If Zimmerman says... well, maybe Trayvon was going to kill me, but I felt scared and so I killed him to protect myself... then that's not as strong of a defense. As Excon likes to point out, another SYG case where a thief swung a bag of radios at a guy he robbed. He defense said, he feared for his life when the robber swung the back at so the defendant stabbed the robber to death. The defendant was found innocent under SYG.
So leaving room to suggest that Trayvon may have not intended to kill Zimmerman, isn't going to help Zimmerman's defense.
These two paragraphs/sentences explain why you are so badly misinformed about self defense.
All Zimmerman had to do was think Martin would harm him badly, he didn't have to fear for his life, that is NOT a requirement. Just like it is not a requirement for him to have sustained terrible life threatening injuries. In fact, he could have been justified in shooting TM without having sustained a scratch. Again, being injured is not a requirement.
You may want to double or triple your level of knowledge on this before speaking any further. I'm running out of facepalm gif's.
