(CBS/AP) SANFORD, Fla. - Bill Lee, the central Florida police chief who was strongly criticized for his agency's initial investigation of Trayvon Martin's shooting in February has been fired.

Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte said in a Wednesday statement that he relieved Chief Bill Lee of duty because he "determined the Police Chief needs to have the trust and respect of the elected officials and the confidence of the entire community."

"We need to move forward with a police chief that all the citizens of Sanford can support," Bonaparte said. "I have come to this decision in light of the escalating divisiveness that has taken hold of the city."

Sanford Police Department faced criticism after the initial lack of an arrest following the Feb. 26 shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager, by neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman, who claims self-defense and pleaded not guilty. The local prosecutor recused himself from the case, prompting Gov. Rick Scott to appoint special prosecutor Angela Corey, who charged Zimmerman in April with second-degree murder.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin's parents, said in a statement that the parents respected the city manager's decision.

Lee took a leave of absence in March and offered his resignation in April. The city council rejected Lee's resignation by a 3-2 vote. In May, Rick Myers took over as Sanford's interim police chief, saying he wanted to heal the emotional wounds caused by Martin's death.

Bonaparte said he had been in contact with the Police Executive Research Forum about the search for Lee's successor.

"I believe that there are many law enforcement officials who will find accepting the opportunity to serve as Sanford's Police Chief a welcome challenge for their careers," the city manager said. "I expect the search for a new chief to take several months."

Lee will get three months of severance and one week's salary, in addition to any earned time off, under his contract.

"I wish Chief Lee all the best in his future endeavors," Bonaparte said.

Looks like Bill Lee is out. I'm surprised they aren't considering the interim police chief to become permanent.

The firing was completely political.

Its damage control by the city, appeasement, hell it pretty much says it in the statement, in fancier terms of course.

The firing was long overdue. They believed his claim that he was defending himself and applied the 'stand your ground' law - hence the initial lack of arrest?

There was no need. Zim's behavior after the incident was consistent and reasonable
 
not cool... he didn't do anything deserving of being fired...he applied the law to the situation, he didn't commit a crime, he didn't go beyond policy, he acted in good faith and was bent over for doing so.


I do find it funny that he tendered his resignation... then it was denied... then he was fired.

I don't get involved in these idiot Zimmerman threads, but i had to put my 2 pennies in on this one.

And the bold and underlined portion above just goes to furthur prove that this firing was completely 100% political.

If the purpose was for this person to no longer be in control of the police department, it would have been accomplished via his resignation.

They fired him for political purposes.

I don't care if he was fired because of "completely 100% political". In my book, he is a 100% bold face liar who bent over backwards to come out and lie to the whole nation about all the testimonies and physical evidence being consistent with Zimmerman's claim of self-defense.

For whatever reasons, he clearly was bending over backward to cover for Zimmerman no matter what the public already knew at that time that didn't make sense from all that was leaked. Now, the evidence we see confirmed that he is a bold face liar.

That's the reason you have the Sanford detectives unable to do their job completely and thoroughly because the Chief already decided that there was no case. That's the reason you have Serino changing his position so as not to offend the Chief to save his job. That's also the reason that we have this public outcry and demonstrations and nationwide unrest and disagreement.

He should had been fired long ago after he came out on behalf of Zimmerman and lied to the public.
