The root lesson of this election is that Fox has screwed up the right so badly that they can no longer elect a president. Fox has given the conservative base a ludicrously distorted idea of what is going on in the world. Their view of things is now riddled with conspiracy theories, ludicrously false factoids, overwhelming threats to our safety behind every rock, visions of the imminent collapse of the country, etc. So, their viewers are demanding a nominee that will fight heroically against those behind the conspiracies and collapse of the country and whatnot. The problem is, of course, none of those things are real. So, the only nominees the base on the right will support are literally crazy people or intensely ignorant people. Trump, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, etc. Or flat out hatemongers like Santorum. But, of course, the majority of the nation would never vote for somebody like that, so the candidates the base are pushing for in the primary can't possibly win in the general. On the flip side you have the bloc of Republicans who have not bought into the Fox world. They are pushing for candidates that are at least sane and informed and therefore at least have some chance in the general. But, those candidates can't count on a decent turnout from their Fox nut base, so they end up not being able to win a general either... It's quite a pickle Fox has created. They've painted themselves into a corner. You can bet your bottom dollar that there are some key people over at Fox pacing around conference rooms slowly realizing what they did and frantically trying to figure out how to undo it in time for the election, but of course it's too late. It took they years to build up this army of crazy and it will take them years to undo it. It might even not be something they can fix. If they try they might just get branded as co-conspirators that must have been infiltrated by the black supremacist or shadow science organizations or whatever. It'll be interesting to see how Fox plays it the next four years. I'm betting they ease off the crazy and start at least toning it down to the point where their base is at least willing to reluctantly accept a candidate that isn't insane, but we'll see.
