running from 7/30 to 8/15; love the sounds of the bikes; yes m'am said no but I'm talking to and learning from bikers, not just on bikes either; these guys and gals are great;

Best to get to Needles highway in the AM before it gets nuts; we're coming back towards Mt. Rushmore on the Needles today to see Mt. Rushmore through three one-lane tunnels for photos;

These bikers love to travel through the Black Hills National Forest; so do I; so mellow out here, no one talking politics, cool at night; beautiful blue skies;

Saw Mt. Rushmore lit up last night at 9:30 mountain time after an inspiring 30-minute program on the 4 great faces; if it wasn't for Teddy, there would be no Mt. Rushmore and no National Park, Nat'l Forest and Nat'l monument system as we know it;

Bring binoculars; Hill City will have 10,000 bikes tonight; we're in Keystone at a brand-new motel on a hill where you can see Mt. Rushmore; glad I was out here with the bikers at least once ;

The thing I've picked up on not being a biker is watching them 'back in'. You really have to have your act together to bike in these Black Hills.

Don't miss Needles Eye Tunnel. Stop and Slow through the one lane tunnel. Flagged dude says there'll be 150 or so bikes lined up later today. Seeing all the neat rigs and talking to these folks is amazing.

Internet is spotty up here but XM Sirius is dynamite .

Geez, Linc......this place sounds more overcrowded than Disneyland or Yosemite.
I really dislike crowds.
Hopefully, this isn't a preview of the upcoming eclipse.
I'll flip out if I'm surrounded by teeming masses of humanity.
I can just see the headline......"Left-coast Lunatic Loses Mind During Eclipse" ;)

I'll tell you about this mountain lookout we're at right now a little later. 360 view; listening to WSH/CHC on XM 183; it's good to be an American .

If you see this Rexedgar, we've got great photos on my iPhone but neither of us knows how to transfer them to DP. Please help .

We're done driving for the day; bikes and cars are now driving like it's Friday night. Time to relax. If I ever figure out this iPhone, I'll send photos .

No kidding?
I didn't even know Ozzy was still alive.
Wonder what kind of show he puts on nowadays?

These biker dudes tonight say he talks a lot of the words now, possibly like a rapper.

Possible rain tomorrow. Roads are super dry with lots of petrol products on them; a recipe for disaster with hydroplaning. Today was just great with the weather.

It's back to Iowa tomorrow and I go back to Illinois on Sunday to take care of the two male cats. They're a riot when they fight, showing off their wrestling skills. One ties up left and the other right.

When wife gets home a week Tuesday, I may just head back west for Northern Utah high country before the early snows come .

I have to say, I'm really enjoying your reports on your travels
Kinda like a real time "Travels with Charley"......."Travels with Wifey" maybe.:)
I expect to travel through Utah on my eclipse trek.
Anyway, sounds like you're doing really well and enjoying the summer.
Carry on.

It's not proper for me to prod you to say, "Come to California and visit", so I won't do that. Our best station when Dad was in the Air Force was at Travis. That's where that Willie Mays streak in me came from.

I don't want to leave the west. I never want to leave. Half the fun out here is the great people you meet. I honestly believe that if President Trump visited Teddy Roosevelt's Parks, Forests, and Monuments, he'd be a changed man for the good.

Good advance people could get trump to Mount Rushmore, where there's a nearby Air Force Base. Helicopter him in during the week to not screw up traffic too badly. He needs to see what Teddy saved for us .

Prod away.
Things at Casa de Radioman are a little hectic for the forseeable future. Family responsibilities have me watching out for two of the grandkids during the day. Once school starts, maybe we'll work something out. Your Utah trip could be a good opportunity.

I haven't road tripped as much as you, but I really like stopping at local diners. Not Dennys ---although Dennys is okay, G-kids love it----but the unique, little retros just off the interstates. Feels like I'm stepping back in time.

I'm not so sure about the Trump thing. I think the guy is so wrapped up in his gigantic ego that no outside stimuli can penetrate his thick skull.
Too bad. When he was elected, I was more optimistic about this guy's potential administration than you were. Now I think he's hopeless.

I went to Sturgis in 1990 (for the 50th) on my 1988 Sportster 1200 but it was way too crowded - you had to wait in line just to wait in line. Went again in 1992 on my 1992 Dyna Glide and had a much better time - still plenty of bikes but not nearly so crowded. I can't imagine going to Sturgis except on a motorcycle but I'm glad that you are enjoying it.

Went to Sturgis in 1998. We stayed at Black Hills State College which open their dorms for the bikers. Which proved nice and dry because it is always going to rain during that week.

For me it is like the Grand Canyon. You only need to visit it once.

A few years back about this time when bikers are headed out for Sturgie my wife and I had breakfast out at local restaurant. Sitting there I saw about 4 bikers come in and one of them had a tee shirt on that said "Nice Trailer *****" on the back. It took for a minute then I started laughing and had to go over and shake his hand.

Wasn't that the first year for the 1200 Evo in a Sporty?

A buddy of mine had one, and it was pretty quick for a Harley. The fastest Harley of the year, if I remember right?

Yes, it was the first year for that engine on the sportster. I tried many modifications to make it work as a touring vehicle, the only one's I had done before that long trip (I lived in MD then) were to change to a 3.5 gallon fuel tank and a flat panned (more padded) seat. That motorcycle was fast (for its weight) but it shook (vibrated?) like crazy. Changing to belt drive helped that quite a bit but there is only so much you can do for a rigid mount HD twin.
