3 dead in cliff collapse at Southern California beach

The beaches north of San Diego are known for their unstable bluffs.

Three people were killed and at least one other was injured when a coastal bluff collapsed Friday along a popular beach north of San Diego, officials said.

A woman was declared dead at the scene of the afternoon collapse. Two of four people taken to hospitals were initially in critical condition but later died, officials said.

About the only bad thing of near Biblical proportions that CA does NOT have going are plagues of frogs & locusts & the death of first born male children. Oh, and rivers of blood, too.

It is a horrible and tragic occurrence. One must always take care to keep from standing either directly atop or directly below coastal bluffs, because they are always subject to erosion. Remember: wind, tidewater, tectonic forces and gravity are always working inexorably against these cliff faces. It is not a matter of if a coastal rock face collapses, merely when it collapses. Do not allow yourself to become careless and thereafter your life be cut short as a tragic statistic.

I frequently visit various beaches and have lost track how many times I've watched people step past barriers clearly stating potential danger. That, and people that go to see bigger than average surf and go right out on rocks that are clearly wet (from waves) and then damn near get swept off their feet when one eventually engulfs that area again.

Its a shame these people lost their lives but it should be a warning to people that unstable cliffs literally means unstable cliffs.

Damn city of Encinitas won't let those who own homes to build protective walls to prevent such tragedies. Something about damaging the coastal environment.

Makes my head hurt because this horrible tragedy was preventable.

Encinitas is a great beach community, don't get me wrong but their elected officials are morons.

This tragedy was NOT their fault.

These victims were sunbathing on the beach. The unstable cliffs came down on them. The city should have closed grandview beach but they didn't even knowing that these bluffs are unstable. Encinitas beach cliff collapse that killed 3 is part of larger California coast crisis - Los Angeles Times

Sorry, but it's like building a home in a riverbed and then being shocked that during heavy rains that their homes flood. These cliffs didn't just suddenly start falling all of a sudden but in people's quest to have that prime beach front property they built (or bought) regardless of what history shows. There is no shortage of homes in the coastal areas that don't sharing failing cliffs with the ocean. But hey boo hoo my backyard just fell into the sea because common sense was hard.

Those walls are to protect their multimillion dollar homes from erosion.

And were there homes above the cliff in question? Lots of areas don't have homes directly over the cliffs.
