the race was still too close to call.

But amid signs that his six-year reign could be in jeopardy, Netanyahu has veered sharply to the right in the closing days of the campaign, making a series of statements aimed at shoring up his hard-line, nationalist base.

On Tuesday, he reiterated a pledge to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state — backtracking from six years of his own policy and putting him at odds with the United States and other Western allies.

At midday, Netanyahu claimed high Arab voter turnout was putting his right-wing Likud Party's rule "in danger," according to a posting on his Facebook page. "Arab voters are going to the polls in droves. Left-wing organizations are bringing them in buses," he said.

He also called on supporters to vote for him to "narrow the gap" between Likud and the Zionist Union. "With your help, and with the help of God, we will build a nationalist government that will protect the state of Israel," he said.

Clearly Arab Israelis are lesser Israelis. Or as Netanyahu has called them in the past, a 'ticking time bomb'.

People say that a high latino turnout favors the democrats all the time, is that racist also?

Maybe if he wasn't such a piece of **** toward Arab Israelis, he wouldn't have to worry about them voting against him.

His comment doesn't seem inherently racist (unless I'm missing some context), but I suspect people are interpreting it as racist in light of his general anti-Arab/anti-Muslim attitude.

The election results will not change a thing regarding the Palestine-Israeli issue. It's funny somehow that calling Bibi a racist is the narrative though.

Utter nonsense considering that the united Arab party is intending on supporting an Herzog coalition, hence it's only natural for Netanyahu to present a bigger Arab party as a bigger threat to the possibility of a Likud led coalition.

Well Bibi has made it clear he doesn't support a two state solution while the Zionist Union party does.

For real?

Arab Israelis are in their absolute majority, naturally voting for the Arab parties that represent their needs as a minority within the state.
They wouldn't vote for a party such as the Likud (or any non-Arab party) regardless of Netanyahu's actions as a PM.

I fail to see racism.

I see plenty of intolerance to go around, namely from the op, but I see no racism

Netanyahu is done. This was a huuuge political miscalculation of his to call for an election. I think most Israelis don't give a damn about Iran, and are more worried about domestic issues, which is something (that I've read) Netanyahu has absolutely failed to deliver.

Even if a Likud-lead government forms, I severely doubt he'll be in it. His "full on racism" is a last-ditch ploy to try to woo the nationalistic righties into Lukid, and I just don't see it working.

I ask what do you know about Israeli domestic politics? He IS in an election that Obama has tried to mess with, and the gloves are off.

Considering you live in a country where the president committed virtual fraud to get re-elected, lied about the security of the nation regarding Iraq and has been waring more with Republicans than terrorists [who need jobs, by the way] criticizing Netanyahu is kind of churlish. I mean you elected a lying coward and a scoundrel, Netanyahu is a well respected world leader, decorated soldier, and honest man.

Do you base that on the fact that Arabs have tried to wipe Israel off the map in 1947, 1967, and 1973 and Israel has had to war against the PLO and other terrorist groups for two decades a least?

Or do you base it on Obama's idea that Arab terrorists only need jobs and there will be world peace?

I mean, it IS ALL Israel's fault here right....?

And this is why the far right wants to control the arab population in Israel be them Israeli arab citizens or not. They know if more arabs are granted citizenship, the far right will be nothing. They know if more Arabs gain voting rights in Israel, the far right and ultra zionists will loose many of their seats and power.

That's the way I read it, as well. How has turnout been where you are?

Quite oddly enough the turnout is pretty similar to that of the 2013 elections.
One would expect that since the race is actually a close one this time the turnout would have been much higher.

That's a very interesting development. It will be fascinating to see the composition of the vote. That might make all the difference when it comes to the outcomes, especially in terms of who might have the first shot at forming the next government.

Yeah I guess what it all comes down to is whether Herzog wins by a mile or not, because even if he wins by 3-4 points Netanyahu will still have a bigger chance to form a coalition. It's going to be interesting that's for certain.

Scare tactics as a weapon of politicians is as old as the proverbial hills. Consider one of America's favorite patriots - the famous Patrick Henry - who in the debate about the Constitution warned the Virginia Federal Convention of 1788 what would happen if the Constitution became the law of the land............

"They'll take your niggers from you".... he warned the delegates.

So Bibi using scare tactics is nothing new.

Yeah, that's the key. Like any intelligent group of people, they vote for the parities that represent their needs. Netanyahu doesn't give a **** about their needs. In fact, he's actively aggressive in going against their needs. Thus, he has to worry about them.

Netanyahu basically says that brown-skinned non-Jews are a threat to Israel (even if they are Israeli citizens). I'd call that full on racism. Certainly it's fear-mongering targeting a specific and significant portion of Israel's population.

Why is this okay for the right-wing? Or is that a rhetorical question...

I wonder why pro-Israeli people always start their history at 1947, AFTER the soon-to-be Israelis stole land from its original inhabitants like the entitled brats that politicians like Netanyahu continue to be today?

Non-Jewish Israelis are a threat to Israel, being Israel exists specifically to be a safe haven refuge country for Jews anywhere in the world. If Israel isn't decisively Jewish, Israel has ceases to exist.

Right off the bat you attack...assuming I am "pro-Israeli"

You are hardly unbiased on he subject, with "stole land", and show unmitigated ignorance of the history

Have a good day

Yea, its very difficult to see Harzog forming a coalition unless there will be surprises.
In the past two days it seems that Netanyahu is closing the gap but still you cant relay on anything in the media at these days.

Hatred of Jews has existed for many, many centuries - often genocidal - and it continues. You will find no fury and raging at Arab countries that horrifically persecute non-Muslims and non-Arabs. Only incessant and furious hatred of Jews.
