San Francisco eyes charge to drive its famed Lombard Street

This is Lombard Street:

Not your typical street.

There is NO trash on Lombard Street.
I say go for it, perfectly reasonable when one considers the fact that you can hook a left at Van Ness, take a right on Bay St and go pretty much the same way if you're really trying to get somewhere. Lombard IS a tourist spot and has been for over a century.

I don't blame the city at all, but I would go with FIVE bucks, not ten.

The people who live on this street have been complaining about tourist pollution for years. These are million $$$ homes.

A glorified mother in laws unit is a million in California.

It's San Francisco. Are there ANY homes in that city which don't cost at least a million?

You would probably struggle to find a condo that costs less, let alone an entire house.

Democrats should at least be polite enough to distribute maps that show the economic income level a person must be in to be allowed in various parts of each of their cities. Better yet, they could require residents to have an Economic Worth card and they put up gates across roads with a card code the person would insert so it is known if the person is worth enough to go into that neighborhood or part of the city.

How exactly is charging for what is essentially a tourist attraction money-grabbing?

I used to drive a van for tourists as an SF guide in the late 1970s. We regularly went down Lombard. But we ruined it, sort of. What used to be a fun place to take visitors is jammed. Passed there yesterday, a catastrophe on a Monday. It is a holiday week, tho. I presume the residents are ok with the fee, as I imagine the traffic drives them crazy.

Tourist tip. If you are in a car and nearby, go down Filbert street, a couple blocks over from Lombard, between the same two cross streets. Different kind of thrill. "Holy ****!" was my son's comment.

Also, on the other side of the city is Vermont St., on Potrero Hill, next to the freeway. It is also a crooked stree... without the crowds, but also without the nice gardens Lombard has.

Actually I do not feel too bad for the residents. They paid a premium specifically to live on that street. It has been a tourist destination since I lived there in the 60s and 70s.

I have to wonder how these tolls will be taken. so do you have to pay for 24 hour toll taker, blocking already congested traffic?

How about this, figure out the tolls it takes for the upkeep of the road (or perhaps have the tolls for busy summer season ). And then scrap the tolls.

Like I said, just not feeling sorry for the tenants. Unless they moved in before the 1950s.

It is a silly "street". I don't like it.
