A man has been charged with assault after fortifying his Oregon home "like a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark".

FBI agents found a circular hot tub linked up to a tripwire, a fortified front door and animal traps laid around the property, local media report.

But they were not able to prevent a wheelchair, fitted with a fishing line and shotgun bullets, from firing on and hitting an agent in the leg.

Gregory Rodvelt, 66, was reportedly trying to prevent his home being sold.

Federal officers found the fortifications when they entered the property in Williams, Josephine County.

Here's another guy who takes his paranoia straight from the bottle.

So...if he doesn't want to sell his home...why is he being forced to? Seems to me this wasn't "paranoia" as much as it was trying to keep property that he owns from being forcefully sold.

Note: I AM NOT condoning his actions.

From article
Gregory Rodvelt had been forced to give up the house after being accused in 2016 of abusing his 90-year-old mother and her guardian at their property.
He had been in jail following an armed stand-off in Arizona last year, but was reportedly allowed out for two weeks in mid-August so he could prepare the house for sale.
The estate agent selling the home alerted the authorities at the end of August after coming across a sign on the property saying it was "protected with improvised devices".

Just another piss ant.

Just another piss ant.

I get that he was in jail for an armed standoff and what he did to his mother and caretaker. That still doesn't entitle the government to force him to sell his property.

The house was the property of Gregory Rodvelt, who had been ordered to turn over the property after his mother and her guardian filed a lawsuit against him for elder abuse, according to the site. It resulted in a $2.1 million judgment, forcing him to surrender the home.

It appears it was no longer legally his house as it was to be used to pay the judgement against him

Fining him X amount still does not entitle the government to force him to sell his property. Forcing him to pay is one thing, forcing him to sell is another.

If I am not mistaken, to clear judgement's against a person any and all assets can be seized and sold (including homes). Had he paid off the judgement with other assets I am sure he would have been able to keep his house (I doubt however he had much in the way of other assets)

It's the same thing. He had only one asset sufficient to cover the debt. Such an anti government attitude, on top of scant regard for parent or the law.. I wonder who he voted for?

with an attached judgment/lien against his property, the owner was not compelled to sell his home
the judgment holder is the party authorized by the court to effect a widely advertised public sale of the attached real property
once the buyer completes the transaction, the court authorizes the transfer of title to the new owner
the sale proceeds, not to exceed the judgment amount, plus interest, plus expense of sale, is then given by the court to the judgment holder

by his actions, the perp was clearly trying to make the property as unattractive as possible to possible buyers, likely hoping that no prospective buyer would be willing to bid on a potentially hazardous property

let's assume you were the $2 million judgment holder
and assume the party against whom you held a judgment possessed $2 million in cash
but rather than paying you the $2 million the court has decreed he owed to you, he instead bought a $2 million home
would you believe the court would be wrong in requiring that acquired real property to be sold to generate funds to pay all or a portion of the debt owed to you?
