San Francisco eyes charge to drive its famed Lombard Street

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Thousands of tourists could soon have to pay as much as $10 to drive down world-famous Lombard Street in San Francisco.

City and state officials on Monday announced a bill that would give San Francisco the authority to establish a toll and reservation system for the street that winds down a steep hill, in an effort to reduce crowds and traffic congestion.

This scenic artifact of the 1906 earthquake may soon become a reservation-only, pay-as-you-go amusement park instead of an overcrowded street littered with trash & goggle-eyed tourists. At least I can say that I've been down it once. Lots of odd lore about the '06 quake in SF.

Are there any businesses on this road? Imagine that they wouldn't enjoy losing customers.

More Liberal money-grabbing.

This is Lombard Street:

Not your typical street.

There's a picture on the link.

It's all residential IIRC.

As they say, government never found a tax it did not like.

The people who live on this street have been complaining about tourist pollution for years. These are million $$$ homes.

Yes, this is one way liberals drive off poor people. Despite all the fake rantings of rich white liberals, in fact they HATE poor people and immigrants being anywhere near them - especially if they are poor. They live behind walls, have live security guard shacks, armed security, and everything else to keep poor people completely away from them.

That's why they became hysterical when President Trump suggested he might actually do what they falsely claimed they wanted - to be a sanctuary for poor, non-white Latino refugees.

What an idiotic knee-jerk reaction. California=liberal moneygrab. The city is charging tourists a flat rate to help with maintenance of an attraction. Maybe the lack of tourists to Illinois is colouring your opinion of places that people actually want to visit and are willing to pay for the experience. Places that tourist traffic makes maintenance issues happen.
Or hey, being a conservative living somewhere that has absolutely no tourism issues probably makes it look to you and your buds like 'liberal money-grabbing'. That's how it is when you go to California or Florida or Hawaii, liberals grabbing your money, right?

How about we charge $10 for anyone coming into the USA? A $10 toll at all border crossing. A $10 toll at all airports. Nothing to leave.

This would raise $750,000,000.00 per year. Better yet, make it $20. $1.5 billion per year. Anyone so poor they don't have a spare $20 is not someone I want coming to the USA because the odds they will ever leave are next to none.

Here is the issue. It has become known, been in movies and tv, thus become a tourist attraction, which does something for local commerce.

Then people bitch about it and wouldn’t you know... taxation to prevent use ends up being the answer.

Taxation... control... I am fairly certain we’ve had this little debate before about one of the intentions of taxation were politics tends to forgive the idea only when convenient.

Yes, whatever the people in million $$$ homes want, that is what Democrat liberal politicians will do. Ordinary people are just "pollution" to them for sure.

How exactly is charging for what is essentially a tourist attraction money-grabbing?

It is a public road. Those rich white liberals don't want ordinary people and particularly poor street people near them. This will be how the government uses tax dollars to protect rich white liberals from ever even being near poor people. However, they demand that YOU take in poor people in your neighborhood.

Personally, I think ANY type of toll road if a public road should be illegal. Since this is a public road, I would argue it also is unconstitutional as it is unequal treatment under the law based upon wealth.

Have you seen Lombard Street? It is a tourist attraction, it is not a normal street.

Worst road I ever been on, couldn’t wait for it to be over, stop the ride I wanna get off! I wouldn’t go down Lombard again if they payed me $20

Yes I would, but still...

How many do you think bought the home because of it's location?

I think it was built in the 20's. I grew up in SF in the 60's and it certainly was a huge tourist draw then. If folks bought their house after they know it was a huge tourist draw, I say tough titties.

I enjoyed it along with a number of other attractions in SF. It's definitely worth the price of admission to immerse yourself in that town.

One of the highlights is the historic Buena Vista Cafe, which predates the '06 quake. Largest consumer of Irish whiskey in the world. It's Irish Coffee is the best & you'll run into everyone there.

The Buena Vista

The San Francisco Brewing Co on Columbus has gone extinct but it was the 2nd bar in SF. All home brew.

I liked the view from radio tower hill at night and Chipino down by the warf, and pebble beach, all the broke down hippies I could’ve done without, freakin’ everywhere, Nancy’s got some work to do in her town.

Go ahead, see what the tourism market will bear. Milk it for all it's worth. When you find the 'too pissed-off' level, just back it off a notch.
Just a guess, how many of the tourists in San Francisco on any given day are other Americans? Half? 80%? Last I heard, laddybuck, your country has lost it's bloom, tourist-wise. You can still attract those unwashed hordes who will overstay their visas but those Norwegians Trump loves so much come to Canada where the landscape is even more spectacular and there's fewer right-whinge ****-wits.

Canada is best known for it's warm water sandy beaches and year round excellent weather.

Why would anyone overstay a visas in Canada? "A nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" country.
