George Zimmerman sues NBC over Trayvon Martin reports

hmm... this isn't doctored then is it?

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

And yes, for the wise ass out there I know Im only using the first goddamn sentence of the address.

Just probing questions....

NBC admitted they were inaccurate/false and a couple of employees were fired over it

Basically they admitted that their editing of Z's statements made it appear that Z recounted M to NEN because M was black.
but where is the PROOF to demonstrate such was the network's intent

I'm just probing.....

You think NBC...*aka journalist* should be held to a higher standard when airing the tape without checking the validity or truthfulness of said recording before putting it out?

I can't find what suit this is, libel?, defamation of character?

I'm just probing.....
absolutely, that's part of the process

what is needed to establish intent is a smoking gun, showing the network deliberately edited the film to cast zimmerman in an unfavorable light
and there is nothing i have seen which evidences such conduct
maybe the legal team has it
maybe they are just shaking down the network with a nuisance suit, hoping to realize some settlement money; could be cost effective for the network, not having to incur protracted legal fees
also makes a statement to the public/prospective jurors, at no real cost, that zimmerman did NOT behave in a racist manner

In defamation, does the plaintiff still have to prove malice if the defendant is the press?

I don't think so. Zimm just has to prove that NBC's report on him, specifically, the lie they told by altering recordings, has caused him harm. That's it. And it is easily proven. Then again, NBC has more money then Zimm, so they may have better lawyers.

Who knows. It's all in a court of law so its up to the Judge. What if the Judge is a racist black man?

Either way, I don't see how NBC can mount a defense.

Personally, I don't think he has much of a chance of winning, but I admire him for at least trying to do something. Someone has to make a stand against the BS that NBC pulled and hopefully deter other media outlets from doing the same.

George Zimmerman sues NBC over Trayvon Martin reports
I hope he cleans house with them. News agencies need to learn that if they sacrifice somebody's reputation in order to get ratings, there will be consequences. I can't even imagine the number of death threats Zimmerman must've gotten.

Maybe if enough suits like this appear, the news might have to make an effort to produce facts and not endless conjecture.

their defense would be that it was nothing more than editing, benign act
that there was no intent to harm zimmerman

"Oh, woops. My editor just slipped his hand on the mouse and the whole recording ended up sounding like a racist rant. "

Yeah, that will work perfectly. I mean, that i can't wait. I didn't give a hoot about the zimm/trayvon case because it was stupid and overhyped and so much noise for something very common, that lead to ignore a lot of important things, but this, this I will follow. This is important. Because the media and the journalists are supposed to be fair, balanced and objective. I hope NBC loses millions.

Their defense will be that the employees involved violated company policy to sensationalize the issue to improve their careers and sell more advertising, not to hurt Zimm.

And they'll win because there is no personal malice involved.

Another problem for Zimm is assigning damages.

I think the trial will be fascinating watching the pross try to make new case law by criminalizing racial profiling.

This you have is totally different. You're chopping out here and there in a whole sentence. If I can only put one full sentence into a caption of a picture, am I guilty of doctoring if I failed to put the whole paragraph? Certainly not.

Sorry, when you add someones response to one question to their response to a different question without adding the 2nd question in the audio before the 2nd response, it changes the entire message.

It's a bad edit job in poor taste, I don't disagree with that. However, it doesn't rise to the level of "doctoring".

Having said that, the message you refer to is all in the eyes of the beholder. If the edited part was followed by Zimmerman saying, "he's white", or "he's Asian" I'm sure nobody is crying wolf. By saying "he's black" no matter whether the dispatcher had asked about the race, Zimmerman was merely reporting fact as he saw it. Most people understood that as it happened all the times. What people were upset about wasn't this editing (until someone brought it out). What upset most people were his muffling under his breadth when he said the word which people thought was a racial slur "coon" or something like that. And also his description of Trayvon as on drugs and up to no good followed by "these asshole they always get away..." as he ran after him.

Are you grim? How can you say you spanked me when this is yet another illustration of your inability to read properly? So again I have to ask the question. Are you unable to read, too lazy to read, or are you a sock?

Do you even know what a sock is?

However, if you attribute him saying someone is "Up to no good, he is black" in the manner NBC did, it INFERS that the individual believes that the person is "up to no good" simply BECAUSE they are "black". In the end.... the information "he is black" was not offered as SUPPORTING EVIDENCE of someone being up to no good (like NBC led people to believe) but it was elicited in the form of a question from the dispatcher of what the race of the subject was. HUGE difference.

Most people understood that as it happened all the times. What people were upset about wasn't this editing (until someone brought it out). Most adults in America can look at a person and make a GUESS as to whether that person is on drugs based upon the actions and mannerisms they are observing. I always assumed that he had observed something which led him to such a conclusion... its rather common.

Its not common for someone to say, "This person is up to no good they are black!!!!!"

NEN Phone Call

Thugboat: This guy, he looks like he is up to no good…

or he’s on drugs or something…

it’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about

NEN Dispatcher: Okay this guy, is he white, black or hispanic?

Thugboat: He looks black

NBC

Thugboat: This guy looks like he is up to no good

(Pause)

Thugboat: He looks black

I believe NBC did Thugboat a favor. The original NEN call makes him appear racist. The edited one, not so much.

I predict the case will be dismissed easily.
