CA governor accuses Trump of keeping relief money from wildfire victims

California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasts President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency Friday and accuses him of forgetting about the "real emergency" needs of survivors of the disastrous Camp Fire.

Newsom says there are still survivors waiting for federal disaster recovery money and people are suffering.
==============================================
CA is also joining several other states in a lawsuit to challenge the national emergency declaration that the president is using to get billions of dollars to fund his southern border wall.

Trump is ignoring the real post-fire emergency in CA in order to fulfill a hollow campaign promise of building an unneeded wall along the border with Mexico.

The only time that kind of rhetoric is useful is when talking to the Trump hating media and their useful idiots. A court of law will require actual evidence.

Thousands of people whose homes have been destroyed is evidence of an emergency IMO.

Not an accusation, it is documented fact. Trump directly ordered FEMA to not contribute further funding to California wildfire victims.
FEMA funds for that purpose are now officially cut off.
I consider this an act of war against California, given that much of those monies came from California federal taxpayers.
It almost amounts to a criminal taking for political purposes.

Up yours, Newsom.
You can use the $3.5 billion that you owe the American citizens after cancelling the train-to-nowhere project.

Pay your debts first before whining for more money.

Gotta ask...California is known for its fires...don't people in California get home insurance that covers wildfires?

Trumps Vanity Wall[sup]®[/sup] is more important than American citizens struck by a real disaster.

Trump is also going to steal DoD money intended to rehab dilapidated military housing.....

2/15/19
The White House says $3.6 billion in barrier funding will come via Title 10’s section 2808, which allows the secretaries of all US military departments to “undertake military construction projects, not otherwise authorized by law that are necessary to support such use of the armed forces.” The money must come from funds that were already specifically designated for military construction, “including funds appropriated for family housing,” the law reads. In cases where the military was planning to “fix or repair facilities, they might be able to wait for a few months or a year,” a senior White House official said. Housing on US military bases is in terrible shape. Service members and their families are subjected to living conditions that include peeling lead paint, toxic mold, and vermin infestations, according to residents who testified on Capitol Hill this week.
Trump will take billions from the military and police to build border fencing

Gotta ask...California is known for its fires...don't people in California get home insurance that covers wildfires?

The total costs to rebuild would be staggering considering deductibles & the fact that CA property values & replacement costs likely haven't kept up with insurance policies. We recently had a third company firm send us a questionaire about our house & as a result our home insurance rates went up.

Gotta ask...California is known for its fires...don't people in California get home insurance that covers wildfires?

It isn't always available in high risk areas and that is compounded by the fact that some of the recent conflagrations spread to areas where it was never even a risk at all, so it wouldn't be a consideration for many.

Love it when people with big mouths say "up yours" to a state that contributes more federal money than it gets back, especially when those people are from one of the most federally dependent states in the country.

A new study suggests Tennessee isn't paying its way in America as the state's residents and government are taking more from the federal government than they're putting in.

The report is from WalletHub, a financial-advice website that also releases studies on economic and social issues affecting U.S. states and cities.

The new report, released today, figures Tennessee’s state government is the third most-dependent state on federal funding, a figure derived from the proportion of state revenue that comes from the federal government in the form of intergovernmental aid. It also estimates Tennessee residents are the 20th most-dependent on federal aid, which was calculated by dividing federal funding to state’s residents by IRS collections from state residents.

Do I really need to say it?
Maybe we'll just slow walk our federal contributions until Trump leaves the White House, seeing as how he and many of his supporters are so filled with rage and bitterness that they forget that every time their trailer homes get sucked up by a tornado, it's the blue states that bankroll much of their recovery.

With all due respect the CA Governor should quit the talking points and stick to facts. One could ask the Governor what have you done to help your people? What oversight have you provided to assist the public in their insurance claims?

From your own linked article "As of Feb. 13, FEMA had provided over $69 million to survivors of the Camp Fire disaster as part of individual and household relief programs. The agency also has provided about $4.5 million to wildfire victims in Southern California, including the Woolsey Fire last November that destroyed 1,643 structures and killed three people.

$180 million in Grants and Loans Approved for Wildfire Survivors | FEMA.gov

Rebuilding never goes as fast as some victims would like. Local and State governments are critical in helping the victims. What I see is a Governor whining. Time for CA govt to step up.

Sorry, but neither our neighbor nor we got any federal or state or "hand-out" funds when our homes, barns, cars and some of the livestock were destroyed in 1997 by a tornado.
We had insurance on everything.

Up yours, Newsom.

And I don't give a rat's ass if you did or didn't, but while you're sitting there in Tennessee, you're cordially invited to step off anyway.
And like I just said, maybe we'll MAKE you step off by slow walking our contribution to your state's financial largesse, because you enjoy your low tax lifestyle partially at our expense.

Granted, California did figuratively say "**** off" to Trump, but wanted him to come out to the fires, even though Obama never did.

Too bad (grin) ... for you whining people.

And what you missed, either deliberately or not, are the endless threats by Trump that he will order FEMA to withhold funds.

By the way, such threats, if backed by action, are possibly illegal.

Right, because for you, all that matters is "sticking it to the libtards".
That behavior is alarmingly similar to the reward seeking behavior of an addict.

Nice.

Oh and you are so much better than we are. You know all. And they think us young people think they know everything....

Where do you get the idea that California WANTED Trump to visit, or Obama for that matter.
What matters is executive action, not visits and photo ops.
What's with the whataboutism anyway? Is anything in this thread a reference to Obama?
Until you popped up, no...there was no reference to Obama.

The thread is about Trump's endless threats to sabotage California natural disaster recovery for bullcrap reasons, like his now infamous "raking" comments, which have been lampooned around the world, and his refusal to admit that the Federal Government controls well over 60% of the forest land in California.

Must be a ton of these guys in your city who want to "stick it to the libtards" then ... what with all the drug addicts LA has.

On the heels of an exchange like this:

...to which the response was the equivalent of rubbing my face in it:

Too bad (grin) ... for you whining people.

...you have nothing better than "you are so much better than we are"?

Yeah, I'd say that the reality-based community is so much better than you are.
That would be REALITY, not "reality TV", which is what Trump peddles.

It is well past time Trump's reality TV show got canceled, and I don't feel the least bit of obligation to defend actual reality, because to even do so is the textbook indicator that one is arguing with a delusional person in the first place.

Must be a ton of these guys in your city who want to "stick it to the libtards" then ... what with all the drug addicts LA has.

And AGAIN, the beam in your eye...

In 2016, Tennessee was the third highest prescriber of opioids.

Did they let their home owners insurance lapse or something?

Why should we pay for them?

Didn't they have their own insurance?

Yes, many have homeowner's insurance, and business insurance, neither of which can do an adequate job by themselves in the aftermath of a disaster of this scale.

When even the infrastructure is as destroyed as any war zone, cities and states require federal assistance, something you are no doubt aware of.
