A federal judge in New York on Tuesday ordered Iran to pay billions of dollars to parents, spouses, siblings and children of more than 1,000 9/11 victims, court documents obtained by ABC News show. The judge set damage awards according to the following scale: $12.5 million per spouse, $8.5 million per parent, $8.5 million per child and $4.25 million per sibling.

The judgment is part of the larger case the 9/11 families are pursuing against Saudi Arabia. There’s a conference in that case later this month.

Iran ordered to pay billions to relatives of 9/11 victims - ABC News

Although this is a largely symbolic victory for the families of 9/11 victims as Iran isn't expected to cooperate with the ruling, this gives new hope that Saudi Arabia may be held accountable, or at least ruled liable for their role in the 9/11 attacks.

Information about Saudi Arabia's role in the attacks was largely downplayed by the 9/11 Commission, and information was withheld from the public.

Because a person born in their country does something, they are responsible? Unless they can prove it was sponsored by the government of that country, this is stupid.

It's not stupid. The problem with Saudi Arabia's involvement, is that it was never adequately
presented to the American public. This is because of our own government's ties to the Saudis, and our reliance on their oil.

The FBI found that the Saudi Embassy in the US helped plan portions of 9/11 training. Money was also provided to the very terrorists who flew those planes into the towers and Pentagon.

We need our government to declassify documents pertaining to the Saudis involvement NOW. Not in 50 years, not in 100 years. It's time to let the full story be known, and let the chips fall where they may.

Am I the only one who finds this problematic?

The lawsuit, which was first filed in 2004 and allowed to go forward in 2016 after Congress passed Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act to open sovereign states accused of terrorism to liability, alleged Iran provided assistance, including training, to the 9/11 hijackers even though the 9/11 Commission found no direct evidence of Iranian support.

Am I the only one who finds this problematic?

No. Allowing a lawsuit to go forward AFTER a 'law' was enacted is wrong. If it was passed with the intention of letting a suit go forward, is equally troubling.

To me, it's the same as holding someone responsible for a crime that wasn't a crime when it occurred.

We disagree. I'm not saying what you're saying is not true. They need to prove it first.

Most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis, did most of their training in Saudi Arabia and were officially sponsored by members of the Saudi royal family. The only logical conclusion is to invade Afghanistan then sue our enemy Iran while ignoring what our best buds Saudi Arabia did!

American foreign policy is so disgusting and corrupt sometimes.

It already has been proven and is a fact. Just because you're ignorant if the facts doesn't mean there aren't any.

I've wondered about this more than a few times. It makes a complete joke out of American foreign policy. Most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi. So... we go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan?

OBL was the mastermind, yet the US originally armed him (and the rest of Al Qaeda) in the 80's during the Iran-Iraq war to fight the Russians. We never tire of sticking our nose where it doesn't belong, and it backfires every time. Our leadership appears incapable of taking lessons from history, and we're doomed to repeat it.

Syria is the most recent example that comes to mind.

It's an Arabian 'Groundhog Day.'

I found it interesting that Saudi Arabia was missing from the infamous travel ban, too... quelle surprise!

I was referring more to the fact that this ruling is in spite of the fact that Iran isn't linked to the 9/11 attacks.

I'm confused. What has been proved regarding participation by Iran, and where was it proved? Maybe I misunderstand your post.

Even the OCT does not include any Iranians.

This court ruling is a huge example of how corrupt and irrational the US judiciary is. Iran? Why not charge Spain too?

From the article which you linked to:

Bolded section done by me.

Seems a rather flimsy case without any evidence. More likely a political move to further discredit and demonise Iran in the eyes of the American public, thus lowering the barriers of the US electorate to war or military action by the US and its allies against Iran.

America might be very well being played by war-hawks and their PR allies in the opening moves of the next US war of adventure.

Cheers.

I considered that while first reading the article. Would an American judge be so compromised as to structure his ruling around current events regarding Iran?

As long as Iran can be tied to WMD, or Assad's sloppy chemical attacks, the case for war will be victorious. Watch for the NYT, WaPo, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and others to support aggression, if they aren't currently already.

Saudi Arabian royal family has a long history of funding some of the most radical Islamic sects. It's only recently that groups like ISIS have come about and criticism of the Saudi royal family has become part of their views have the Saudi's become more anti-extremist. Radical Islamists were a tool of the Royal family for decades.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria sees itself as purer than the Saudi regime, but its fundamentalist Sunni doctrine has its roots in Wahhabism. Bob Graham, a former Democratic senator from Florida who has called for declassification of the portion of the 9/11 Commission report dealing with Saudi Arabian links to the hijackers, says ISIS "is a product of Saudi ideals, Saudi money, and Saudi organizational support." In effect, Graham says, ISIS represents a form of Wahhabi ideology that the Saudis can't control — a cancer that now threatens the kingdom. "Who serves as fuel for ISIS? Our own youth," said Saudi dissident writer Turki Al-Hamad this year. "In order to stop ISIS, you must first dry up this ideology at the source."

How Saudi Arabia exports radical Islam

There is no ****ing connection to Iran. As usual it's the asshole Saudis whose dicks we suck for oil.

The entire judgment was done exclusively to give Trump a chubby, and that's all.

But, oil...

During the Afghanistan/USSR war the USA supported the Mujahedin. The Mujahedin were composed of many fractions of, often rival, Afghanistan natives and foreign Muslim fighters from around the world.

Osama Bin Laden was only a small contingent of the overall Afghanistan resistance.

As to Saudi Arabia getting preferential treatment because they have so much oil -----DUH....
Oil is the oxygen of the modern world.

President Jimmy Carter created the "Carter Doctrine" which is "The free flow of oil from the Persian Gulf is a VITAL national interest of the USA"

The word "vital" in diplomat speak means: WE WILL GO TO WAR OVER THIS.
