Advocates blame anti-vaxxers after four-year-old boy dies from flu | US news | The Guardian

[Colorado boy’s mother admitted in a Facebook post she refused to fill the doctor’s prescription for Tamiflu/B]

Health advocates are blaming anti-vaccine propaganda perpetuated online for the death of a four-year-old Colorado boy from the flu earlier this week.

The boy’s mother, Geneva Montoya, admitted in a Facebook post that she refused to fill the doctor’s prescription for Tamiflu, the most common antiviral medication prescribed to treat the flu.
===============================================================================
The mother’s engagement with an online group called Stop Mandatory Vaccination. The group of nearly 140,000 members, also called anti-vaxxers, is known for peddling false health information and discouraging parents from vaccinating their children.

While she didn't deliberately plan to kill her child, her lack of action directly led to it. She should be brought up on charges, which would make her life even worse than it probably already is.

And why this growing need to confess your sins or misdeeds on Facebook? Monoya sounds Latino so why did she just go to confession? Why tell the world when you can just tell God?

Unless flu vaccines are mandatory on Colorado I don't possibly see how she could be charged with anything.

I would take advice on FB with a grain of salt.

Thanks for posting this but, your analysis is lacking any compassion or humanity.

Sadly, being stupid is not yet a crime......however, in this case, it may have contributed to the death of her child.

Just sad and tragic all the way around.

The problem here is not that the child wasn't vaccinated, but that the parent withheld Tamiflu, an antiviral medication, after the child contracted the flu. That could be considered neglect. Personally, I think that the pain of losing a child is punishment enough.

I don't have either passion or humanity for this woman or anti-vaxxers in general. These people make me think that they've all reverted to the 16th Century when witch trials were in vogue.

She lost her child because of her deliberate inaction even when that inaction was caused by the advice of her soul-mate anti-vaxxers.

People die of the flu all the time with or without Tamiflu. People who get vaccinated for the flu and have right vaccination for the flu die all the time. The flu kills a lot of people. Period. There is no one to blame, let alone charge. The flu has a death rate. Its not very high but it still takes lives. The Medical communities have been trying to cure the flu and the common cold for all as the medical communities existed. They have come up with Tamiflu and vaccinations, and these things may or may not work, or more like work minimally.

The reason people are scared of the Chinese flu is simple, it has a higher death rate. Guess what, its a flu and reacts like one. Which means you could take a vaccination for it and maybe it will work, you could take Tamiflu and maybe it will work. You could take an antiviral cocktail and maybe it will work. Maybe.

The child already had the illness that killed him so it would be a hard stretch IMO especially since he reportedly had a seizure before she took him to the doctor.

According to the articles I have read she was taking the advice of "natural healer" types online. It was unfortunate but it was her right and there are vaccinated children who still die from the flu. It was interesting to read she went back and deleted a lot of her old posts after her child died...which is a little messed up but I suppose not unreasonable in this day and age.

My own grandmother died this way. She had cancer and tried to treat it with herbs and internet gimmicks. After years of metastasizing she eventually succombed to sepsis. But it was her right.

We dont know that. Tamiflu does not nor has ever worked with 100% efficacy or even close for that matter. Flu's have a take rate.

You also don't care much for people's religious beliefs or God in general based on your attacks. Why even go there?

IOW, you can do what you please to yourself & others related to you. That's not the way a civilized society is supposed to work.

Right. Tamiflu guarantees nothing. Probably no better than Elderberry syrup.

She made a judgement call as a parent to try "natural" remedies rather than one with more efficacy because she got bad advice from people who, like her, are suspicious of the medical establishment. Not to be a completely terrible human being, but this is its own kind natural selection.

No medicine guarantees anything, but I imagine Tamiflu has vastly better results than Elderberry syrup in the treatment of the flu.

If you hadn't noticed, the Trump era has released us all from having to care all that much about being "civilized". Me, mine, and my own is all that matters and no "elites" can tell me what to do or what is in the best interest of me or my family.

IDK, there are folks on FB who swear by it.:)

The new miracle "cure" is Xofluza

My grandmother gave me Mullein Leaf when I was a kid. It was the fad "natural" cure-all when I was a kid. It has changed at least 20 times since then.

I have nothing against natural concoctions for health. That's actually where most pharmaceuticals come from.

Yup. They isolate the active ingredient and manufacture that without the impurities so it can be administered at much higher concentrations or slightly alter it to allow it to be easily absorbed. Tamiflu is derived from Illicium Verum which is a Chinese tree.

She chose medical quackery & her kid died.

No it's not. I have a degree in chemistry & worked with the pharmaceutical industry for 40 years. You have no basis fore making such a ridiculous statement.

Tamiflu isn't a vaccine and unless taken at the onset it does no good. Tamilflu also is not a cure. It can reduce the symptoms.
