Doubtful. Speaking as a Central Californian, I live next to large communities of Sikhs. Practicing Sikhs have been a familiar sight in Visalia, Kingsburg, Selma, Fresno, and Clovis for years. I cannot speak for the communities further north like Manteca, but Sikhs are not some recent transplant. They are not an unfamiliar sight in the slightest. I would go so far as to say that these racists and xenophobes do not particularly care about the difference between Sikhs and Muslims which are considerable, considering Sikhism was born out of resistance against Islamic Imperialism and domination in the Punjab. It is enough that Sikhs are dark-skinned, beard-wearing, turban-sporting foreigners (although many are born here in the United States) to set these racists off.

Trump ran on a Muslim ban & tried his best to get one in place, which of course was not clearly thought out & caused chaos, just like his recent zero tolerance illegal immigration policy at the Mexican border was not clearly thought out & resulted in chaos. Trump sewed the seeds of Muslim & Muslim-like xenophobia & these recent attacks are signs of that.

They DON'T know the difference. They don't even know the difference between Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus or some cartoon of a guy wearing a turban and playing a flute and charming a snake from a basket. As far as the knuckle dragging, gap-toothed hillbillies of Central California are concerned, they're all "camel jockeys" and in that respect the knuckle draggers in Central California aren't any different than knuckle draggers in Central Arkansas.

The elder Sikhs tend to dress in the traditional garb of their homeland. It's pretty easy to tell that they're Sikhs. The younger ones tend to dress like the rest of Americans, and so are a bit more difficult to identify.

Sikhs have been targeted by the ignorant rednecks who think they must be Muslims because they wear turbans. This case seems to not have been rednecks, but just a couple of thugs who saw an easy target.

Anyone who looks different, dresses differently, tends to become a target for the ignorant whether they're redneck thugs, black thugs, or whatever.

Maybe we should require all of the new immigrants to wear uniforms. Come to think of it, perhaps everyone should wear a uniform just to show loyalty to this great free country.
