There seems to be an agreement that Salesforce should not get tarred by association right now with these three buildings with a bonus rooftop park, which I have figured as the likely problem...that there was an "Error", that it is way heavier than it is supposed to be, but we'll see.

Is there any interest in talking about this $2.7 Billion and going up bus station sucking up three blocks that cant be used because it is breaking?

It made it all of what 6 weeks before they had to close it till further notice?

We could even talk about the sinking tower a block or so yander..

They did not manage to engineer the base right.

Now it is sinking and leaning.

I know the condo building that is leaning and sinking was built on reclaimed land (if I recall correctly) and the foundation did not go down to bedrock but deep in the sandy soil. Do you know if that is the case for this building as well?

They dont know, they are still working to shore it up so that it does not collapse...which is taking way longer than they first indicated for reasons that they refuse to be transparent about but it looks like they once they started inspecting they lost confidence in the building. It does not help that the new mayor has no confidence in the people who built this thing, either the agency or the contractors, and has called for a complete and completely independent evaluation and rethink of the plans and of the construction.

My current best guess is that one of two things happened....either that park is heavier than it was supposed to be or they over stressed some things as they were building this thing....temporarily but enough to crack steal, something that rarely happens.

They say that they have not even begun to figure out what happened, it is 1)stabilize the building 2) get it open and then 3) figure out what went wrong......which they expect to take many months. Then we see.

This is shaping up to be the sort of total disaster that makes even the gung ho lefties of San Francisco question the competence of their government.

Turns out that they dont have the $2.7 Billion bus station they thought they had, they have a $2.7 Billion + whatever bus station.

Which was built wrong, like the leaning tower.

GO SAN FRANCISCO!

Great Points:
So, unlike most bridges, which have one set of vibration forces to sustain from vehicles, the Transit Center has two: buses and people moving – walking around and at times dancing above it. There’s not one document in the TJPA file dump that points to any analysis that was done of the impact of these types of loads on the structure that is Salesforce Transit Center.

In other words, did anyone bother to test how the strucure would behave with buses driving in, stopping, then going out, and thousands and thousands of people milling about on the roof, at the same time? There’s nothing in the TJPA files to suggest that kind of comprehensive testing was done – the kind that calls for a type of mathmatical model of the Salesforce Transit Center as a whole to be put through a computer-simulated stress test.

There are lists of tests of individual parts of the Transit Center that were done, but not one example of the kind of simulation I referred to, and can be done. Does the TJPA have that information? If so, they’ve not presented it or addressed its existence to date. One should not have to ask for it, it should be part of the TJPA file dump the press and public are presented. And for one reason: the impact of harmonic motion on bridge design.

Harmonic Motion Is A Factor In Bridge Stress That Must Be Considered In The Transit Center

History is rich with examples of bridges failing due to harmonic motion caused by a number of factors, beyond cars and people, and including the wind and the earth itself. A giant, multi-billion-dollar facility like Salesforce Transit Center should have been the focus of large-scale structural simulations including the following forces: vehicles, people, wind, rain, and earth movement.

The questions are was that kind of test done, and if so, when and where is it? Right now, there’s no evidence such a process ever took place.
