Mormons pulling 400,000 youths out of struggling Boy Scouts

Mormons pulling 400,000 youths out of struggling Boy Scouts

KAYSVILLE, Utah (AP) — For decades, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was one of Boy Scouts of America’s greatest allies and the largest sponsor of troops. But on Jan. 1, the Utah-based faith will deliver the latest blow to the struggling organization when it pulls out more than 400,000 young people and moves them into a new global program of its own.

The change brings excitement and some melancholy for members of the faith and may push the Boy Scouts closer to the brink of bankruptcy as it faces a new wave of sex abuse lawsuits.

The LDS are setting up their own global youth program. I think a big part of this was the BS allowing girls to join.

'If you're looking for adventure of a new & different kind, and you run across a girl scout who is similarly inclined, don't be flustered, don't be nervous, done't be scared - Be prepared!' - Tom Lehrer

I wish both those Mormon parents who pulled their boys from the Scouts as well as the Boy Scouts of America them the best of luck. It is sad, though. I was hoping to enroll my son in the Boy Scouts of America when he came of age. They might not be around when that time comes. :(

The skills I learned becoming an Eagle Scout have shaped me in so many ways. Some of the best times of my childhood were spent with the Boy Scouts. I hope they make a comeback.

By the way, what are your thoughts of girls being allowed to join? Because on the one hand, I am told that the actual scouting the Boy Scouts do is far more comprehensive than what the Girl Scouts do. For really outdoorsy little girls, I can understand wanting to join a group that actually engages in more outdoors survival activities.

Is it due to all the child molestation in the Boy Scouts or that the Boy Scouts have decided to allow gays?

I have mixed feelings about the BSA. I was a Cub Scout, then a BSA, but it was 2nd-3rd grade time & was getting severely bullied by the same kids I was supposed to be palling with in the BSA. My father refused to let me quit them. So I kicked my usual stubborn streak into gear & instead of meeting my parents' car for the usual ride home from school, I walked the mile to the nearest suburban train station to pretend to run away from home over this impass. By the time my parents located me, I was out of the BSA with no further discussion. Funny how confrontation works wonders. Be prepared!

Maybe it’s because they found out that some fine, upstanding young Mormon scouts were urinating in the water of other scouts.

Just maybe.

I know you weren’t speaking to me, but I would like to add my opinion here.

My girls were all girl scouts, and left because it was boring. All they did was crafting, and cookie sales. Maybe they didn’t have the best troop leader - I dunno. I do know that they would have enjoyed Boy Scouts far more than Girl Scouts.

Never much liked Mormons, or the boy scouts. Can't say this upsets me. The Mormon church should be considered a cult, and lose any and all federal benefits and any special protections and status it may receive.

Our experiences differ widely. The Mormons I have met, spent time with and befriended have been some of the nicest most decent people I know. And even if my experiences were as apparently negative as yours, I would not seek to persecute them on the basis of a few bad experiences. After all, we could do the same thing to Jews, to Catholics, and to Muslims as well. The only thing that separates them from the Mormons is that the Mormon's Prophet simply came around in the time of newspapers and photographs.

Allowing girls to join the Boy Scouts is the progressive way. Other countries allow girls in Boy Scouts.
However girls have been part of Scouting for some time. Girls in scouts is not new.
Venture scouting is part of the Boy Scout organization which allow girls from the age of 14 to 21.
Explorer Scouts have allowed girls for years.

It's not based on my experience with individual Mormons, but rather my dislike for the church, its history, doctrine, and practices. I like ex Mormons just fine. But a nice cult member is still a cult member, and they are complicit in the actions of the group in which they are a member.

It’s called Venture Scouts allowing boys and girls ages 14-21 to join and is more high adventure that regular scouts.
My daughter was in Venture scouts and reached the highest award.
My son was in scouting and reached the rank of eagle.

The vetting of scout leaders is so much different than years ago.
You will have a few evil people in every organization.

Why do you dislike the Mormon Church? And how is the Mormon Church any different functionally than, say, the Catholic Church? Why is one a cult and the other not, other than the Mormon Church being less old?

It really isn't the Boy Scouts fault. For decades they have been receiving federal funds, and as a result they had no choice but to allow homosexuals. The real irony is that Sen. Orin Hatch from Utah was the one who gave the most taxpayer money to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and other not-private-any-longer youth organizations. Which forced the Boy Scouts to accept homosexuals as long as they continued to receive public funds. Had Sen. Hatch not paid the Boy Scouts millions of taxpayer dollars, they could have discriminated against anyone they pleased as a private organization.

What church/cult do you associate with?

My experience with BSA consisted of raising funds for the annual Jamboree, and seeing it all blow away when the scout master absconded those funds. That was in the 60's in southeast Texas, where the LDS were hard to find at that time.
The LDS are not pulling the kids, just withdrawing financial support, which is substantial. Members of the church can stick with the BSA or go with the new LDS program. And federal funds? This is the first time I heard that. Tax exempt status perhaps....but actual funding?

I don't like the catholic church either, and if I could revoke their special status as well I would do so.

Aside from all the usual reasons to dislike such churches, homophobia, patriarchy, social shunning of those who leave the faith, etc, Mormon scripture also teaches that dark skin is a punishment from God for moral and spiritual inferiority.

I'm not going to get into the various reasons why Joseph Smith lacks legitimacy. Suffice to say, he was full of crap.

I suspect it is the latter, but no one really knows. The church isn't making any official statement on the matter.

That said, a well run scout troop is a real asset to boys, and now maybe to girls as well. I wish them the best. I was a scouter myself when my son was of scouting age. He's now an eagle scout.

Actual funding. Look in any agricultural appropriation bill and you will find federal funding allocated to not just the Boy Scouts of America, but also the Girl Scouts, 4-H Clubs, and Future Farmers of America. We aren't talking small change either, but rather tens of millions in taxpayer funds.

Then there was the "Support Our Scouts Act of 2005" which Congress hid inside H.R.2863 - Department of Defense, Emergency Supplemental Appropriations to Address Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, and Pandemic Influenza Act, 2006 that became Public Law 109-148 and provided multiple millions more of taxpayer money for these youth organizations.

By accepting taxpayer funding the Boy Scouts of America ceased to be a private organization and became a publicly-funded organization, and required to comply with all the federal anti-discriminatory laws.
