California To Have Ethnic Studies Curriculum For High School Graduation?

True story...my grandfather had me convinced as a little kid that fortune cookies were made out of old used chopsticks. I believed that way longer than I should have. Didn't make that true either. ;)

True story, My adult children and I like to debate my parental skills. My daughter said you lied to me about Santa being real. I reminded her that I never told her Santa was real. She heard about Santa from friends, television and other sources besides me.

Then, I reminded her about the time when she was young... she told me she didn't like the idea of Santa coming in the house even if he was bringing gifts.

And, that I told her he was not real and that Mommy, Daddy and Grandparents were the gift suppliers and never did like the idea of Santa getting the credit for the gifts.

We had a good laugh. I won the debate.

True information is important.

Care to debate whether or not Political Correctness is fascism with a smile on its face.

We don't have to decide, you guys make it perfectly clear with all your deplorable words and actions

Nope, you just move the goal posts around to suit your political ambitions. Everyone with half a brain realizes you care more about the political issue than actually solving the problem.

I see the illegal immigration problem as being primarily caused by (due to?) a lack of effective interior immigration law enforcement efforts thus any solution must address that problem. Illegal immigrants come from two sources: those who enter illegally (border jumpers) and those who enter legally but remain illegally (visa overstayers and those denied asylum claims). Addressing (the smaller?) half of that problem does nothing to solve the (larger?) other half.

Addressing neither solves nothing. The fight over solving the border issue is quite telling about those who oppose it. Legal changes are necessary. If you can get the Dems to agree to that, wonderful. They are two battles that are not mutually exclusive.

So should students not be taught history, social studies, physical education, music, or arts in school either?

So should students not have an opportunity to take industrial art (woodshop, metal shop, auto repair, etc) in high school?

It was once available, but I know in CA the subjects were dropped in favor of the warm and fuzzy liberal study subjects.

Thank You

{snipped, because we both like to be wordy...hehe}

Roseann, I appreciate you, and you debate from a place of civility for the most part, if a little condescension is thrown in...that's ok, we all have our styles, I don't take it personally. But I'm afraid there is little to debate here, as a lot of what you're saying is obsolete. Your hopes that society's efforts to become better will be undermined are in vain...if nothing else, time will take care of those who wish, for whatever reason, to resist it. It's a shrinking demographic. Don't take that personally, I'm well aware that someone will soon be saying that about me. :)

Like it or not, humans are pack animals, and society is driven by conformity - shifting conformity, but conformity nonetheless. It's why we have laws and respect government authority. It's why everyone knows what side of the road to drive on. It's why we say please and thank you. And it's why people who do NOT conform earn outsider or pariah status. Or end up in jail. :) The only thing new here is that we are entering a slightly different societal norm, a process that has happened countless times during our tenure on this planet.

We could debate the merits of these changes all day, and I doubt we'd reach consensus. But I can certainly demonstrate societal change over history, and that there has always been an element that has resisted it, and, subsequently, got left behind. The input of parents is important, but most important is preparing children to take up the mantle of responsibility for this world they will inherit, irrespective of parental input. If parents are unwilling to do their part in that regard, either out of hatred or ego or stubbornness or just plain laziness, then I think the child's best interests are served by preparing them for the world regardless, through a public school system.

PC is a way to talk, not a way to think, which is why I reject the whole notion of "Borg collectives" and "smiling fascism". It's nonsense. Most people have situationally dependent vocabularies - I don't talk to my mother the same way I talk to my buddies, which is totally different in both cases from how I talk to my boss or my clients... This is just another shade of that, and one that is important, given the fact that the world isn't exactly getting less diverse. With our growing population, changing migration patterns, and environmental concerns, being able to get along will be critical to our survival. Communication is a huge part of that. Kids should be learning how...which I don't see as being any different from the business communication classes I took in high school, which was too long ago to think about. ;)

Why, exactly, are legal changes necessary to deport illegal immigrants? I agree that legal changes, such as passing an eVerify mandate, would help but even when illegal immigrants are identified, such as those issued deportation orders when they fail to prove (often by failing to even show up) their asylum hearing claims, they are not deported. That is purely a lack of enforcement of existing law problem.

When did I say that? Of course they should, some schools won't be able to but I am sure most could offer at least woodshop. Should it be required, no. A few years after I graduated high school my school got an agriculture/horticulture class and a greenhouse for it too. Every students needs history and social studies though.

So schools should be indoctrinating students with "what to think" rather than teaching them "how to think"? Sounds like what religion did, resulting in the creation of even more disagreeing religious beliefs. Government seems to apply the tactic of "divide and conquer" primarily for its' own benefit. Create a crisis and then promote itself as the only means by which a solution can be achieved.

It appears the entire immigration law is faulty, but neither side is willing to fix it. Deportation at this stage requires more personnel.

This is insane. When I attended high school in LA, there was no requirement for an ethnic studies subject prior to graduation. How is this going to help graduates find jobs? In what way could this have any sort of meaningful impact? Good lord what has California turned into? :doh

Page 1, my prediction is that this thread will draw partisan sides by the second or third post. America bad, conservatives bad vs immigrants bad, liberals bad.

That (bolded above) was by design - we did not wake up one day to find that 12M (to 20M?) illegal immigrants had arrived since 1986. Speaking of 1986, that was when the illegal immigration "issue was addressed" by congress granting a blanket amnesty (to 3M?) illegal immigrants (showing the the world that illegal immigrants get head of line status) followed by promises to secure the border and better enforce interior immigration law. The result was predictable - government power and expense increased but the result was an increase in illegal immigration.

The reasons that congress will not "fix it" is that many want more immigration (legal or not) to accelerate favorable demographic changes while many more want more immigration (legal or not) to help keep US labor costs down. Of course, getting more immigration (legal or not) simply requires blocking any changes in immigration policy or enforcement efforts while any other "fixes" require taking legislative action.

My preferred legislative action would be to change the federal income tax code to include use of the (already created?) eVerify database - no employer would be permitted to deduct the direct labor costs of any employee (W-2 or 1099) not passing an (annual) eVerify database check (conducted by the IRS). That would remove any financial incentive for 'job creators' to use labor which cannot pass an eVerify database check since it would no longer be a tax deductible expense thus substantially increasing their federal income tax liability for the use of any "undocumented" worker.

Politically, for democrats to remain in power in California the outrage/injury industry has to remain robust, so you might as well start them early. These kids will be made aware of which outrage group they belong to.

If all the disparate groups cast away their hyphens, they might start asking questions about why California is sliding into chaos.

And we don’t want that, do we?

California government and schools are run by corporate fascists, essentially Nazis who want to require children required to recite and promise allegiance to their corporate fascist agenda as a condition of graduation.

The above message was sponsored by Nike...

Well Im not denying that racism doesnt exist, it does, but for schools to start indoctrinating children this way, to force them to take these kinds of courses or they dont graduate... is bonkers. :cuckoo:

If schools do not teach children what to think then who is going to do it... the parents?

You just described the Borg villainous hive Mentality and advised that Resistance Is Futile.

You just made up a dumb one line comment to stupidly summarize a valid point into your own made up version to avoid actually posting anything of intelligence

The only way you will ever change someone’s mind is to prove to them that the people they are demonizing are really not that bad. If you have parents saying all day long that, say, Mexicans are lazy, and then they actually get to know Mexicans and realize that they are some of the hardest workers on the planet, then their minds might change. Without the knowledge gained from actually meeting other Mexicans, or learning about them, how would little Johnnie know that his parents were wrong?

That's the problem with many rural white people, they live in bubbles, surround themselves with only fellow white, conservative christians, and they all just keep repeating the same stupid lies about everybody not a white, conservative christian. There is a reason why cities have more liberals, because people actually work, live and play among so many different races, religions, cultures, so they arent' completely ignorant and buy into racism and stereotypes

Do you honestly think that a child will believe the teacher over his/her parents? And this also is a double edged sword, especially when teachers start twisting the narrative and pronounce white males as evil and oppressive. We'll have a whole new generation of people pulling the race card and blaming others whenever they dont succeed in anything.

Yeah, we get it by now, you lov eTRump because he hates thesame folks you hate.

And you just made up this earth shattering sentence to complain about my one liner.

Perhaps, you should have taken your own advice and wowed me with your intellectual prowess with an intellectual argument to validate the point.

Make your point and let the debate begin!

I can expand on my one liner using debate points, plus.

Wrong, as usual. I didnt even vote for Trump, so take your partisan crap elsewhere.
