Oregon wants to lower the voting age to 16

We need a test to determine who can vote and who can't. Basic high school stuff. Can't pass... can't vote. That would enable smart kids to vote and stupid adults would be excluded.

Why are the right so afraid of young people with opinions?

They are gonna be running what's left of this country in a few years. I think that they should be able to vote for who they want to clean this mess up.

cool, that would be two more years of young people who can't be bothered to show up and vote.

as for the 18 thing, i don't know. seems kind of arbitrary and cultural, but i suppose the line has to be drawn somewhere. i remember that it was pretty exciting to go in a few days after my birthday and cast my first hopeless vote for Ross Perot. i have cast many hopeless votes since then.

I was so proud of my Ross Perot vote. :)

No, I'd love to be able to that early but letting a bunch of teens vote doesn't seem like a very wise decision.

Playing devil's advocate, one positive thing that could come out of this is to have politics taught in high school, to coincide with when kids come of age to vote. This would create a citizenry much more equipped to make the decisions, and the schooling would come at a time where there would be a practical use. Plus, high schools could have voting right there, ensuring a good turnout.

I think this would actually be not too bad an idea … unless you're worried about who the youth will vote for... ;)

And how it would actually work is that public/private schools would be telling kids how to vote. I say this since when I was in junior high school (many years a go) we had budget problems, and the teachers spent a lot of time trying to convince us to tell our parents to vote yes on the levy. It was an eye opener for me.

Edit: btw that was in Oregon. Oregon is where I grew up.

i'm being to think that the people in Salem has lost their ever lovin minds. We have enough uninformed voters in this State already and now they want to add even more. The only reason I can think they would want to do this is so they can get them voting far left before they come to their senses.

Effort Underway To Lower Voting Age In Oregon To 16 .

Sure, as long as the drinking, smoking, gambling, firearms-buying, military enlistment, and age-of-majority to be tried as an adult are lowered to 16 as well. Oh, and you start paying taxes at 16.

That's what I'm saying. if we lower the voting age to 16 then we should lower the age of responsibility to 16 also. You can not have a protected class of people voting on laws and measures that affect a non-protected class of people.

At least Western OR voters know not to vote for trump.

If you look at the voting results for Oregon, only 7 counties voted Democrat, they were all in the Northwest portion of the State. 11 counties on the west side of the Cascades voted Republican. 29 counties in Oregon voted Republican as a whole.

You make an excellent point. If that third world dung heap which is also known as Portland would cede from the rest of the state, Oregon would be solidly red.

Agreed, I think that Northwest Oregon should secede from the rest of the State, they could form the Peoples Socialist Republic of Portlandia.

They could do the same thing with Northwest Washington and get the same result.
