Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"! [W:78]

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

Although I do not like how this has gotten sidetracked, I am going to put in my 2 cents worth here.

About 6 years ago, I was working as a delivery driver to a company in Alabama. Now I normally worked the night shift, which meant regularly going into some of the worst areas of town after 9pm at night. One night I was making the last 2 deliveries of the evening, and had a funny feeling. I pulled up into a bad area of town, and saw 2 teens hanging out in a vacant lot across the street. And the porch light of the house I was supposed to deliver to was off. Having a "funny feeling", I took my 4 D-cell MagLight with me to the door (the first time in a year I had ever done that).

A lady answered me through the door, saying they had not ordered any pizza. As I walked back to my car, the kids that were in the parking lot jumped me. Both armed with metal pipes, and both proceeded to start swinging. I managed to run fast enough that they only got in a few swings, but only got a few bruises. In short, these kids were cousins, the mother-aunt owned 2 businesses next door to where I was robbed, and they thought they were emulating the "Thug Life" by doing this (and apparently did the same thing to at least 5 other delivery drivers in the year prior).

They were both 16. The 16 year old (son) turned evidence, and got a 5 year sentence. The 16 year old (nephew) pled guilty to 1st degree robbery, and was given a 21 year sentence without parole. Both were convicted as adults because of the violence against myself and the previous drivers.

This blather about "adult", "teen", it is all nonsense. If somebody knows what they are doing, they are an adult.

And they are both very lucky it was me that did the delivery. While pretty much all companies have a policy about delivery drivers being armed, there are exceptions. One of our drivers was a Deputy Sheriff in the next county over, and he was required to have his gun with him at all times. He told me after that he wished he had been the one to take the call, "Cause those guys would have looked stupid bringing metal pipes to a gun fight."

Dothan man gets 21 years for pizza robbery

A judge sentenced a Dothan man to serve 21 years in prison for the theft of a pizza during an armed robbery of a pizza delivery man.

According to court records, Lashun Cortez White, 18, of East Burdeshaw Street, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the robbery of XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXX a delivery man for Domino’s Pizza. Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford handed down the sentence as part of the plea agreement. White faced 10 to 99 years or life in prison for first-degree robbery, a class A felony.

Investigators arrested White in July 2007 for the robbery.

Assistant District Attorney Gary Maxwell said White called for a pizza, which was delivered to an address which did not belong to him.

“As the delivery guy comes up he hits him with a pipe,” Maxwell said. “The pizza guy dropped the pizza and takes off running. The defendant picks up the pizza and goes back to his aunt’s (house) and eats the pizza.”

Maxwell said there was no cash taken during the robbery only the pizza.

This happened to me about 2 months before I left for the Army. And one of the last things to happen before I left was that the DA called me in, to ask tell me that there had been an arrest, and if I was interested in taking "Victim's Restitution" funds in exchange for a lesser sentence. He told me how much it was (it was a decent chunk of change), and I told him flat out I was not interested. I did not want any money, and I was not interested in any plea deal, I wanted them both to get the max, and do some hard time. ANd that is exactly what happened.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

The age of majority is 18 in Florida. Legally, he was a child. Now YOU can try to paint Martin as deserving to be shot by insisting he's a man, but the law clearly states in Florida, 17 is a child.

And 2 16 year old "children" assaulted me with metal pipes. One of which has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

This "child" you mention has a criminal record himself. He has been suspended from school 3 times, once for tagging school lockers, and when search they found women's jewelry and burglary tools in his backpack. A later suspension was for bringing drugs on campus.

As for the Martin-Zimmerman case, I am staying newutral until all the facts are in. As far as I am concerned, Mr. Zimmerman is innocent until proven guilty. And I am deeply disturbed by the amount of people who want to rush justice in this case, and scream that he is guilty even before there is any kind of complete investigation, let alone a trial.

Perhaps, to some degree.... but what he mainly was is ALERT and PREPARED. Criminals hate alert and prepared "victims" because they are hard to victimize.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

You are very, very lucky...............

As Goshin said, I was not just lucky. In many cases, I believe we make our own luck.

What I am is trained, and street smart. When I see 2 teens hanging out in a vacant field at 10pm, alarm bells go off. And when I saw them come at me with metal pipes, I dropped the pizzas and ran. However, it was not a blind flight. I kept to the middle of the street, where there were lights. And once I got far enough away that he could not strike me, I would turn around and face him, holding the flashlight as a club. And the message was pretty clear, stay back, and I do not hit you with it, come to close and fail to take me down, and you are in a world of hurt buddy.

Far to many people in this world are sheep. They walk around as sheep, thinking nothing but sheep thoughts. They have no idea how to tell if a wolf is in the area, or what to do when that wolf attacks them. I am sure the 2 punks that tried to rob me thought they were wolves, and that this middle aged guy would be a push-over. The last thing I think they expected was to be met with a show of force in return.

And they were arrested within 2 weeks of the robbery. The next day I was driving by where I was robbed on my way to work to turn in my resignation, and saw the pizza boxes on top of the trash can between the 2 businesses that the aunt owns. I called the cops, and identified both suspects. That was enough to get an arrest, and later convictions. I have no pity for criminals, and am glad I was able to help do my part to put them away.

My wife when I was deployed a few years ago had something similar happen to her. She head glass breaking, and the alarm on her car going off. She went outside, and found 3 kids trying to steal her car. She asked them in Spanish what they were doing, and one started to walk towards her with the crowbar he had used to break the window. She simply pulled our .380 out of her pocket, and asked if he wanted some of that too. They quickly scattered, and the cops when they arrived asked her why she had not shot them. In texas, they see walking towards somebody with a metal pipe as a deadly threat.

Yes.. I agree that people should be observant and cautious. Sounds like your experience and your wife's was real.. and required cold, sober thought... You weren't dealing with imaginary criminals.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

She could assert Castle Doctrine, but Trayvon had Stand Your Ground rights.

The right to stand your ground does not mean the right to begin an attack; it only means to defend against an attack.

Zimmerman shot a child.

Ehrm... I guess that means Trayvon was a "grown-assed child" then? By legal definition. He wasn't walking home from daycare.

I've said it before, and I will say it again here. If any of you are ever being followed around by some creepy dude call the cops instead of having a conversation with your significant other about it.

Oh, they were real. The article I listed was most real, and it included my real name, the only reason I redacted it and did not give a link to the web site. I do like some of my privacy after all.

For Lashun, he was basically given a choice. Plead guilty in the strong case of attacking me, or take his chance in front of a jury with 6 cases of assault and robbery, one of which included the clubbing of a pregnant woman. But these were not "poor kids", the aunt owned 2 successfull businesses, and the entire family ate and enjoyed eating the pizzas. They even watched the assault like it was some kind of video game.

The daughter of a friend told me a few months later that she knew him, and he was always bragging on being "real gangsta". And that he had several disciples who tried to emulate him. Well, now he knows what "real gangsta" is all about.

As for the other, that is the joys of living in the city across the river from the deadliest city in the world. My wife thought I was paranoid when I insisted on putting an alarm in the car the day after we bought it, and that she needed to know where the gun safe was and where the key was. Ever since then, she has never argued when I insist she knows where they are.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

I think SYG is bad law, but if George asserts it.. then Trayvon had the higher justification.

No citizen has the right to interfer with another who is doing NOTHING unlawful.. George's limit was to call the police .. nothing more.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

That story about the pizza guy being attacked and this woman who used a gun to protect herself in her home definitely show why it should be legal to be armed. I used to deliver for Papa John's for a year. I carried a gun (legally) and I wouldn't always take it with me to the doors, but if I was in a crappy part of town or I was going to be out of sight of my vehicle I took it with me. We had one driver at my store get robbed that year.

Moral of that story is never try to rob a pizza guy. You never know if they're armed, and they're too broke all the time to except losing a few hundred dollars to some asshole; the potential loss of money may be motivation enough for them to put a 9mm through your skull in self-defense... unless he's high at the time.

Once again, do not judge that case. The facts are not all in, there has been no trial. Right now, you are simply basing the case on what you want to believe.

But trust me, if somebody attacked me, or broke into my home, or threatened my wife, he would be a corpse. Plain and simple. I do not care if he felt justified or not, your best option in those cases is to simply walk away (or run away like I did).

Actually, nobody robs a pizza guy unless they are trying to prove something.

All companies like that have strict policies in place. For one, no cash over $25. Period. Occasionally the manager would go up to us and have us empty our pockets. If we had more then $40, we were in trouble. The idea is to help ensure that nobody would be getting enough money to make it worthwhile to rob us.

Also, there are strict rules about being armed. As a driver, I could not even have pepper spray or a taser in my car, that was a termination offense. However, a flashlight was not considered a weapon, so I got the biggest MagLight I could find. The Deputy was an exception, since he was required to be armed at all time since he was on call 24-7. And like me, he was not really doing this for the money.

We both had full time jobs, me as a computer technician, he as a deputy. But both of us had friends that were managers at that store, and we were working a couple nights a week as a favor to them, since most delivery drivers are horrible flakes. Both of us pretty much only worked weekends, and normally made double the deliveries a night then the "regular drivers" (he felt no problem with speeding since he was a cop, I used GPS to plan all of my deliveries and would take 2-4 deliveries out at a time). Plus we took things seriously, being at work at 6 meant being there no later then 5:45, ready to go. Not strolling in the door at 6:30, and bailing at 9:00 because there was a wicked party you did not want to miss.

I absolutely agree with you on every point.. and your experience deliverying Pizza was not your over active imagination... nor were you looking to be a hero or to gain recognition.

Well, do not label me as something I am not either. Cause trust me, if I had a chance I would have given that guy a crushed skull with that flashlight.

Mostly what I am is a law and order individual. I do not judge cases that are still pending, and I feel no pity for people that do things they should not be doing. And to me, the system of offering a payment from the "victim restitution fund" in exchange for a plea bargain is nothing more then witness tampering and pribery by the State. Which is a major reason why I turned it all down. That kid is going to be about the same age when he gets out of jail as when I was when he attacked me. And I am happy for that.

Yeah, that sounds about right. At my store we had rules about carrying money too, but the managers never enforced it. If you actually took the time to do cash drops you would fall behind and then be screwed, and due to the morally screwed up economic system we have where companies set rules and then make them practically impossible to follow thus forcing people to break them or lose their jobs(I am referring to store management losing their jobs) they no longer care about following every rule to a tee. Carry a gun to defend myself or get fired from... lol... a pizza shop. That's an easy choice. When I got a carry permit my store's manager said, "as long as I don't know about it I don't care what you do."

Also, someone who robs a pizza guy just might be an idiot. Let's not forget that. For all we know, they think we carry $1000 around.

Now on that other post by Sharon. I wouldn't say GZ was actually interfering with TM at all. He followed him. That's it. If following someone is interfering with them, then picking an item up off of the shelf at the store to look at it would be theft.

How do you compare shopping with following someone? I walk in the evenings in a large gated community and in the winter I generally wear a hoodie.. There are lots of teens and young adults who walk because just outside the community there is easy access to mass transportation.

If George followed me in his car and then on foot, there would be hell to pay.... because its creepy and scary..

Remember George didn't speak.

I feel the same way. I think having a "backed-up" legal system is just an excuse for lawyers to get overpaid to not work. A plea bargain takes 20 minutes if that. If everyone who gets arrested for something wasn't threatened with the alternative of an oversentencing if they actually try to take advantage of their right to a fair trial we would need a lot more judges, DA's, and public defenders. The point shouldn't be about if someone obviously did it or not; the point should be that the state is forced to prove it regardless, and I think that an overcrowded legal system is an extremely poor excuse. Part of the problem is that we prosecute too many over-restrictive laws. The second part is that we allow our "justice" system to basically blackmail people into pleading guilty. I've never been in major trouble with the law in my lifetime, but I would imagine that if I were but was actually innocent that I would be worried about more than just the actions I did because in many cases the best piece of evidence is the testimony of an officer. I would wonder: is the judge just going to assume I'm lying if it's not what the officer claims? Will the officer stretch the truth in court or use those cute little phrases they teach them to write in the academy any time they handle a certain type of case? If something is not processed properly by the state will anyone care?

It's scary to think that those things are even up for concern in the U.S. We have as few freedoms as a whole lot of other countries. We make ourselves look like a bunch of self-righeous jerks by dubbing ourselves to be "the land of the free." We aren't any more free than England or Germany; actually, they probably have it better since they are smaller. It's easier to know what's running through the hive-mind of your country when it's local. Here we just blame the problems on "all those idiots whom are living by the other ocean smoking pot all day/in the trailer parks growing their mullets/in major cities sucking money from the economy without adding to it/trust fund babies who don't know what work means/jesus-land freaks that want to shove religion down your throat/religion-lacking moral-less devil worshippers/damn gun-slinging rich Republicans/bleeding-heart Liberal hippies" because we are under a government that is on so large of a scale where almost no one wants to step up to the plate to make a difference.

Re: Teen mom shoots and kills 24-year-old intruder as she "stands her ground"!

Sarah McKinley, a young mother whose husband died of cancer in mid-December, shot and killed an intruder who had broken into her home while she was alone with her 3-month-old baby
The bolded alone is enough justification for this. Breaking into a person's house is one thing. When kids are present, all stops are pulled. Also, home defense is Castle Doctrine, not Stand Your Ground. SYG law allows self defense outside of the home. I don't know why people keep confusing the two.

If someone was following you to see what you were doing then why would you be upset if you have nothing to hide? If one doesn't like being seen by the public then he/she should just stay inside I guess.

Second, if someone creepy was following you woud you attack them or would you call the police? If you weren't doing anything wrong you'd probably call the police.

But if you were a mighty super hero (and a bit stoned?), a legend in your own mind and a no-limit-nigga then you would show that lttle, fat SOB "wassup wiff dat" and punch his lights out until... What? You be armed? Hey man, I didn't mean nuffin'... the end.

When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified.

That's about as straightforward as these things get. Assuming the facts are accurate, that woman's actions are totally justified and completely legal in most US jurisdictions (possibly all; I haven't done the research).
