Some Oregonians Want to Secede to Join Idaho

I don't have a dog in this fight, but it looks interesting.

Some Republicans in super-liberal Oregon are looking to ‘secede to Idaho’
A conservative group in Oregon is collecting signatures to make the rural counties in the state a part of Idaho. It's not the first time in recent history the borders of Oregon have faced a proposed change.

Seven years ago, keen for a more conservative lifestyle, Mike McCarter, a firearms instructor in La Pine, Ore., considered moving to Idaho.
But McCarter, 72, diagnosed with stomach cancer, decided not to. Now he’s thinking he might just move Idaho to him.

The Republican is a leader of a group called Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho, which thinks Oregon’s government has become too liberal and would prefer to transfer Oregon’s rural areas to Idaho’s authority.

While Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton narrowly won Oregon in 2016, then-Republican candidate Donald Trump swept up Idaho with nearly 60 percent of the vote.

McCarter’s group is asking 18 Oregon counties to approve their petitions to open communications with Oregon’s legislature. Three have in the past week, McCarter said. Once approved, the group still would need to collect signatures of about 6 percent of the counties’ populations for local voters to see the referendum on their November ballots, the Oregonian recently reported. . . .

Why don't they just simply pick up and leave for Idaho if it means that much to them?

Great idea!

Let the liberals live together.

Let the conservatives live together.

Let the moderates live together.

It would be a win-win for everyone. An end to all this bickering.

In the coming decades, there is a distinct possibility that Americans will peacefully do a Yugoslavia.

kinda like what happened during the Civil war Parser?(LOL)

The people west of Portland and might I add south see laws coming out of the Oregon Legislature that threaten their livelihoods, their industries, their basic Constitutional rights. They have tried everything possible to turn things around and at this time see no other way but to join Idaho that does recognize their basic rights. You can call it babbling, I call it a cry of U.S. citizens that have reached the end of the road. Two counties will be voting on leaving Oregon this Fall and they are saying counties in the South of the state may be joining them.

This is the result of desperation of trying to get rid of leftist policies.

They could always move

West of Portland is in the Pacific Ocean.

This is literally insane babbling.

Folks west of Portland live all the way out to Astoria.

2016 county election results, the whole electoral college complaint, proves it’s not insane.

They do live all the way out to Astoria. And still have nothing in common with Portland.

The key word this time is "peacefully."

Life is so short. Surely, people deserve to be as happy as possible.

Reports are that the former Yugoslavia is now a much more harmonious place.

Yes, like our civil war?

One problem

We're not Yugo, we're these United American states

On a serious note, I hope that you and your neighbors in Idaho can keep the harmonious (and relatively crime-free) society that you have.

I once read that some years back, people in Oregon said something like: Welcome, visitors. Enjoy yourselves. But please do not stay. (It seems, however, that many tourists decided to stay.)

I hope that Idaho can avoid such a fate.

Best wishes!

LOL! Literally nothing you just babbled about is happening.

Enjoy your fantasy!

Uh...no, its absolutely not. The Serbs in Bosnia are talking about leaving.....again. The only thing all that genocide and ethnic cleansing accomplished was to murder innocent people.

It's a joke.

They are drawing the borders of "Greater Idaho" to be full of white, right wing, people.

It would be the reddest state ever.

They could always move

No, they're like little children and somehow believe they're entitled to the political leadership they want or they're going to take their ball and go home. The "snowflake" stuff is projection, like it always is with these right wingers.

It looks like they are also taking part of California...

Has about as much chance of happening as gravity all of a sudden not working tomorrow.

Probably... but it illustrates ho the EC is an utter failure, alienating the vote of millions and millions of people.

Not that this conversation has not occurred for the umpteenth time around here, but abandoning the EC would do the exact same thing in alienating the vote of millions simply because the rural areas and less populated States would have zero impact on the election.

They could always move

Yep and you see the exodus occurring out of California in the past few years over many of the same issues. But there comes a time when the people say enough and fight back. These people have two choices. They have done everything possible within Oregon so now it is down to move or fight to secede from Oregon. These are rural areas and they are collecting the signatures and it appears they will be successful in getting it on the ballot. It will be interesting to watch what happens.

Demographics change over time as do cultures. It sucks for those on the losing side of history's march.
